Enrichment Programs at Janney

Here at Janney we recognize and value the importance of enrichment opportunities for our students at all grade levels. Enrichment opportunities stimulate the mind and enhance traditional educational learning, giving children a taste of achievement they can carry with them into the world.

School Day Programs

School Clubs

Janney's lunch-time club program is open to students in grades K-5. This program is intended to offer enrichment opportunities to Janney students that both enhance and expand what is taught in the classroom and what is offered after school. Clubs meet once a week from 12-1 for approximately a 10-12 week period. Students may join up to 2 clubs per week. 5th graders must participate in at least one club - a requirement at Deal Middle School as well.

Clubs are run on a VOLUNTEER basis by teachers and parents and community members. If you would like to run a club, please contact Pippa Trench. Thank you to all of our club leader volunteers!

Extra-Curricular Activities

In addition to activites offered as lunch-time club, other groups, teams and activites are offered at Janney. Click HERE for more details.

Arts & Arts Integration

All Janney students have one period of art and music each week. Lunch-time clubs add to these opportunities. In addition, the school and PTA strive to offer arts integration experiences at each grade level at least every other year. Arts integration specialists come into the classroom and work with the students and teachers to incorporate an arts experience into the more traditional curriculum.

Assemblies

Janney hosts visiting artists and child-centered presentations once a month. In 2010-11, Janney hosted Wendy the Singing Scientist and Flumpa the Tree Frog who performed interactive shows on Rainforests from grades Pre-K through 2nd grade and Outer Space for grades 3-5; the Native Pride Dancers, a Native American Dance Troupe based in Minnesota.  Dancers represent the Meskwaki, Lakota, Navajo and  Dakota-Ojibwe Tribes; Chinese Acrobats; Bills Buddies from the Folgers Shakespeare Theatre; and, the Smithsonian Discovery Theater.

Recess

At Janney we value a child's time to play and explore their world in a less structured way. Every grade level has two daily recess periods: 1/2 hour during the lunch period and an additional 20 minute period in the morning or afternoon, depending on the grade level. In addition, teachers may decide to take their class outside for instruction or guided activities that enhance their classroom curriculum.

Recess at Janney takes two forms. Responsive recess at lunchtime and free play during the second daily recess, which is focused on free play and exploration of playground equipment.

During responsive recess, students are exposed to different games, activites and imaginative stations where play is often guided by recess leaders - 5th grade students or teachers - who may set the parameters of a game or pose questions or challenges to participants to facilitate play. Responsive recess is designed to help children increase their level of leadership of agreements, activities, reflections, mediations and problem solving. The number of highly physical activities and creative spaces, and the ability of children to freely circulate between stations, keeps this recess period exciting, new and child centered.

After Care and Enrichment Review Process

The Janney Community conducted an evaluation survey of the after school care options and desires at the school. Just as teachers and staff are continually evaluated and encouraged to learn and to grow their expertise, our after care provider must continue to develop to meet the ever-changing needs of our growing community.

Thank you to the 224 families that responded to the survey and to those who participated in the focus groups.

For a summary of the results of the survey, click HERE. The results of the survey guided the design of a request for proposals (RFP) that has been issued to JED - Janney's present after-care provider - for a first response. To read the RFP, click HERE. JED's proposal has been accepted for the 2011-12 school year.

Evaluations are led by the After Care Working Group. The After Care Working Group is comprised of Janney parents, both JED participants and non-participants, members of the PTA Board of Directors, a representative of the LSAT and the school Principal. Individual members are: Jenny Craig, JP Ellison, Stefan Fatsis, Susan Gerson, Karen Harris, Kil Huh, Lynn Kuechenberg, Norah Lycknell, Amanda Maisels, Carola McGiffert, Jonathan McHugh, and Tracy Scarrow. Comments can be shared with the entire group by emailing janneyacsurvey@gmail.com.
