A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Congratulations to the girl's basketball team!  City Champs!  Go Jaguars!

Please come to the PTA meeting next Tuesday, March 11th to hear our math specialist Mrs. Langford speak about Everyday Math. The meeting is at 7:15 in the all-purpose room and babysitting will be provided.

International Night is coming up on March 14th.   Always a really fun event with a great potluck, so get out your recipe books as everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share that night.   If you have a half hour or so to help during the event please contact Emily Bazelon, emily.bazelon@slate.com or Lauren Case, lec619@comcast.net.

Have a great week,

THANK YOU, JANNEY!!

Dear Mr. Cartland, Teachers, Fellow Students and Parents:

Thank you so much for all your incredible support throughout our basketball season.  Your show of support was truly unbelievable.  So many of you came and cheered us on at so many of our games, especially at the City Championship game!  It was remarkable to watch two bus loads of Janney students and teachers walking into the gym at the start of the game and cheering us on loudly throughout the entire game!  And, you just can't imagine how much the Pep Rally and each and every high-five and good-luck wish motivated us.  Most of all, your incredible support (in so many different ways) touched us all!  We could not have done it without all of you! From the bottom of our hearts -- thank you, Janney!!!

And, of course, a special thanks to Mr. Harvey and Ms. Green for being the best basketball coaches a team could have!!!

The Lady Jaguars

FREE FOOD (and much more!!!)

Now that we have your attention (hopefully), just a reminder that INTERNATIONAL NIGHT is right around the corner.  Mark your calendars for Friday, March 14th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  For those new to the Janney community, International Night is an evening of culture and food from all over the world.  All members of the Janney community --  students, staff and families -- are invited to share in this night of international food and entertainment.  There'll be some familiar International Night traditions, but we're hoping to start some new ones too!  Look out for more details about the evening's events in the near future.

If you would like to share anything that honors your family's culture or heritage (a collection, a photo or art display, a craft . . . anything!) or if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Emily Bazelon at emily.bazelon@slate.com or Lauren Case at lec619@comcast.net.

If anyone has ties to any of the local embassies and thinks the embassy would like to contribute or participate in our celebration, please email Julie Slattery at jslattery@bloomberg.net.
Soup Kitchen News

We will not be bringing food to the soup kitchen next month as the 4th Wednesday lands in the middle of spring break.  We will resume on the 4th Wednesday the following month - April 23.  Please mark your calendars and remember, if you signed up for snacks, cookies, salad stuff, bread, lasagna, green beans, or ice cream, you will get a reminder as well.  Thanks for all the food this past Wednesday.  It is always appreciated!  Finally, if you have signed up to make lasagna, we really count on you bringing it into school by noon.  We were short several lasagnas on Wednesday and had to stop on the way to buy a few.  If for some reason you can't bring in the lasagna you have signed up to bring, please call Camille Marthe at 362-7555 by Wednesday morning.  There can be up to 95 women at the dinner so every lasagna counts.  Thanks for your help and cooperation.

Thank you to the entire Damn Yankees makeup crew!!!

This was the best makeup crew in my play history.   Getting 85 children stage-ready was no easy feat so thank you to all of you.  It couldn't have happened without you including the group of former students who knew the drill so well.  To those who pitched in at the last minute or whose name I may have forgotten - know you were greatly appreciated as well.

March 4, 2008

To the Janney Community:

How about those Lady Jaguars!?  In a very spirited match, the Lady Jaguars prevailed over Lafayette in the City Championship game, 25-20.  We had a 12 point lead at half-time but Lafayette showed their spirit by clawing their way back into the game.  Ultimately though, the Jaguars rallied and won the day.  Congratulations to Mr. Harvey and Ms. Green for doing a tremendous job coaching, Mercedes Suarez for being the tournament MVP, Pooja Duleep for making the all-tournament team, and to the entire team for a fabulous season.  Thanks to all those that cheered them throughout and particularly for the 90 or so fans that came to the title game.

Last Thursday, the three developers that had responded to the city's RFP revealed their plans.  For those that missed the meeting, the plans should be posted soon on the Tenley-Janney blog (http://tenley-janney.blogspot.com) as well as the website for the Office of Planning (http://dcbiz.dc.gov).  In the Take Home Tuesday (THT), there is a survey for folks to fill out if they want to give the SIT any feedback about the three plans.  ANC 3E is also hosting a second public meeting this Thursday at St. Ann's Church at 7:00 p.m. (see flyer in THT).  The city is planning on having a very brief period for comments before reviewing the proposals and making a decision this month.  This has been a long discussion but it's coming together very quickly and there is just a small window for making your voice heard on the issue.  I've also copied into the THT the letter that the SIT sent when the RFP was initially announced.  This is a good reference point for those that are looking for a "school-specific" view on the process.  Obviously the issues that are most important for Janney are safety of children, protection of green space, and assurance that the school will get a renovation and addition in a timely fashion.  Please note that although the three proposals show plans for where the addition to the school could go, those decisions will ultimately be left to DCPS.  If the city moves forward and accepts one of the proposals, this doesn't mean that DCPS will necessarily implement the plans that developer has sketched for the school.

Many thanks to Barbara Murphy and all the parent volunteers for making Dr. Seuss's birthday such a fun day.  In addition to numerous parents, we also had firefighters (with a cool truck) and the 2nd District Police Commander.  As always though, Ms. Watkins and Ms. Green stole the show with their compelling portrayals of Thing 1 and Thing 2 from The Cat in the Hat.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Scott Cartland
