A Greeting from Scott Cartland, Principal

Welcome to Bernard T. Janney Elementary School!   Janney has been an integral part of the Tenleytown area for over 79 years.   We are a diverse public school that supports high academic achievement through a rich and varied curriculum.   We encourage and are blessed with tremendous parental support.   Our teachers and support staff are incredibly dedicated and experienced and work very hard to ensure that every child is being challenged and demonstrating positive growth both academically and socially.

Our school serves approximately 475 students in grades Pk - 6 th.   Each child spends the majority of time with a homeroom teacher but we are fortunate to offer Art, Library, Music, and Physical Education as resource classes.   A full-time math specialist and full-time reading specialist support the teaching staff through professional development, peer coaching, and modeling effective teaching strategies.

In addition to the regular school curriculum, Janney is also fortunate to have a number of extra-curricular activities including: Band, Notebusters (choir), Basketball Teams for Boys and Girls, Safety Patrols, Student Council, Chess Club, Cybrary Student Volunteers, Peer Mediators, School Musical, 6 th Grade Choir, Destination Imagination, and Recorder Club.   The school also participates in a number of school-wide community service projects.   Our goal is to provide an enriching environment for the whole child to complement our rigorous academic expectations.

Janney offers services for learners with varying exceptionalities.   We have four special education teachers and offer related services in the areas of speech, social/emotional counseling, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.   All services are provided in the least restrictive environment.   We offer support for English Language Learners through our ESL program.   Finally, every member of our staff is experienced and actively works to differentiate the instructional program to ensure that all students are making as much academic and social growth as is possible.

Our parents support the school by volunteering in the classrooms and through participation in the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA).   Each classroom has designated room parents who coordinate activities for that classroom such as field trips and special days.   Parents are actively included on the School Improvement Team (SIT), which together with designated school staff, design the school plan and build the school budget.   You can learn more about the PTA and SIT through other pages on this site.

Computers and technology are widely available in the building.   Every classroom has access to computers that are networked with access to the internet.   There is also a bank of computers in the library as well as a mobile laptop lab that can be used in classrooms.

The Janney community is very proud of our school.   Thank you for taking the time to visit our website.   If there is anything that I can do to be of service, please don't hesitate to call me at (202)   282-0110 or via email at marshall.cartland@k12.dc.us .
