A Note from Your Presidents

What an amazing week this was! Hope you were as impressed as we were by the outstanding warm welcome the staff, teachers, and principal gave our kids!

Janney was in the spotlight last week with a visit from Mayor Fenty and Chancellor Rhee on the first day of school. Many parents and kids enjoyed seeing the school shine in the evening news. Here's a brief clip from the Washington City Paper that describes what the Mayor saw and heard about on his trip to Janney. (The whole article is at http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/display.php?id=2426)

1:35 pm Bernard T. Janney Elementary School Tenleytown:

"Students in a fourth-grade class at Janney are reading in a new air-conditioned classroom that sits on the playground. Teachers call the structure a "learning cottage." In layman's terms, it's a prefab double-wide trailer built over the summer to alleviate crowding at the school.

Scott Cartland, the school's principal, says Janney should have about 350 students, but this year there are close to 500.

The newest trailer is one of three behind the three-story brick school. Without it, says Cartland, the school would have had to hold classes in the school's library. Administrators were saved from Plan B, however, just last Friday, when the city gave Janney a certificate of occupancy for the new trailer. It was a feat Cartland doubts would have happened under the old administration.

With the schools more closely under the watch of the mayor, things get done faster than before, he says. "It allows everything to flow much more fluidly."

Janney is one of the richest elementary schools in the city, but students still face overcrowding and less-than-perfect conditions. Of 24 classrooms, 20 have air conditioners, and 10 of those are floor units that do not cool the rooms well, Cartland says. In addition, the only bathrooms - one for boys and one for girls - are on the first floor."

We Janney parents know the hurdles that face Janney, Principal Cartland, and the PTA. We'll need to tackle them together in order to continue to have a terrific neighborhood school. Come to the first PTA meeting, in one week, on Tuesday, September 11, 7:15 pm, at Janney. The PTA meetings are (almost always) held on the second Tuesday of the month. Next week, Principal Cartland will talk about the space crunch, Mrs. Walters will talk about the curriculum, and, of course, we will talk about how we'll raise the necessary funds to support the school.

Here's your homework, parents! Remember to fill out your directory information (the blue card at the front office) and the PTA support form (also called the "All In One Form") atwww.janneyschool.org/school_forms/School_form.htm. If you have done these two things already, thank you very much! Also, we are still looking for chairs for our Hospitality committee, which coordinates refreshments for Janney special events such as Back-to-School Night, Open Houses, and the Winter Concert. If you are looking for a way to contribute this year, we need you!

This Friday is one of our favorite Janney events of the year - the Fall picnic. If you have never been to one, don't miss it! Kids love the extended play with their friends, and parents actually have some time to relax and get to know one another. The potluck food is both abundant and delicious! So come Friday, September 7, 6-8 pm. There's still time to volunteer: just let Leslie Dembinski know if you want to help by emailing her at leslied@mcenearney.com. See you at the picnic!

Janney Fall Picnic Is Friday, September 7!

Plan to attend the annual Janney Fall Picnic! It's fun for the whole family. Hot dogs, chips, and cold drinks will be available for sale. Each family should bring a contribution per the family last name:

A-K - Dessert
L-Z - Salad
Time: 6-8 pm
Location: on the school grounds

We're still in need of volunteers to help set up, grill, cashier, etc. Consider spending an hour helping out. Please contact Leslie Dembinski at 202-365-0903 or email leslied@mcenearney.com.

DC Arts & Humanities Education Collaborative

The Arts Education Initiative is an inclusive program of music, visual arts, theater, dance, and literary arts. The DC Collaborative Arts Education Initiative will support two parallel approaches for learning about arts education in DC public schools: first, a sequential arts curriculum accessible to all students; and second, opportunities to teach and assess other content areas with an arts-integrated curriculum. These approaches will be supported by the rich cultural resources of the DC-metro area.

Four Janney teachers are participating in the 2007-2008 Arts Education Initiative (AEI) partnership with the DC Arts and Humanities Collaborative for the 2007-2008 school year. There will be a short presentation about this program at the first PTA meeting on Tuesday, September 11.

Back to School Lice Check

After each long school break, the Janney PTA Health Committee checks every student in the school for head lice. The Lice Team will meet this week on Wednesday and Friday mornings at 8:45 am in the nurse's office to go into action. Please come join us. Our school nurse, Roslyn Polk, will provide training and support. The more volunteers we have, the quicker the job is done. Questions? Contact Dianne Torresen at torresen@comcast.net or 202-244-3718.

New Office
As many of you may know, my former office is now powering the building! There is no other way that I would have left my first floor address, but I am still in the building and located on the third floor across from the entrance to the cybrary. I am still unpacking and getting settled but please feel free to drop in to see where I am. I can also be contacted via email at maureen.leventhal@dc.gov or by telephone at 202-282-1243.
Both those are new addresses, but I can also always be contacted via the main office at 202-282-0110. Looking forward to an exciting and successful 2007-08 School Year!

Attendance and Tardiness
As part of my responsibilities at the school, I monitor attendance and tardiness. As a reminder, school starts at 8:45 am and students are considered tardy when they arrive after 8:50 am. Students are not marked tardy if they have a medical or dental appointment that prevents them from coming to school on time. School ends at 3:15 pm. Students who are not being supervised are not to remain in the school building or playground after school.

Parents need to notify the main office at 202-282-0110 if their child is absent. Please call before 9:30 am so your child's absence will not be entered as unexcused. Absences are excused for illness, religious holiday, or a death in the family. If there are absences for other reasons, it must be approved by Mr. Cartland before the absence. If your child is absent due to illness for more than three days in a row, a doctor's note needs to be sent in with your child. Please make every effort to get your child to school on time so that he or she can begin the day with their class.

To the Janney Community:

I hope that everyone enjoyed the long weekend and the beautiful weather. I was happy to find time for lots of outdoor pursuits and am looking forward to another great school year.

This Friday is the annual Fall Picnic from 6-8 pm. For those new to Janney, this is a wonderful chance to make new friends. It's a very casual affair with hot dogs, chips, and drinks for sale. We ask that families whose last names begins with the letters A-K bring a dessert to share and families with last names beginning with L-Z bring a salad. Kids love the freedom that this event offers but we do ask that you keep an eye on the little ones to ensure safe play for all. Thanks to Leslie Dembinski for organizing the event and to the PTA in general for adding so much to our school community.

Today is the first day of delivery for the "Health e-Lunch Kids" program. You can go online at www.healthelunchkids.com and order lunch for your child. The lunches will be delivered directly to the school. We are also still offering the regular DCPS lunches provided by Preferred Meals but are now happy to offer another choice.

This Friday will be the first themed Spirit Day of the year. It's "Fanatic Fan" day. Students can sport a jersey or colors of their favorite athletic team. The first Friday of every month will be a themed Spirit Day and on all other Fridays we will wear our school colors (blue and white).

Have a great week and I'll see you at the picnic.

Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
