A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Hard to believe but we have less than a month of the school year left!

We want to say thank you to all the PTA committee chairs that have volunteered so much time this past year. Janney is an exciting, welcoming, stimulating, supportive, memorable, and fun learning environment because of the work you did.  Many of you have agreed to chair your particular committee again next year, but some of you understandably need to pass the torch at this point.

We are looking for some energetic folks to step in. Please consider whether you could contribute by becoming a new Room Parent Coordinator, Cybrary Volunteers Coordinator, PTA membership chair, or tracking down matching gifts. Each of these committees is invaluable to our strong school, for example, matching gifts from parent's employers brought Janney $10,000 last year! We need someone to head the Teacher/Staff Appreciation Committee as well, where would we be without our wonderful teachers and staff? Leslie Dembinski has agreed to chair the Fall Picnic yet again but would like to have a co-chair that would then be willing to organize next year's Spring Picnic as that will be her final picnic as a Janney parent.  If you are interested in any of these committees, or any committee not listed here, and would like to more about the responsibilities they entail, please let us know!

Finally, we are also forming a very important fundraising committee that will be charged with organizing our fundraisers next year. We already have some wonderful volunteers for this group, but we want all the fundraising ideas we can get so please consider joining this fun and
lively group and chipping in! Melissa Torgovitsky (Storgovitsky@aol.com) will be coordinating this effort, so please contact her if you are willing to help! The committee will meet on June 5th.

If you missed the PTA meeting last week, a few important things happened.

Congratulations to the incoming Executive Board and thanks again for giving your time:

Rennie Anderson and Lucy Smiles, co-presidents
Scott Cheney and Jonathon McHugh, co-presidents-elect
Gerry Gretschel and Dan Rosenthal, co-treasuers
Elizabeth Levenson and Sharon Masling, co-secretaries

We also voted to approve the three parents who submitted their names to the Principal Selection Committee, Elaine Pirozzi, Andrea McCabe and Willa Morris.

The changes to the by-laws that were proposed in April were approved as well. The new by-laws are posted on the Janney website.

Finally, the proposed budget for 2008-2009 was presented. The budget is posted on the Janney website as well. If you have comments, it would be most helpful if you could submit them before the June membership meeting when we will officially approve a budget for next year.

Have a wonderful week!

The school has morning only and full-day openings in our 3- and 4-year-old classes. Anyone who is interested should contact Bruce Kahan, Director, at 202-362-8746. The school is located in Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church, at the corner of Nebraska and New Mexico avenues, across the street from American University.

To the Janney community:

Wow! The spring band concert was wonderful. The kids sounded incredible and the ice cream was delicious. At the end of the night, there was a "jam session" featuring current band members as well as alumni (and a parent too). There was classical music, some jazz, and two rock numbers at the end (the Trotters played "Tequila" with Leander on sax, and a garage band called "Evolution" featuring three recent Janney grads closed the show with a number from Stone Temple Pilots). It was a wonderful event and a real tribute to Sterling Scroggins who, through his patient approach over time, has nurtured and grown a really incredible band here at Janney. There was clearly some kind of dust or particle matter in the air because my eyes got wet about three songs into the show as I reflected on how nice it is to hear the band every morning at 8:00 and to see Sterling bounding through the door with a grin on his face. He is a real gem in our community.

There has been a good buzz developing about the number of vacancies for next year. Here's the list so far:

Ermyn Roberts, 3rd Grade- Retiring
Dolda Butler, 2nd Grade - Moving to Atlanta
Sarah Cassidy, 3rd Grade - Moving out of the area
Andrea Litvack, 4th Grade - Moving to New Jersey
Melissa Barry, 5th Grade - Moving to New York (will be a vacancy in 6th grade)
Meredith Dedolph, SPED, Maternity leave
Barbara Murphy, Reading Specialist, Changing schools

As you can see from the list, the majority of teachers are leaving to move out of the area, and in all cases, the primary reason is that a spouse or significant other is taking a job in another part of the country. I interviewed some great candidates at a DCPS hiring fair last week, and our personnel committee saw 12 candidates at Janney as well. We've got some really phenomenal candidates, and I'll have all the vacant positions filled by June. Janney is a school with great traditions and stability due to the confluence of great kids, supportive parents, and dynamic teachers. Although this is more change than in most years, the stability and strength that is at the core of the school will remain intact.

DCPS announced their plans for the 26 schools in restructuring which means that I can finally be public about where I'm going. Next year, I'll be at Webb/Wheatley ES in the Trinidad neighborhood of NE, Washington. Webb/Wheatley is in the first group of schools that the federal No Child Left Behind law mandates some form of "corrective action." In this case, the entire teaching staff will be "reconstituted," meaning that they all must reapply for their jobs. In next week's newsletter, I'll have a great deal more information about the school and what's happening. Thanks for all the continued support.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
