The Janney Players Present "Damn Yankees" This Weekend: February 22 & 23

Are you ready for baseball? Nothing could get you in the mood for the season more than seeing our own Janney Players as they present "Damn Yankees," a devilish musical comedy set during the 1950s in Washington, DC. This Broadway musical has charmed audiences for 50 years, and this year, the Janney Players become the underdog Washington Senators (with under-worldly powers), as they chase the New York Yankees for the Pennant. Will they be able to stop the Yankees from their domination of the League?

The shows are this Friday, February 22, at 7 pm, and Saturday, February 23, at 2 pm at Deal Middle School. Tickets go on sale today, February 19, before and after school (and Wednesday at JED pick-up) and are $5 for general seating and $15 for reserved seating. There is free, but limited, parking at Deal. Refreshments will be sold during intermission.

Bring the whole family and have yourself a ball as you watch the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders put on another terrific show. You might even want to show up in your Nationals gear to really get yourself in the spirit!
Library Media Center Update
from Pat Brown, Janney Librarian

Curious about your child's activity in the Janney library? Then please read on...

Pre-K through 3rd grade students began the month by reading about "what illustrators do" and examining examples of different mediums used to illustrate picture books. The students are now participating in a Mock Caldecott Award Contest. We are reading several Caldecott contenders and voting on which book Janney School thinks should win the annual illustration award.

The 4th grade has been learning word-processing skills and generating title pages with a brief written piece. We will begin learning about key word searching and use these skills to research information for a project about inventors. The information they collect will be used to create a trading card on their inventor. Students will then be able to trade cards with their classmates.

The 5th grade has been using key word and boolean search strategies to learn how to broaden and narrow a search topic. They will use these search skills to research a particular author, and then create a trading card that can be exchanged with other students in the class. They will also write a recommendation of their favorite book by that author.

The 6th grade has already learned the key word search skills. They are using these skills to research different countries that are members of the UN. Students will find basic current information about the country to create a trading card to share with classmates. They will also research environmental, educational, and economic issues for their particular country and use this information to discuss and share the status of the various countries.

Coming Soon to a Classroom Near You!
Dr. Seuss's Birthday and Read Across America Celebrations

Calling out to all our Pre-K through 3rd grade students: it's nearly time to get out those red and white clothes and celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday and Read Across America. On Monday, March 3, wear your red and whites, bring a book to exchange, and enjoy a special Read Across America assembly with very special guests including, among others, the Cat in the Hat! Students in 4th grade through 6th grade: plan to bring a book for your very own book exchange. Parents interested in volunteering on March 3: Please contact Nicky Goren at ngoren@gmail.com. Look for the Read Across America/Dr. Seuss flyer in next week's take home Tuesday.

International Night Coming March 14

Come celebrate the many cultures of the Janney community! International Night is just a few short weeks away-Friday, March 14-so please start thinking about how you or your children can get in on the fun. Take some time to think about whether you or your children would be willing to:

· dance, sing, or play music related to your ethnic heritage,
· share a collection of some kind representing your family's culture,
· share a photo or art display from a particular culture,
· demonstrate a particular culture's traditional craft,
· or share anything else that honors your ethnic heritage or culture!

Still scratching your head and and wondering what you can do? Don't worry! There are plenty of opportunities to help! We still have lots of opportunities for folks to help the night of the event: greeters, helping performers set up, and the ever popular clean-up (just to name a few opportunities). Also, if you know you have (or even think you might have) a talent or collection you want to share for International Night, we would love to know this as well.

The next meeting of all volunteers will be Friday, February 22, right after drop off. Please contact Jasmeet Seehra if you would like to volunteer or have questions at 202-395-3123 or jseehra@omb.eop.gov.

Ms. Power-who won a Pulitzer Prize for her book A Problem from Hell and is one of the world's most prominent and effective voices against the genocide in Darfur-will be at Politics & Prose to discuss her new book, Chasing the Flame, about the courageous and talented diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, who died in Iraq in 2003. Attention Kindergarten, Pre-K, and Pre-Pre-K Parents!
On Friday, February 29 (conference day), and Saturday, March 1, children's book author and Janney mom Erica Perl will be performing at Imagination Stage. Her performance is part of Imagination Stage's new StoryTheatre series, which was designed especially for the youngest theatergoers: 1 to 6 year olds.

Each StoryTheatre presentation is a lively, interactive storytelling performance designed to appeal to young children. Erica's performance will be unique because she will use her books, Ninety-three in My Family and Chicken Bedtime Is Really Early, and their wonderful illustrations (which will be projected on a giant screen) to bring the audience into the stories. In addition, she will talk with the kids about how books are made and emphasize the fun of the creative process. She will also sign books after the Saturday shows. And, yes, she will wear her chicken hat.

Erica reports that the Friday (2/29) shows are almost sold out, but Imagination Stage just added a second Saturday (3/1) morning show so there should still be seats available if you call soon. For more information or to order tickets, call the Imagination Stage box office at (301) 280-1660 or go to www.imaginationstage.com/Our%20Shows/story_theatre_series.htm

Lousy Bedtime Routines an Issue at Your House?

Parents will learn to recognize the signs of insufficient and disordered sleep, and get tips on how to address those issues. The meeting begins at 6:45 in the Deal auditorium. Everyone is welcome-please join us!

Subject May Not Be Suitable for Kids!
Do you find yourself stumbling when your child asks you what the DC license plate slogan is about? Has your child wondered aloud why our senator is a mere shadow? And remember the puzzled look on your children's faces the time you took them down to that Congressional hearing and our mayor was politely explaining to the corrupt and angry politician from San Diego why our budget includes items that might adversely impact the statesman's yacht buddies? Wasn't that awkward?!

All DC parents get red-faced and uncomfortable trying to answer these tricky questions for our children openly and honestly. In the meantime, distract them with field trips to experience democracy in action and justice-driven workshops to help make our community better.

Principal's picturePrincipal's Letter

Dear Janney Community:

Many thanks to Lori Ashford and Sharon Masling for coordinating another successful Open House. Thanks as well to Kate Laguarda for her always yummy refreshments and to the many parents who accompanied our student tour guides.

This weekend is the school musical, "Damn Yankees," in the Deal Auditorium. Friday's show is at 7:00 pm and Saturday's is at 2:00 pm. This is a fun event and I strongly encourage families with younger kids to attend as it's a great way to get your kids excited about the arts. The Janney Band plays the opening chorus so don't be late!

The "Out-of-Boundary" (OOB) lottery has been extended and will now run until March 12th. It can be accessed online at the DCPS website, www.k12.dc.us. Families don't need to reapply for Janney, but 6th graders who are OOB for Deal do need to apply. Please check that you are coming from a "sending" school and you will receive preference over all other applicants after siblings of current Deal students.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
