A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

We just want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Melissa Torgovitsky, Anita Seline and the many, many others on the Auction team.  What a great event it was!  Not only did parents, teachers and staff have a BLAST we showed how much we want to support great staff, great teachers, a great principal, and a great school!

The fun continues with the on-line auction!  The on-line auction begins on Thursday, February 7th and closes on Tuesday, February 12th .  Check out the website at www.janneyschool.org,  and encourage family and members and friends to bid and help make it a resounding success!

Two outstanding PTA volunteers need to be singled out so that all the Janney community can understand their incredible multi-year contribution.  For years the whole school has benefited from the good humor, energy, creativity and organizing talents of Anita Seline and Melissa Torgovitsky, who chaired the Janney Auction.  This, sadly, was their last of many fun-filled years.  Special thanks go to their children and husbands who sacrificed a great deal annually while Anita and Melissa worked on this always fun, always classy, always memorable, event.  Every year they have brought experience, creativity, and enthusiasm to this enterprise.  They, and their families, cannot be thanked enough.

We are looking for a few brave souls to fill their enormous shoes next year. It's such a huge part of the PTA's fundraising and a really important way to contribute - as well as being a lot of fun. So please consider being a part of the auction team for next year and email us if you are interested.

Next week's PTA meeting (which will be held in the library because of the primary voting taking place in the gym) promises to be really interesting.  We have a guest speaker, Deborah Roffman, who will speak about "Sex and Sensibility: The Thinking Parents Guide to Talking Sense about Sex."   We all agree that children learn their values by constantly watching the people who care for them - by seeing what we do and how we act - even noting our silences on certain subjects. Our kids are learning about sexuality every day whether we talk about it with them or not!  Good sexuality education is based on the idea that loving and caring parents actively discover a child's needs for information and then find ways to fill those needs. Not sure how to deal with this, um, touchy topic? (pun intended) Please come to the library, on February 12th at 7:15 for a brief PTA meeting followed by a really helpful conversation with Ms. Roffman.

Have a great week,

THE ONLINE AUCTION STARTS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH!!!!!

Didn't get that fabulous item you wanted at the auction? Or missed the social event of the school year? Here's your second chance to support our school. All eBay glitches have been corrected, and we are ready to go with the Online Auction.  This Thursday evening, February 7th, at 8:00 pm bidding will open on over 100 fabulous online items. You can find all of the online items listed in your Auction Catalog, and included in the THT today is a reminder flyer with simple "how to" instructions on setting up Paypal and Ebay accounts, which you will need to do in order to participate.

The Online Auction will close between 8 pm and 9 pm on Tuesday, February 12th, so you will have five days to bid in the comfort of your home or office. Use the link to the online auction that you will find on the Janney School website, www.janneyschool.org, to go straight to the Janney listings. Please spread the word and forward the Janney website link to your family, friends, and neighbors--this is an opportunity for everyone in the Janney community both near and far to support our school. Check back often and don't let that perfect item get away! Questions? Contact Dianne Bock at dibock@starpower.net or 202-364-9858.

FEBRUARY'S PTA MEETING --- DON'T MISS IT!

Mark your calendar NOW for next Tuesday, February 12th at 7:15pm. We are fortunate to have Deborah Roffman, noted human sexuality educator coming to Janney to speak at our monthly PTA meeting. She is the author of Sex and Sensibility: The Thinking Parent's Guide to Talking Sense about Sex and will be talking to our parent group on this important subject. Her presentation will be held in the library at 7:30pm, just after the PTA meeting at 7:15. You'll be sorry if you miss it.  Remember, due to the Primaries being held in the gym, the PTA meeting will take place in the library.
THE JANNEY PLAYERS PRESENT "DAMN YANKEES" FEBRUARY 22ND & 23RD

Are you ready for baseball?  Nothing could get you in the mood for the season more than seeing our own Janney Players as they present "Damn Yankees," a devilish musical comedy set during the 1950s in Washington, DC.  This Broadway Musical has charmed audiences for 50 years, and this year, the Janney Players become the underdog Washington Senators (with under-worldly powers), as they chase the New York Yankees for the Pennant.  Will they be able to stop the Yankees from their domination of the League?

The shows are Friday, February 22nd   at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, February 23rd, at 2:00 p.m. at Deal Middle School.  Tickets are $5 for general seating and $15 for reserved seating.  There is free, but limited, parking at Deal.  Refreshments will be sold during intermission.
Bring the whole family and have yourself a ball as you watch the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders put on another terrific show.  You might even want to show up in your Nationals gear to really get yourself in the spirit!

PROPS NEEDED FOR DAMN YANKEES

The Janney musical is in desperate need of a few additional props.

Please let Kate Taylor (537-1828; taylorkl@georgetown.edu) know if you can help out.

A desk, sturdy enough for a kid to sit on it
A big potted plant, fake, with a sturdy pot
A wooden step ladder, 'A' frame with 3 steps

The performances are on February 22 (7pm) and 23rd (2pm) at Deal.  We hope you will plan to come!

**ATTENTION SOCCER COACHES**

INTERESTED IN USING THE JANNEY FIELD FOR SOCCER PRACTICE THIS SPRING?

A new procedure for assigning practice times is being rolled out.  Starting with this upcoming Spring season, we will be assigning practice times through a lottery process.  If you are interested in using the Janney field for soccer practice this Spring and want to be included in the lottery and to learn more about how the lottery process will work, it is important that you contact Jill Palmer at jill.palmer@ngc.com before February 15th.  If we do not hear from you by February 15, your team will not be included in the lottery.

LITTLE LEAGUE TEAMS ORGANIZING NOW

The Northwest Washington Little League offers baseball for boys and girls ages 6 to 16, and softball for girls 9 to 14. The League has a positive, kid-focused philosophy, and our players enjoy themselves, learn a lot and return year after year. All kids get equal time playing.

Teams are forming now for the Spring season for the T-Ball, AA, AAA, Majors, and Prep/Senior levels and for Girls Softball. Janney kids play in all of our divisions. New players are welcome. Get your application in immediately to be sure there is a place for your child.

Go to www.nwlldc.org for information on our online registration, and further information about the League.

Crossing cartoonSafety Patrol Tip of the Week

Did you know that 80% of DC residents do not own a car? That would certainly make Janney a safer place, especially at drop off or pick up! Don't become a pedestrian tragedy! Follow all directions and signals of the student safety patrol!!

February 5, 2008
To the Janney Community:

WOW!  What a fabulous auction!  Many, many thanks to Melissa and Anita for the incredible amount of time they spent in organizing this wonderful and important event.  Throughout the whole process they remained efficient, energetic, gracious, and focused.  Their good cheer and energy never wavered.  Thanks as well to the countless number of others who helped with the project, from donations to clean-up as well as to all of you who came and supported the school financially by bidding on items.  It was a great event and I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves.

Janney received a very nice honor last week from the Dinner Program for Homeless Women (DPHW).  They had an evening celebration on Thursday to thank Janney (along with other groups) for making significant contributions to the program as they continue to support women who are struggling with issues of homelessness.  Three individuals need special thanks and recognition for their support.  First and foremost, Camille Martone deserves some heartfelt thanks for all of her efforts with our monthly food donations.  She spends many hours at the shelter and deserves recognition for her tireless support.  Next, Ms. Zallman deserves recognition for her annual efforts in organizing the "walk to end homelessness" which benefits DPHW.  Finally, Ms. Green very quietly donates her time to organize the "bean snappers" and supports the food collection in other ways.  Pawprints for all three!!!!

Your child should have his/her report card in an envelope in the THT today.  Please be sure to dig it out and return the envelope (signed) so we know you got it.

This Friday is Open House at 9:15.  Please spread the word to any prospective parents you may know.  Current parents are also welcome and as always, if you're interested in being a tour guide, please contact myself or the Open House chairs, Lori Ashford and Sharon Masling.

Today marks the beginning of the PK lottery.  You can pick up applications in the main office and they are due no later than February 14th.  Students must be four by September 30, 2008 to be eligible and you must live in our neighborhood boundary.

The "Out-of-Boundary" (OOB) lottery has been extended and will now run until March 12th.  It can be accessed online at the DCPS website, www.k12.dc.us.  Families don't need to reapply for Janney, but 6th graders who are OOB for Deal do need to apply.  Please check that you are coming from a "sending" school and you will receive preference over all other applicants after siblings of current Deal students.

Finally, please remember that our parking lot is for staff members only.  It is very difficult to get in and out of so please refrain from using it for drop-off or pick-up.  Thank you.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
Principal
