A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Happy New Year and welcome back! As usual there is a lot going on at Janney, so get out your calendar and enter these can't-miss events!

Wendie Lubic from the Parent Encouragement Program (PEP) is coming to the Janney PTA meeting to give an interactive talk, "Raising 'I Can' Kids" on Tuesday, January 15th at 7:15 pm. As parents we often forget that parenting is a learned skill. Let's spend some time honing and strengthening the tools we use with our children. Ms. Lubic will talk about why a child's "I Can Quotient" is a more important indicator of being able to thrive in life than the traditional IQ. She will help us learn strategies to increase our children's sense of feeling connected, capable, competent, and courageous. Child care will be provided.

Call now and book your babysitter for February 2nd, the night of the Janney Carnival! (Formerly known as the Janney Auction!) If you have never been, this is a FUN and very special event. It raises thousands of dollars for the PTA, 100 percent of which goes to support our award-winning school. It is a great opportunity to meet fellow parents, teachers, and staff in a totally relaxed setting. It is also a large and complicated event to pull off, and you can volunteer to help. Please plan to come!

JED Seeking Volunteer Accountant

The Janney Extended Day (JED) program is seeking a volunteer CPA to help prepare their annual nonprofit 990 tax forms. Anyone interested in a few hours of helping the afterschool program prepare these forms should contact Glenn Sitney at gsitney@yahoo.com or Michael Cervino at michael.cervino@beaconfire.com. We truly appreciate any help an experienced CPA can give!

Happy New Year and best wishes for a productive, healthy 2008!

Healthy Start to 2008
It's important that students have breakfast at home or at Janney before starting their academic day. Breakfast at Janney is served from 8:10-8:30 a.m. for any students who need breakfast. If students arrive later than 8:30 a.m., they can get breakfast, but they may be late for the beginning of their school day.

A Good Study Place
Having a good study space is important for good studying. Research shows that students study best in a quiet environment free of interruptions and distractions. A study place should be consistent, some place with a desk or table and a comfortable chair, and should have all study materials easily accessible (books, pencils, pens, rulers, and so forth). The study space should have enough light and be a comfortable temperature, not too hot so you become sleepy or too cold where your thinking may slow down.

Attendance
Getting back into the school routine can be a challenge after the winter break, but it is important to remember that classes start at 8:45 a.m., and students are expected to be in the classroom at that time. Students arriving after 8:55 a.m. are marked tardy, and they have already missed the warm up sessions and class meetings with their classmates. Please make sure your child arrives at school on time.

Career Day
Do you, another family member, friend, or neighbor have an interesting job you would like to talk about at our annual Career Day? It is a wonderful way to open up the world of work for our students. Please consider coming to Career Day on Friday morning, February 15th. If you are interested or know someone who is interested, please contact Mrs. Leventhal at (202) 282-1243 or email her at maureen.leventhal@dc.gov.

PEP Classes
PEP is offering its "PEP I: Becoming a More Encouraging Parent" class in several locations this winter, including Rockville, Silver Spring, and Kensington, Maryland. Specific class times and locations are listed below. PEP I is a class designed for parents of children ages 4-12 and provides parents the tools to build a positive relationship with their child based on mutual respect and cooperation.

There is a free introduction, "Why Don't My Children Listen to Me?" on Saturday, January 5, 1-2:30 pm, Kensington Park Library, Kensington, MD.

All PEP programs require preregistration. To register for the free intro or for PEP I, call PEP at 301-929-8824. For more information and to view PEP's entire winter schedule, visit www.PEPparent.org.

Principal's picturePrincipal's Letter

Dear Janney Community,

I hope everyone enjoyed the break and is having a Happy New Year in 2008. It's still early, but my resolution to exercise more frequently is still intact. Woo hoo, only 51 more weeks to go!

The kids were a little lethargic coming into school yesterday and getting back into the school routine. The teachers were raring to go, though, after three good days of professional development on January 2nd-4th. We spent some quality time as a staff, looking at our literacy program and classroom libraries and doing some work in the upper grades preparing for the DC CAS in the spring.

Your kids may have already shared the news with you but there will be no homework this week. This is a special treat for reaching the "1,000th paw print" plateau. As part of our school-wide behavior plan, we celebrate every time we reach a thousand paw prints. This week we are also giving out our "kid paws." These paw prints are smaller in size but larger in meaning as each student is given six to give out to individuals they feel exemplify the Janney rule of "Respect." They can be given out at school or at home. Unlike the regular paw prints that teachers give out, we don't collect them back in the office so if you're fortunate enough to be a recipient, please feel free to color the paw print and share it with a loved one, but you can put it on the fridge or have it framed instead of turning them in to Ms. Watkins.

As a reminder, January 18th is the last day of the 2nd quarter.  The following Friday, January 25th, is an early dismissal day for teacher record keeping.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
