Janney Extended Day (JED)

Janney Extended Day is has served the JED community with an enriching after-school experience for more than two decades. The Janney in the morning program is a limited service morning program.

Janney Extended Day Hours are 3:15 – 6:00 p.m. (Optional 6-6:30 late stay period)

Janney in the Morning Hours are 7:45 – 8:45 a.m.

After School Offerings

JED and outside vendors offer after school classes at Janney. For a listing of after school classes offered by JED, see below.

In addition to these in-school offerings, many, many after school classes are offered in the area. Just a few fall offerings in sports (such as tennis, soccer, gymnastics, rock climbing, martial arts, yoga, basketball, street hockey and cheer leading) arts (such as theater, dance, studio art and music), cooking and language are listed below. After School Classes Offered at Janney

Art Club

The Janney Art Club is a free community activity open to 25 students a session in grades 1-5 every Wednesday after school from 3:15-4:30 pm. Winter Art Club is now FULL. Please email Mrs. Strulson if you have questions.

Math

Math Counts - an exciting math club run by Dr. Karen Langford, Janney's math specialist, meets weekly at 8:05 am on Mondays for grades 2&3, and 3:15 pm on Wednesdays for grades 4&5. The group meets in Ms. McCrackin's Room on the 2nd floor. For more information, email Dr. Langford.

Music and Theater

The 4th-5th grade musical this year is the Jungle Book. Performances will be held at the Hardy Middle on February 19th and 20th. For more information contact Ginney Curtain at 686-7058.

A Musical Theater Performance Class (grades 1-3) will be held afterschool on Thursdays in the Spring of 2010 in the Janney music room. Performances are planned for May 14th. Students will be introduced to all aspects of musical theater: acting, singing, movement, improvisation and performance skills. All class members will take part in the final performance of a 30 minute musical called Coyote Steals Summer written specifically for this age group. During the semester, additional rehearsals will be scheduled as needed. A dress rehearsals will take place May 8th in the afternoon. Attendance is very important. Note Busters Chorus
Notebusters (1-5 grade) takes place after school on Tuesdays beginning March 16th. Cost $100. For this show, Mr. Alex, the Director, is combining the greatest hits from the musical, The Jersey Boys, with the best songs from the musical,  Hairspray, to create a fantastic fun show for everyone to enjoy! A performance is tentatively scheduled for May 23rd. Class size is limited. Contact Shellie Wood for more information. Registration form is available here.

Janney Band
The Janney Band is directed by Sterling Scroggins and is open to all 4th-5th grade students (3rd if the student is taking lessons privately.) All instruments are welcome. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 AM. in the gym. The first rehearsal will be on Tuesday, August 25 at 8 AM. The Band performs several times during the school year including the winter and spring concerts, and the Janney musical.

Beginning and continuing group instruction on the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and percussion are also available. Lesson times TBD. Children who play other instruments are also welcome in the Band, provided that they take private lessons on their instruments. The fee for Band is $400 for the year which may be paid in installments. (In special cases, the fee may be waived by the principal.) Click here to download a registration form. Sports

Soccer
Parents coordinate soccer classes and practices on site at Janney. On Thursdays in the fall Darryl Gee Soccer Academy will teach one class on the Janney field for pre-K and K students and one class for 1st grade students. Please ask parents in your grades for more information.

DC Stoddert Soccer League
Many Janney kids participate in soccer teams through the Stoddert program. There are multiple Janney soccer teams per grade. Teams usually meet once a week for practice and games take place on Saturdays at various locations. Teams are grouped by age and grade. Co-ed teams are for ages 4 1/2 (Spring) and 5 1/2 (Fall) through 19 years old, players are divided into divisions by birth date. All children registered by the deadline are placed onto teams with no tryouts necessary, and all team members are given substantial playing time. There are also all girl teams for ages 7 to 18.

Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is offered for girls in grades 3-5. This nationwide program teaches girls about running, but also about health, fitness, body image, self esteem and community service. It is a 12-week character building program of experiential learning through running. The program culminates in a non-competitive 5K race event which gives the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. The program will take place in spring 2010 and will meet on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 PM and Tuesdays from 7:30-8:25 AM. The program will end with a final 5K run at the National Arboretum. Dance

Joy of Motion Dance Studio
JOM's Friendship Heights studio is located at 5207 Wisconsin Ave (over Paul’s Liquor Store). Fall classes run from September 8-December 21. Youth classes (for ages 1-18) are offered for all ages in ballet, jazz, modern, tap and hip hop and other dance styles. A youth dance ensemble is also available.

Culkin School of Traditional Irish Dance
Irish dancing classes are offered for ages 4 and up in DC and Bethesda locations.

DC Dance Collective
Located at 4809 Wisconsin, this studio offers classes to youth in Tap, Hip Hop, Flamenco, Jazz, Break Dancing and other dance styles. The fall session runs from September 8-December 21.

Yoga

Budding Yogis at Circle Yoga
Located at 3838 Northampton Street NW, near Chevy Chase Circle, Budding Yogis offers yoga classes for children ages 2-teenagers.

Theater

Adventure Theater
Located at Glen Echo, this theater program offers classes in drama, technical theater, clowning, musical theater and my personal favorite... Light Saber Adventures. Classes start September 8.

Imagination Stage
Besides the classes offered at Janney (see listing above), classes are offered at Imagination Stage in Bethesda in musical theater, singing, and filmmaking. Drama classes are offered for all ages and include improvisation, character development, acting, drama and music. Thematic drama classes, Pirates & Mermaids and Knights & Princesses are offered for children in K-1st grade. Dance classes for all ages are offered in ballet, jazz and hip hop. Thematic dance classes, Angelina Ballerina and Nutcracker Ballet are offered for children in K-1st grade.

Music

Middle C Music
The store located at 4530 Wisconsin Ave NW offers private lessons in acoustic & electric guitar, piano, cello, violin, saxophone, bass, harmonica, percussion, voice, clarinet, flute, & recorder. A Rock Band Class is also available. Middle C also rents instruments.

The Levine School
Located at 2801 Upton Street, NW, the Levine School offers group and individual classes for all ages in many instruments and music theory. See here for fall catalogue.

DC Youth Orchestra
The DCYOP offers a comprehensive music education program that serves young people in the greater DC metropolitan area. Instruction is available for all orchestra and wind ensemble (band) instruments; beginning, intermediate, and advanced students, ranging in age from 4 1/2 to 19. Students participate in classes for their individual instrument or section, and also participate in one of 6 orchestras, 3 wind ensembles, 2 string orchestras, 1 Jazz ensemble and/or multiple class ensembles.

International School of Music
The ISM offers private lessons in piano, strings, woodwinds, percussion and voice. The school is located at 5110 Ridgefield Rd., suite 104, Bethesda MD.

Offers soccer classes at various locations for ages 2-9.

Located at 725 Rockville Pike, Rockville MD, Earth Treks offers indoor rock climbing experiences for ages 6 and up.

Gymnastics

Marva Tots and Teens
Located at 5636 Randolph Road in Rockville MD, the school offers classes to all ages every day at all levels from age 3 and up. Boys and girls are in separate classes from age 6. A special co-ed trampoline and tumbling class is offered for ages 8 and up. Fall classes run from September 2-November 24.

Silver Stars Gymnastics
Located at 2701 Pittman Drive, Silver Spring, MD, the school offers classes to all ages every day at all levels from age 18 months and up. Classes are grouped by age and there are single sex options (depending on the age). There is a co-ed trampoline and tumbling classes for ages 6-9. Fall classes run from September 4-October 29 (session 1) and October 30-January 31 (session 2).

Tennis

Lafayette Tennis Program
This program operates at Lafayette Park at 33rd and Quesada, NW. They offer small classes for children ages 4 1/2 to 13 Monday-Friday.

Martial Arts

Yong Studios - Tae Kwan Do
Located at 4445 Wisconsin Ave (above Neisha Thai), the studio offers for children classes at all levels.

Washington DC Shotokan Karate Club

The Club offers classes for ages 7 and up at the Jelleff Boys and Girls Club at 3265 S Street, N.W. The first month of training is free.

Art Classes

Artworks
Located at 7847 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda, Artworks offers classes for ages 3 ½ through adults. Classes are offered in drawing techniques. Students start off using pastels and move up to water colors and oil paints.

Glen Echo
Glen Echo offers dozens of art classes in all mediums – drawing, painting, crafts, clay, animation, etc. Classes run from 1 day workshops to 8 week courses.

Language

Communikids
Located at the Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church, 3920 Alton Place NW, the school offers group language classes in Spanish, French, Italian and Mandarin for ages 2-8.

Jabberu
Located at 4926 Del Ray Avenue, Bethesda, MD, the school offers group lessons in Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic and Italian for ages 1-10.

Cooking

Just Cakes
This bakery located at 4849 Rugby Avenue, Bethesda MD, offers a variety of courses designed for maximum fun and learning for ages 7 and up. Classes cover all kinds of cooking. Fall class schedule will be available in mid-September. Check their website for details.
