A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
Thanks
to those who came out to last week's PTA meeting. We had a nice turnout
to start the year. The PTA meeting kicked off our Sally Foster
campaign, which raises over $7,000 for the school, so stock up on
giftwrap and gifts for the coming year. Don't forget that school
pictures will be taken on Monday, September 24. Thanks go to Carol
Piwowarski and Lisa Wackler for putting that together. Speaking of
committee chairs, many of them couldn't make it to the reception to
thank them last week. We want to make sure to let them know that we
appreciate them for stepping up and offering their time and energy this
year! A week from now is Back-to-School Night. This is where you
can really learn about things like the curriculum and goals in your
child's class, the daily class schedule, and the teacher's expectations
for you and your child this year. Don't miss it! Have a great week!

School Picture Day Is Monday, September 24!
In
today's Take Home Tuesday envelope, parents will find an order form
from Lifetouch Pictures for students' school pictures. There are a
variety of picture packages available, with options for different
sizes, quantities, or backgrounds. An option to buy your child's
classroom photo is also offered.
All children's photos will be taken for the Janney yearbook. However, if you wish to buy your child's school pictures, the order form MUST be completed and turned in to your child's teacher with
payment (checks payable to Lifetouch NSS) no later than the start of
school on Monday, September 24. Extra order forms will be available in
the front office in the PTA cabinet. Please note: The order form can be a bit confusing. Please read the order information carefully before making your selections!
Don't
forget to remind your child to wear colorful clothing and be ready with
his or her best smile! For those children whose pictures don't turn out
(or who are absent on Picture Day), Retake Day is scheduled for
Thursday, December 6.
REMEMBER:
If you want to buy your child's school pictures, they must be ordered
and paid for no later than start-of-school, Monday morning, September
24.
If you have any questions, please contact Carol Piwowarski (202-537-0633) or Lisa Wackler (202-244-3366).

First Soup Kitchen
The
first Soup Kitchen for the year will be Wednesday, September 26. We
need teachers to sign up for snacks, cookies, and salad fixings, and
parents to sign up for lasagnas, lettuce, green beans, bread, and ice
cream. Please use the sign-up sheet in the lobby of the school. Or you
can email Jill Palmer at jill.palmer@ngc.com. We particularly need food for this month!
For
new Janney parents: The Soup Kitchen provides a lasagna dinner once a
month (the 4th Wednesday) for about 80 homeless women downtown. It is
most definitely their favorite meal! If you have any questions or want
more information about the program, call Camille Martone at 362-7555.
Thanks!

In the Neighborhood
Celebrate Citizenship Day with the DC Young Suffragists How do you explain to your fairness-focused youngster what our license plates mean?!
In
2003, several Janney families began a series of workshops and field
trips to teach kids about democracy, voting rights, and DC. The DC
Young Suffragists visited the Capitol, the Women's Suffrage Museum, the
DCVote offices, and Lafayette Park to celebrate our country and help
make our city better. Since then, kids have rallied every year in front
of the White House for equal rights for DC, after visits to Senate
offices, City Council, embassies, Cake Love (hey, it's a successful
local business!), and more, and our kids have consistently wowed
passers-by and journalists alike with their understanding of the issue
and their impassioned pursuit of justice.
We are a nonpartisan
educational organization with a goal that by the time our oldest
original members can vote-in 2012-children in DC will be fully
represented in the House and Senate, just like kids across the country.
Along the way we hope kids will understand that every citizen is
responsible and able to make our community and our country better. With
help from the League of Women Voters, last year we opened a chapter in
California, and now hundreds of children on both coasts are learning
what representation means, how to make a difference in a democracy, and
what we can do to bring equal rights to DC.
How do you join the
fun? Our programs are geared towards elementary school-aged boys and
girls, but all ages are welcome. Join us for our monthly meetings in
the Janney Cybrary on the third Friday of each month, from 3:30-4:45
pm. Email us at youngsuffragists@gmail.com to join our list and receive
all the latest updates. Field trip planning is underway, so send us
your suggestions today! If you'd like to help coordinate programs, let
us know. So many teachable moments happen in this process and we'd like
everyone to share those opportunities!
Friday, September 21, 3:30-4:45 pm Stories of Citizenship, Janney Cybrary Join
us for our first meeting, where we'll read kids' books like "My
Grandmother is a U.S. Senator" and "Mama Went to Jail for the Vote,"
followed by an activity and snack. We'll discuss the New Citizens
Induction Ceremony field trip coming in October. Bring your ideas for
field trips and activities this year!
Tuesday, October 9, 9:30-11:30 am New Citizens Induction Ceremony (Teacher conference day; no school. Sign up for afternoon conferences!) Come
witness this inspiring and beautiful ceremony as new Americans take the
oath of citizenship. RSVP by October 2 to youngsuffragists@gmail.com.
Space is limited!
United States District Court, 6th Floor, Courtroom 20 3rd & Constitution Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20001 Metro Station: Judiciary Square (Red Line) Note: Ceremony begins at 10 am. Doors close at 9:45 am.

Principal's Letter
To the Janney Community:
Thanks
to all the parents who came out on Friday to honor our two custodians.
They were very touched and wanted me to pass on their gratitude to the
PTA and the entire community. It was a great event and a much deserved
tribute to two valued members of our community. Thanks Mr. Adams and
Mr. Hillyer!
Back-to-School Night is next Tuesday, September 25,
from 6:30-8:30 pm. As in recent years, we are dividing up the evening
into sessions for primary grades (PK-2nd) and intermediate grades
(3rd-6th). This allows us to have an extra session for those of you
with multiple kids and it also allows us to fit more comfortably into
the auditorium for the opening. The schedule will be as follows...
For Primary Grades (PK-2nd Grades): * 6:30-6:45 Opening Session in auditorium * 6:50-7:20 Classroom Session I * 7:25-7:55 Classroom Session II
For Intermediate Grades (3rd-6th Grades): * 7:05-7:20 Opening Session in Auditorium * 7:25-7:55 Classroom Session I * 8:00-8:30 Classroom Session II
The
main focus of the evening is to hear from your child's classroom
teacher. Therefore, I try to be as brief as possible when we meet in
the auditorium to allow as much time as possible for the classroom
teachers to give their individual presentations in their rooms.
If you don't know your child's room number, there will be a roster and
schedule for the evening available as you enter the building. The
opening sessions in the auditorium will be identical, so if you are a
parent of children in both primary and intermediate grades, you can
start with the primary session and then transfer over to intermediate.
Special subject teachers (art, PE, music, library, ESL, SPED, math,
reading, counselor, etc.) will all be on hand and available to meet
with parents on the intermediate schedule (7:25-8:30). Please remember
that this is not the time for individual conferences. Finally, please
try to arrange for babysitting as the rooms will all be used and
babysitting will not be made available at the school.
Have a great week and we'll see you at Back-to-School Night!
