OverviewJanney Elementary School, a D.C. public school, is located near Tenley Circle in northwest Washington, D.C. and serves the community of American University Park and part of Friendship Heights. When possible, the school tries to accept as many out-of-boundary children as possible. The school building was completed in 1925 and opened its doors in September of that year to 585 students in grades three through eight. Children in kindergarten through second grade attended the nearby Tenley School. In 1932, when the second phase of Janney's construction was completed and Alice Deal Junior High School opened, kindergarten through sixth grade were taught at Janney. Today, Janney School has 20 classes for grades pre-kindergarten through fifth and enrolls approximately 500 students with over 50 faculty and staff. Janney School FactsCommunity: The Janney community is strong, loving and committed, with a very high degree of parental involvement. Our student population is diverse and international - over 30 languages are represented. Janney is a leader in inclusionary Special Education practices (with 8% special education students). Awards: Janney is a Blue Ribbon School, having been one of the first DCPS elementary schools to receive the honor in 2004, and is seen as a model in Washington, DC in terms of instructional practices. In 2008, our Mathcounts team was the highest placing elementary team in the city-wide competition against 7th and 8th graders. Academics: Janney’s overall performance in the 2009 DC Comprehensive Assessment System Test (CAS) places it among top schools in the city. In 2008-2009 Janney student's reading scores continued to rise, going from 83.4% (proficient or higher) in 2007 to 87.8 % in 2008 to 90.84% in 2009. Math scores went from 80.6% in 2007 to 88.98% in 2008 to 85.5% in 2009. In 2009, Janney was the second highest school in the city in reading scores (behind Mann) and third in math (behind Mann and Lafayette and tied with Key). For more information about the DC CAS, click here. Janney is one of only three DCPS schools fully implementing a Balanced Literacy program using both Readers’ and Writer’s Workshop. Janney utilizes the Everyday Math curriculum. |
