Just start your search here and you will be taken to the full Amazon webpage. When you place your order, Janney will earn a percentage of the total amount spent. Thank you for your support!

The PTA Small Grants Program

The PTA has launched its new small grants program to fund projects that benefit Janney students and the community, fit within the mission of the school, and are otherwise unfunded by the PTA or DCPS. Grants are capped at $750. Parents, students or teachers may submit proposals, however all proposals must have a teacher sponsor. Small Grant Applications are available here. The deadline for the first round of funding is October 30th. Questions may be addressed to Pippa Trench.

Open Houses and School Tours for Prospective Parents

Janney will be hosting its annual Spring Open House on Friday, March 12th at 9:15 a.m. Prospective parents will have a chance to tour the school, talk to students and parents, and meet our principal and vice principal. The event, including introductions, tours, and a Q&A session, typically lasts about 2 hours.

During the months of January and February parents are invited to take a tour of Janney on Tuesday mornings from 9am – 10am. The tour will include a brief information session and a tour with the assistant principal and student representatives, and will conclude with a help session around applying for the Pre-K lottery and/or the out-of-bounds lottery. Additional tours will be scheduled as needed. For more information about Pre-K and out-of-boundary enrollment, click here.

Janney Addition & Modernization and Related Project News

A ceremonial ground breaking for the Janney addition project happened at Janney on January 6, 2010. See the video here.

The most recent design drafts presented to the SIT committee by the DC Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) and the project architects, Deveroux and Purnell are available for viewing by clicking here. Comments on the plans can be submitted to the SIT at this address JanneyDesignComments@yahoo.com. The builder in charge of the project will be Winmar-Dustin.

The most recent schedule for construction presented at the OPEFM meeting on December 15, 2009, includes a Commission of Fine Arts Review Hearing on January 21, 2010, a tentative date for the start of constuction on April 16, 2010 and a projected completion date for construction of the new addition on December 15, 2010. This phase will include limited modernization of the existing facility. Additional modernization of the existing Janney facility will take place during the summer of 2011.

To read the OPEFM Community Project brief distributed on December 15th, click here. Janney students are expected to remain in the building, in existing demountables, and on the grounds during construction with the undestanding that a significant proportion of the outdoor playspace will be unavailable during the construction phase. Alternative outdoor options are being explored by the Principal.

On November 19th, the Janney school was listed as a historic landmark by the Historic Preservation Review Board. As a landmark, Janney will be subject to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) as administered by the State Historic Preservation Office (District of Columbia office) and the DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) and designs will conform to these requirements.

Construction on the new Tenley-Friendship Library has begun. The first phase of this construction includes rebuilding the retaining wall between the library and Janney school grounds. A fence has been built 30 feet from the eastern and southern edges of the field to stage machinery for the construction. The sidewalk along Albemarle Street from 30 feet west of the library site down to Wisconsin Avenue will be closed but the curb lane will be transformed into a walkway to ensure pedestrian passage.

For more information on these issues see the SIT/Janney Addition webpage.

Janney's Participation in the National MLK Day of Service

In honor of the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. day of service, Janney will collect items for 3 different organizations beginning Friday, January 8th and running through Friday, January 22nd. Students and family members can drop off donations in the labeled boxes that will be in the first floor hallway, to the right of Ms. Soribe's security desk. The three organizations are Thrive DC, The Washington Animal Rescue League and the Washington Humane Society and the Rainforest Action Network.

Thrive DC is in need of gently-used or new adult hats, gloves, scarves, and coats. The Washington Animal Rescue League and the Washington Humane Society need towels and blankets (no sheets please!), kongs, peanut butter, fake mice, and jingle balls. A digital camera would be greatly appreciated by the Humane Society to help them document cases of animal mistreatment and cruelty. (Please put in Shana Zallman's box in the office directly). Finally, Janney Jaguars can help live jaguars in South American forests by dropping coins and dollar bills into the labeled jug. The money collected will be sent to the Rainforest Action Network to help them in their efforts to curb deforestation and climate change. Thank you for your participation!

Child Development Screenings

Early Stage Child Development Screenings will begin at Janney as needed after the first of the year. These screenings will be administered by Early Stages - the program within DCPS' Office of Special Education focused on children 3 to 5 years old. The program seeks to provide early identification of any developmental delays that a child may have and appropriate evaluations and services to address those delays. Early Stages begins this identification process by administering the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to your child - a highly rated screening tool that offers a complete overview of your child's development, including the areas of gross and fine motor, communication, problem solving, and social/emotional development. For more information click here.
