Janney Scrabble Club is BACK!
The club is open to 4th and 5th graders and will meet in the Janney library on Thursday afternoons from 3:15 until approximately 4:30. The first session will be held on Thursday, September 2. Scrabble is a great tool for learning about spelling, math, language, strategic thinking, spatial relations and competition. In the club, students will learn the basics of School Scrabble and have the opportunity to play in tournaments at Janney and elsewhere in the region during the school year. Janney 5th Graders Launch a New Student Newspaper
Read the first edition of the new Jaguar Journal - the only student newspaper at the elementary school level in the District of Columbia. The paper is written by Janney 5th Grade Students under the direction of Aaron Epstein. To read the paper, click here.
The PTA Small Grants Program
The PTA has launched its new small grants program to fund projects that benefit Janney students and the community, fit within the mission of the school, and are otherwise unfunded by the PTA or DCPS. Grants are capped at $750. Parents, students or teachers may submit proposals, however all proposals must have a teacher sponsor. Small Grant Applications are available here. The deadline for the first round of funding is October 30th. Questions may be addressed to Pippa Trench.
Janney Addition & Modernization and Related Project News
The Janney Addition and Modernization Project has begun. The official groundbreaking took place in January (view video here) and work will begin in earnest in April 2010.

Janney Parents List Serve
In addition to the newsletter list above which is used by the PTA and the School to communicate important information to parents, a Janney parents can communicate with eachother on a Yahoo Discussion Group. This list is for postings about issues of interest to Janney families. Such issues would include, for example: DCPS news, Janney news, after school opportunities, Janney events and fundraisers, and items of interest that are being given away such as karate uniforms or cleats. Survey on Language Enrichment After School Classes
The JED Program Director would like to know your thoughts regarding language enrichment classes after school. Please take a moment to fill out a survey on this topic. Responses will be collected through Sept. 3rd.
Nut Policy Discussion Meeting
On Tuesday, August 31st at 6:00pm parents and teachers were invited to a meeting to share viewpoints, information and ideas towards the creation of a new nut policy for the school. A new policy is necessitated by the fact that this year Janney has multiple students with severe nut allergies at every grade level from PK - 5. If you were unable to attend, but want to share your perspective, please email the Principal.

Janney Art
Janney Art Teachers have created their own blogs to capture and present art created throughout the year to Janney families. To view them click: Ms. Strulson's Art Blog or Ms. Morrison's Art Blog.
Child Development Screenings
Early Stage Child Development Screenings will begin at Janney as needed after the first of the year. These screenings will be administered by Early Stages - the program within DCPS' Office of Special Education focused on children 3 to 5 years old. The program seeks to provide early identification of any developmental delays that a child may have and appropriate evaluations and services to address those delays. Early Stages begins this identification process by administering the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to your child - a highly rated screening tool that offers a complete overview of your child's development, including the areas of gross and fine motor, communication, problem solving, and social/emotional development. School Tours for Prospective Parents
Tuesday tours of Janney are available for prospective families. The tour will include a brief information session and a tour with the assistant principal. Please do your best to attend one of these weekly tours (through the second week of April) so that we can minimize disruptions to our classrooms. Tours will take place promptly at 9am with places reserved by calling the main office at 202-282-0110. The DC placement lottery for 2010-2011 has closed. Results are available on the DCPS website here.
