A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

What a terrific International Night!

The international welcome was super, the food was delicious, and our kids were riveted by music, singing, dancing, warriors, story tellers, crafts, egg-painting, origami, games, maps, and exhibits. It took a huge crowd of volunteers and paid performers to make the event so varied and colorful, but an even bigger crowd had a great time and learned something! Thanks to the organizers Jasmeet Seehra, Tara Huber, Lauren Case, and Emily Bazelon, who made this great event possible!

Also thanks to the many folks who make activities like this at Janney possible, all the hard-working parents who volunteer, raise, or give money for the PTA. Remember, it is not just the auction, but also the raffle, the Sally Foster fundraiser, and the student support fee that enrich the academic environment at Janney. The Janney PTA raises a great deal of money to support the school, and we believe you and your kids would notice if the PTA did not supplement the DCPS budget.

The PTA has bought your children books for the library, educational materials for classrooms, copiers, a cleaner school, working computers, and staff that your children rely on, every day. While DCPS has been picking up more and more, DCPS is notoriously unreliable, and subject to annual appropriations, freezes, and delays. It is hard to run a huge operation with day-to-day expenses with an erratic authority to pay your bills. Scott Cartland, Ann Beumel, and our PTA dollars, managed through the PTA board and PTA bookkeeper Malin Kerwin, make this huge enterprise run smoothly.

Only this year, DCPS froze, and eventually cut, Janney's budget. Did you or your kids feel that impact? Many kids in city schools did, but due to the ballast the Janney PTA provides, the Janney boat barely rocked. Probably, the stability of Janney, the enriched school environment, and the suberb education that your kids get is one of the things you value most about your life.

That's why we ask you to give the two things you value most, time and money, to the PTA. If you are new to the school, have never been involved, or have a little more energy to give, please contact us in the next week. We'd love to discuss with you the many ways the PTA needs help in the 2008-2009 school year.

Thanks,

To the Janney Community:

I want to thank all the volunteers who helped make International Night such a fun and educational event. A special thank you goes to the coordinators of the event, Jasmeet Sehra, Lauren Case, Tara Huber, and Emily Bazelon for pulling everything together. It was a wonderful evening and a nice example of the diversity in our community.

The staff and I have been reviewing the school's security policy and would like to ask for help from our parents. When you come to visit the school, please sign in and put on a visitor's badge. Our campus is very open and it is helpful to have folks sign in at the security desk. Staff members will be approaching adults who are not familiar to them and are not wearing a badge. If you are approached by a staff member, please don't take it personally; they're just trying to ensure that all of our children are safe.

The end of the third advisory period is this Thursday and report cards will go home on April 15th.

The city has posted the three proposals for the Public-Private Partnership on their website. You can find a link to the proposals as well as other information on the topic at the Janney website (www.janneyschool.org).

I hope everyone has an enjoyable spring break. Enjoy the warmer weather and get those little people outdoors. When indoors, enjoy a good book (or four!).

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
