| Janney/Lafayette Informal MathCounts Competition
Last Monday, May 19, almost 20 Janney fifth- and sixth-graders joined about 20 Lafayette students, for our first ever Janney/Lafayette Informal MathCounts Competition. Lafayette hosted the event. During the competition students individually solved 15 problems within 30 minutes. Thereafter teams of three or four students collaboratively solved a set of five problems. In a whole group debriefing session students shared their solution strategies. After a short snack break Janney teams faced off against Lafayette teams for a Jeopardy style competition. Janney students repeatedly solved complex problems and often beat the competition to the buzzer. The event was a wonderful opportunity to introduce our fifth-graders to the MathCounts style of competition in preparation for next year's season. Likewise, it was a great opportunity for our sixth-graders to get to know their Lafayette counterparts who may well be their fellow team members in MathCounts at Deal.

The party will be held in the Great Hall of St. Columba's Episcopal Church, corner of 42nd and Albemarle streets, at 4 pm. Come and wish Mrs. Roberts well as she starts a new chapter in her life. All former students of Mrs. Roberts are invited to attend as well, so please spread the word to your neighbors and friends who are Janney alumni. | Brainstorming Future PTA Fundraising
Calling all energetic, conscientious, creative and fun individuals for a very important meeting of the minds. Join us as we usher in a new era at Janney. On Thursday, June 5th at 7:30 pm all interested parties are invited to the home of Melissa Torgovitsky at 4712 Asbury Place, NW to brainstorm the future of fundraising at Janney. DCPS is stepping up, but your PTA still is responsible for a lot of what makes Janney function. We welcome your input on how this well oiled machine will chug into the future. There has been much talk about what families want and expect, and here is your opportunity to put in your two cents. Should the auction be retired? Are we ready for something other than wrapping paper? Was the item driven raffle preferred over the cash prizes? These are questions that are being bantered across the benches at pickup time and on the playground, but what are the answers? We would love to hear your thoughts. Join Fundraising Chairs, Melissa Torgovitsky and Lisa Kennelly, as well as our current and future PTA presidents, as we work through some ideas and set up some guidelines for next year's fundraising events. Our primary goal is to get some people thinking and working through the summer and hit the ground running when the 2008/09 school year starts. Please email either of us at storgovitsky@aol.com for Melissa or kennellyadventure@rcn.com for Lisa. We would love to hear from you if you plan to attend so that we can make plans for the masses expected. If you cannot make it on June 5th but are interested in participating in the process, then please share those intentions with us as well. We need all the help that we can get to tackle the various aspects of fundraising for the school and look forward to a productive and energized conversation. |
| Scott Cartland Farewell
Now that it has finally sunk in that Scott Cartland will no longer be principal here at Janney, we need to find a way to say goodbye in Janney style. Mr. Cartland is leaving Janney to fulfill his mission of ensuring that more children in this city are given an opportunity to receive a good education. Please join us in saying farewell and good luck to Scott Cartland on Friday, June 6, at 5:00 pm on the Janney blacktop (or in the gym if it's raining.) Be sure to check the listserv for any additional updates. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Malin: malin1@verizon.net or 202-362-9055 or Jennifer: edjook8tr@aol.com.

New Band Instruments Need Summer Homes
The DCPS has given Janney 30 brand new band instruments this year: Flutes, clarinets, trumpets, saxophones, horns, and drums. We would like to find third, fourth, and fifth graders who have the interest and time to care for them this summer. The instruments need to be taken out of their cases and played five times per week. In addition, the players need to be willing to take 10 weekly lessons during the summer to learn how to play their instrument. And, most importantly, the new instruments need names. Since the children would be the first to play them, they get to name them and train them to play the kind of music they like. For more information, email me at sscrogg@american.edu. I will be out of town until June 5 but will be available by email from to time to time.

A Message from the Health Suite
Dear Parents/Guardians of new Janney ES students and rising K, 1, 3, & 5th Graders: A packet of health forms for School Year 2008-2009 was sent out on May 20th. All children entering the targeted grades listed above must have a new health certificate and dental record completed for entry into school in the fall. These certificates should be based on an exam done after April 15, 2008. www.k12.dc.us/schools/immunization.htm. Please note these additional requirements: --All students entering the system must have a recent TB test. --Students under the age of six years old must have a lead test. --Immunizations must be complete according to age requirements. Although all current students are up to date with their immunizations, some rising 5th graders may need a tetanus booster-check with your pediatrician. If your child has allergies or serious health problems (past or current), please make sure this information is communicated on the health certificate in the section titled Part 2 A, B, and C. We appreciate knowing this information as soon as possible for planning purposes (ex., serious peanut allergy). Many Doctors overlooked these sections; parents please check these forms before submitting them to school. I enclosed for your convenience a medication authorization form. If your child needs medication on a daily, emergency, or as needed basis, this form should be completed by the first day of school. The top half is completed by the parent, the doctor should complete the bottom half. Medications must be provided as they come from the pharmacy (labeled with the child's name, dosing instructions, etc.) If your child needs an over the counter preparation such as Tylenol, this form is still required and a sealed bottle or box of the medication must be provided with your child's name on it. For questions regarding District of Columbia Immunization policies and requirements call: Jacquelyn Campbell, RN, MSN, CPNP Nurse Specialist, District of Columbia Department of Health Immunization Program, (202) 576-9324 Please feel free to call the school at 202-282-0110 if you have any questions. There will be a nurse covering the school over the summer; you may leave a message at the main office and the nurse will contact you.

Principal's Letter Dear Janney Community:
Tonight at 7:00, there will be a great chance to learn about the principal selection process. Janney's Instructional Superintendent, Francisco Millett, will be on hand to explain the process and answer any questions you may have. The meeting will be in the auditorium and will most likely conclude by 8:00. I have some very exciting news to share about plans for Janney next year. Back in November, I was invited by the Chancellor to attend a meeting of effective principals to talk about how we could have a positive impact on more kids and schools. I had already discussed with the Chancellor my willingness to take on a struggling school through the restructuring process, but another principal at the meeting, Liz Whisnant from Horace Mann, and I started talking about ways of clustering schools together for support. At the same time, a non-profit called Mass Insight released a plan called the "Turnaround Challenge" (see the entire plan at www.massinsight.org) that provided a blueprint for what we wanted to do. We submitted a proposal based on "The Turnaround Challenge" that called for the creation of a cluster of schools that would work together, sharing resources and professional development. These schools would share similar philosophies and practices and would have additional autonomy from the district to make decisions at the school level. As a result of this proposal, the "Collaborative" has been formed. The participating schools will be Brent, Hyde, Janney, Mann, Maury, Miner, Montgomery, Orr, Smothers, and Webb-Wheatley. Some of the instructional practices that will be central to these schools are balanced literacy (reader's and writer's workshop), differentiated math curricula, robust arts programs (integrated into the curricula when possible), experiential science learning, and social studies curricula that is project-based. Teachers will have shared professional development and have opportunities to work with and learn from colleagues in other buildings. One of the exciting aspects of this proposal is that it offers a wonderful opportunity to strengthen schools across the city and help build teaching capacity that will benefit a great number of students. However, this is also a proposal that will make Janney stronger as a school. Our teaching staff will benefit from the increased opportunities for professional development and sharing. Finally, it is an asset to have a formalized agreement giving the school a good degree of autonomy about instructional programs. This will help preserve and protect the instructional practices that we have been working toward over the last few years. There is a lot more to the proposal but those are the big ideas. I'm very excited about what this means not only for Janney but also for my new school, Webb-Wheatley, and I'm happy to discuss it in more detail with all who are interested. I know that there has been a level of worry about change for next year and I hope that people rightly see that this is one way to ensure that many of the wonderful things about Janney are protected. I've spent a good deal of time working with the principals in the Collaborative this year getting this plan off the ground and it's a relief to finally be able to talk about it. Please feel free to send me any questions or comments you may have.
Have a great week!
Scott Cartland Principal
