A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Wow - we're down to the final days of school and it's been a really great year!  There are many activities to wrap up the year at Janney during these next two weeks.  Please mark your calendars so you don't miss any of the events.

Congratulations to all of the graduating 6th graders!  We look forward to the clap out on June 11 and we wish you the best as you move on to your new schools.

Thank you to all of the parents who contributed so much this year by volunteering on committees, as room parents and in all sorts of other ways.  Without you Janney would not be the award winning school that it is!  We truly appreciate you!

Special thanks go to Ms. Green and Ms. Watkins, running the school behind the scenes and supporting our kids all year long.   We are sure each class is thanking their teachers and at this time of year.  We are lucky to have such incredible teachers and support staff here at Janney.  A huge THANK YOU goes out to them for all the work that they do!  Don't forget the retirement celebration for Ms. Roberts on Thursday, June 5 at 4pm in the Great Hall of St. Columba's.

Appropriately, Friday is Spirit day and no one has shown more school spirit than our fabulous Principal, Scott Cartland.  The whole school, including teachers, staff, parents and kids should come to an event to say goodbye to Scott Cartland on the black top on Friday, June 6 at 5pm.  Let us properly thank Scott for his outstanding work on behalf of our community.   It is the same night as the disco, so wear your best 70's clothes.

Our final PTA meeting of the year is next Tuesday, June 10 at 7:15pm in the all purpose room.  We will be showing out appreciation for the many Janney parents who have contributed to the school.  We will also be voting on the PTA budget for 2008-2009.  There will be an update from the Principal Selection Advisory Committee who will have interviewed candidates.  Childcare is provided.  Please join us if you can.

Thanks and have a great week!

Farewell Party for Principal Cartland

Dear Janney Community,

Now that it has finally sunk in that Scott Cartland will no longer be principal here at Janney, we need to find a way to say goodbye in Janney style. Mr. Cartland is leaving Janney to fulfill his mission of ensuring that more children in this city are given an opportunity to receive a good education.

Please join us in saying farewell and good luck to Scott Cartland on Friday, June 6, at 5pm on the Janney blacktop (or in the gym if it's raining.)

Be sure to check the list serve for any additional updates.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Ermyn Roberts Retirement Party

Mrs. Ermyn Roberts, a Janney teacher for 36 years, is retiring at the end of this school year and we will celebrate with her in Janney style on Thursday, June 5, at 4pm at a reception in her honor.  The party will be held in the Great Hall of St. Columba's Episcopal Church, corner of 42nd and Albemarle streets. Come and wish Mrs. Roberts well as she starts a new chapter in her life.  All former students of Mrs. Roberts are invited to attend as well, so please spread the word to your neighbors and friends who are Janney alumni. Please help organizers get an accurate head count for the party by sending an RSVP to robertsparty@gmail.com.

In addition, we are organizing a special gift for Mrs. Roberts. Voluntary contributions may be dropped off at the school office in an envelope marked "Roberts Party." Make checks out to Janney PTA.

Want to help with set-up or clean-up with the event? Email Anita Seline at amseline@aol.com to help out. Thanks.

Calling All Energetic, Conscientious, Creative And Fun Individuals

... for a very important meeting of the minds.  Join us as we usher in a new era at Janney.  On Thursday, June 5 at 7:30pm, all interested parties are invited to brainstorm the future of fundraising at Janney. DCPS is stepping up, but your PTA still is responsible for a lot of what makes Janney function. We welcome your input on how this well-oiled machine will chug into the future.

There has been much talk about what families want and expect, and here is your opportunity to put in your two cents.  Should the auction be retired?  Are we ready for something other than wrapping paper?  Was the item-driven raffle preferred over the cash prizes?  These are questions that are being bantered across the benches at pickup time and on the playground, but what are the answers?  We would love to hear your thoughts.

Join Fundraising Chairs, Melissa Torgovitsky and Lisa Kennelly, as well as our current and future PTA presidents, as we work through some ideas and set up some guidelines for next year's fundraising events.  Our primary goal is to get some people thinking and working through the summer and hit the ground running when the 2008/09 school year starts.  Please email your intent to Melissa at storgovitsky@aol.com or Lisa at kennellyadventure@rcn.com.  We would love to hear from you if you plan to attend so that we can plan for the masses expected.  If you cannot make it June 5 but are interested in participating in the process, then please share those intentions with us as well.  We need all the help that we can garner to tackle the various aspects of fundraising for the school.

This initial meeting is scheduled to take place at the home of Melissa Torgovitsky, 4712 Asbury Place NW, on Thursday, June 5 at 7:30pm.  We look forward to a productive and energized conversation.

Lost And Found To Be Emptied Thursday 6/12

All unclaimed items in the Lost and Found will be donated to local charities on Thursday, June 12 at 12:15pm sharp.  Please stop by in the next week to check for items belonging to your child(ren).

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.  The Lost and Found Committee:
Sally Juram (202-686-5302 or philsal@verizon.net), Lisa Jacobson (202-363-4127), Lucy Smiles (lucysmiles99@yahoo.com), and School Counselor Ms. Leventhal

Dance at the Disco

Dust off the mirrored ball and the polyester suit, it's time to boogie-oogie-oogie at the Dance at the Disco, sponsored by the student council, Friday, June 6, 6-9 pm, at Studio 4130 (a.k.a. the Janney gym).

Come dressed in '70s duds, eat food from the era, and enjoy great disco music. The entrance fee is "all the dimes you can carry;" proceeds go to the Save Darfur effort. All ages are welcome. Imagine - Dimes for Darfur and Dancing at the Disco - better than a Time-Life music collection! See you there.

Darfur Bakesale

Thank you for supporting the petition to President Bush last week. We collected 250 signatures! We have one last opportunity to help the people of Darfur before the school year is over: a bake sale on Monday, June 9 at 3:15pm outside Janney.

We need donations of baked goods to sell. Please wrap each item individually, except wrap cookies in pairs. Please drop off all baked goods on Monday morning in the Learning Cottage (the demountable on the playground) or your child's classroom.

Please contact Shana Zallman if you have any questions. Thanks again for your support!

Girls' Softball League

The Capital City Little League is looking to start up a softball league for girls ages 7-8, starting in the fall 2008. We are trying to see how much interest there might be before making a final decision.

In addition, the League will be recruiting more girls ages 9-12 to expand its current eight team League.  Currently, there are three Janney girls playing softball in the league; they are on the Cougars.

If your daughter is interested in playing softball, please let John Mitchell know your daughter's interest at the following email address:  jmitchell4400@gmail.com.

DC Youth Orchestra Program Classes, June 23-August 1

While school is out, summer is the perfect time for kids to try playing a musical instrument, or to improve their musical skills.  The District of Columbia Youth Orchestra Program offers evening instrumental music instruction, starting on June 23 and concluding August 1.

Class instruction for wind instruments (recorder, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone), string instruments, (violin, viola, cello, string bass, harp, guitar), and percussion instruments will be offered, as well as ensembles for intermediate level students and above.  Rental instruments are also available from DCYOP for the summer term.

For beginning musicians, one-hour classes will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  These twice-weekly lessons from professional musicians give beginning musicians a chance to advance quickly on their instruments.

Intermediate and advanced students have class twice a week and ensemble rehearsal four times a week.  The classes and ensembles allow students to have fun studying, progressing, and performing with other motivated young musicians.

The classes, ensemble rehearsals, and concerts (July 11 for intermediate and above, August 1 for all levels) will be held in the newly air-conditioned Coolidge High School, just a short 15-minute drive across town (Military Road) from Janney.  A family discount is available when more than one child is enrolled in DCYOP for the term, and scholarships may be requested for students with financial need.

For further information, call DCYOP at 202-723-1612, or register online at: www.dcyop.org.

Principal's picturePrincipal's Letter

June 3, 2008

Dear Janney Community:

A few important dates for the last two weeks...

Wed, June 4 - Awards Ceremony - 2pm in the auditorium
Thurs, June 5 - Ms. Roberts's Celebration - 4pm at St. Columba's
Fri, June 6 - Disco in the Gym with Captain Buddy
Mon, June 9 - Staff vs. 6th grade volleyball game - 2pm - Field
Tues, June 10 - PTA meeting - 7:15pm in auditorium
Wed, June 11 -Clap Out- 3pm
Thurs, June 12th - Last day for students - 12:15 dismissal

In case you're new to Janney, you should definitely consider coming to the clap out on the 11th.  The 6th graders start on the 3rd floor and all the students of the school line the halls.  As the promoting class walks by, the students cheer the 6th graders on as they dismiss from school for the last time.  They walk through each hallway and exit out the front doors of the school to rousing cheers.  It's a wonderful tradition and parents who don't even have 6th graders have been moved to tears.  All are welcome, just find a place in the hallway or wait out front for the exit.

Another can't miss event is the celebration for Ms. Roberts on June 5th at St. Columba's at 4:00 p.m.  Ms. Roberts has taught at Janney since 1972.   I've had the pleasure to work with Ermyn for four years and in that time I've never seen her lose her cool or seem lost as to what to do.  Always firm in her convictions, Ms. Roberts has been holding her students and herself to unbelievably high standards with unflagging consistency.  Please come and help us celebrate a remarkable career and all that she has given the school.

Report cards will be sent home on the last day of school.  If your child won't be at school that day, please let their teacher know so that you can get the report card early.  If that's not possible, report cards can be picked up in the school office beginning on June 13th.

Congratulations to all of the kids that performed in the talent show as well as "students in concert".  We have some very talented children but Ms. Miller (talent show) and Ms. Bellissimo (students in concert) deserve some hearty thanks for organizing these wonderful, showcase events.

Have a great week and enjoy the end of the school year!

Sincerely,
