A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

It's been another great year at Janney.

It is with some sadness that we wrap up this particular year and have to say goodbye to many wonderful kids, stellar teachers, dedicated staff, and our much-loved principal. You have all helped make Janney a fabulous school, and you will be missed.

The school gave a terrific send off to Mr. Cartland last Friday. Mr. Cartland was a gift to the Janney community, and we know that the children and parents of Webb-Wheatley will love him and appreciate him as much as we have.

We want to thank Ms. Roberts, Ms. Litvack, Ms. Dedolph, Ms. Murphy, Ms. Cassidy, Ms. Barry, and Ms. Butler for all you have collectively contributed to Janney and to our children's well-being and growth. We wish you the very best!

Hundreds of unnamed staff, teachers, and parents played important roles at school in these last fun-filled days-thanks for being there, stepping up, and helping out. Special thanks go to the parents and staff that organized all the fabulous and fun end of the year events of this last week; Some behind the scenes superstars were Lee Coykendall, Anita Seline, Beth Burchard, Malin Kerwin, and Jennifer Miller. Thank you also to the many teachers and parent volunteers who pulled off the Reading Rodeo! It was a great event and the children had a wonderful time.

Our final PTA meeting of the year is tonight at 7:15 in the all-purpose room. As always, child care will be provided. We will be thanking a great group of parents who have supported Janney throughout the years so come and show your appreciation for all they have done! We will hear a report from the Principal Selection Advisory Committee, which has completed a number of principal interviews. We will also be approving our PTA budget for 2008-2009. We look forward to seeing you there.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

Thanks and have a great week!

Soup Kitchen Thanks

Thank you to all the supporters of the Soup Kitchen this year.

Thank you to the parents, students, and teachers who made lasagna, brought food, snapped beans, drove food, made snacks, and served food. Everything was thoroughly enjoyed! Particular thanks to Jill Palmer for signing up parents to bring food each month and to LaVern Green for organizing teacher participation. The next Soup Kitchen is in September. Thanks, and see you then.

Mentor a New Janney Family

Have you ever felt as if you didn't know the procedures for curbside parking, drop off and/or pick up, especially in inclement weather? Or found there was no school, and you took the kids bright and early?

Did you ever wonder who to ask about PTA activities? Or were you curious about why you didn't know how much fun the school picnics arre?

Well, consider being on the other end of that call! We are looking for interested families willing to volunteer to mentor a new family in the Janney community.

Please contact Linda Tyrance-Strickland at ltstrick2@yahoo.com, (202) 269-6370, or Elaine Pirozzi at Elaine.Pirozzi@gmail.com, (202) 234-5235.

Remember here at Janney,
Each one can teach one, and
Your mentoring can reach one.

Principal's picturePrincipal's Letter

Thank you to everyone for all the kindness and generosity you showed me last week.  I was touched and am humbled by the outpouring of kind words and the number of books that were donated to my new school. It was incredible to see all the kids (and staff members) wearing ties and getting close to 500 sweaty hugs on the playground made my day. Janney truly is an incredible school community, and I'm going to savor these moments for the long road ahead.  I promise to be in touch frequently, and I'm looking forward to working together through the "Collaborative."

I'd like to publicly thank Dan Charles, Sczerina Perot, and Karen Kalat for their service to the school this year. Sczerina and Karen have been incredible PTA Presidents. They consistently worked to build up the community and did an amazing job of staying calm and cool under pressure. Likewise Dan Charles guided the SIT through some difficult discussions around the PPP, a new DCPS budgeting process, and an unforeseen principal search (sorry!). He was always gracious and inclusive. Dan, Sczerina, and Karen went above and beyond to exhibit the "Janney Spirit" that makes this such a nurturing environment for our kids.

Many of you will probably be reading this electronically on Tuesday. If so, please note that report cards (and all the detritus from your child's desk) will be coming home in the backpack on the last day of school along with the Take Home Tuesday Thursday. If your child misses the last day of school, their report card will be left in the school office.

Thanks for all of you who have registered already. Office hours are 8:00-4:30 throughout the summer.

Have a great summer! Make sure the little people are exercising their minds as well as their bodies (lots of noses in books when not at the pool or playing baseball). I'll be in touch and look forward to continuing to work together to improve the educational opportunities for all of our youngsters.

Sincerely,
