Auction Check-Off List
· Tell us you're coming. Tickets are $25, turn your reply card in to the auction box, where Lisa Wackler will pick them up. Tickets can be purchased at the door, but it will be faster for you and easier for us if you tell us before February 2.
· Bring your checkbook to the auction. We do accept payment by credit card but if you can write us a check, we won't have to pay as much in bank fees.
· Bring your catalog and plan your bidding strategy. The catalog is also available online at www.janneyschool.org. There are some fabulous items-lots of them- and you won't want to miss anything. Remember: bidding begins at 7 pm, and the first section, "Indulge, Great Escapes, and House Beautiful," closes at 8:15 pm. Arrive on time to get in on some great deals.
· Volunteer to help. We need help with set-up and clean-up. If you can help out, please contact Anita Seline at amseline@aol.com or Melissa Torgovitsky at storgovitsky@aol.com. If clean-up is really what you want to do (they are a fun crowd), please email Mary Agnes Carey at macarey@cq.com.
Some items of note at this year's auction:
Looking for some fun events for your Janney socialite calendar? Sign up for one of these parties and enjoy good food, good talk, and good company:
Derby Day Party, Saturday, May 3. Watch the ponies run and savor Kentucky drink and fare at the home of the Torgovitskys. Wining and Dining #509.
The ever-popular South of the Border Party will be held on Saturday, May 17, and features a tequila tasting, tapas, and margaritas. Wining and Dining #519.
Dinner with Mary Cheh on Saturday, March 8 (date is wrong in the catalog). Hobnob with our local councilwoman at the home of Sherry Ettleson and Dan Weiss. Great Escapes #608.
The Italian Harvest Feast, which will take you from antipasto to dolci, Saturday, September 27. Wining and Dining #543.
Want to run your own fun? Check out the Great Escapes section where Janney parents have offered a night of Scrabble, a night of poker, or a night of film and fun. Or, think about your kids and get them an outing with their teacher or one of their favorite "specials" such as Ms. Morrison, Mr. Harvey, Ms. Langford, Mr. Jones, Ms. Murphy, the Janney librarians, Ms. Dedolph, Ms. Bellisimo, Ms. Polk, Mr. Scroggins, or Ms. Leventhal. They all can be found in the Teacher Feature section, which closes at 9:15 pm.
All this and more are waiting for you at Carnevale-Janney Auction 2008. We'll see you at the Katzen Arts Center at American University Saturday.

Counselor's Corner
"10 Who Are 10" Competition This is the fifteenth year of the JW Marriott citywide competition "10 Who Are 10." "10 Who Are 10" is open to 10-year-olds in DC Public Schools. One student will be chosen from Janney to go on to compete with other 10-year-olds for a $2,500 college scholarship grant. I will be talking to students in the 4th and 5th grades about the competition, but any student whose 10th birthday falls between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008, is eligible to apply. The theme this year is "My Name is [Historical Person]." Students will be asked to become his or her favorite person in history and submit a project that describes an event in which he or she embodies that person. Sounds like a fun theme and I look forward to working with students to develop their projects. If you are interested in finding out more about "10 Who Are 10," please contact Mrs. Leventhal at 282-1243 or maureen.leventhal@dc.gov.
Career Day A final call to any parents, grandparents, family members, or close friends who would like to participate in Career Day at Janney. Career Day is on February 15 from 9-11 am. If you are interested in participating, please contact Mrs. Leventhal.
-Maureen Leventhal, Janney Counselor
