A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Just a few things to note this week:

Picture day was yesterday. We hope everyone smiled pretty; but don't worry if you missed it, there's another chance to get a cute photo taken on December 6th.

Please come to the auction kick-off meeting hosted by our wonderful auction committee chairs, Melissa Torgovitsky and Anita Seline, this Friday at 9:00. There'll be donuts and coffee and plenty of opportunities to volunteer. Whatever amount of time you have to give-20 minutes, 2 hours, 20 hours-there's a job for you!

If you haven't had a chance to check out the field yet this year, take a look. It's an example of your PTA dollars at work. It was resodded this summer in time for opening day.

Back to School night is tonight. See you there!

Coffee Kick-off for Janney Auction 2008

The date has been set, Saturday, February 2, 2008, the venue has been chosen, The Katzen Arts Center at the American University, and we even have a theme. Now, we need you and all the wonderful donations that so many of you offer and secure year after year for the Janney Auction.
You want to get involved, you know you do! Find out more about the auction and how you can contribute by stopping by the multipurpose room after morning drop off this Friday, September 28th. You will get a chance to meet some of the auction team, ask questions, find out how you can be a part of this event, pick up donation forms, sign up for one of the committees, and have some coffee, breakfast treats and great conversation.

If you have questions or cannot wait until Friday to volunteer, please contact either of the auction co-chairs, Anita Seline at
amseline@aol.comor Melissa Torgovitsky at
storgovitsky@aol.com. We would love to have your help, and all are welcome to contribute to the success of this event. Please understand that an amazing amount of volunteer time is required to create the auction; so any amount of time you can offer, be it a few hours or a hundred hours, will be welcomed.
Check out Sally Foster Gift Wrap on Back to School Night

A BIG THANKS to all of the families who have supported Janney by purchasing (and cajoling their friends and families to purchase) beautiful Sally Foster gift wrap, candy, lotions, cards, gifts and other fine products. Janney earns 50% on every purchase so every order, big or small, will help our school. Feel free to pick up extra catalogs (you can take it to work!) at the school office. Bring in your orders by Wednesday, October 3rd, to the Sally Foster box in the school office. If your family's order is more than $200, we will provide free delivery to your home.

Please stop by the Sally Foster display on Back to School Night to sample their delicious candy, and check out many other new Sally Foster designs and products. You can also sign up to volunteer (tabulating, unloading, assisting order pick-ups or home deliveries). We appreciate any help you can give.

Remember that your far-flung relatives can also order directly at the Sally Foster website (www.sallyfoster.com) and designate 50% of the purchase to support Janney. Our code number is 499219 (but you can also look up Janney on the website if you forget).  The on-line store is open 24/7 year-round, you get UPS delivery straight to your door, and there is no delivery charge for orders of $60 or more.  Just click "GIVE CREDIT" to designate Janney.  There is a link to the Sally Foster website on Janney's website.

If you have any questions, please contact Linda Strickland (202-445-7460, ltstrick2@yahoo.com) or Linda Weidman (301-380-3865, linda.weidman@marriott.com). We appreciate all of your help. THANKS again for supporting Janney!

Note from the Health Suite

Parents please note that as a part of the school health program, annual health screenings will begin soon. The targeted grades for the 07-08 school year are PK, K, 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th. The dates for the hearing screenings are Thursday, September 27th, Friday, September 28th, and Monday, October 1st. Vision, height, and weight screenings will follow later in the fall.

In addition, all 6th graders will be screened for scoliosis (curvature of the spine). A permission slip will be sent home later for scoliosis screening.

Both the parents and teacher will be notified of any test failures.

Thanks to all for your cooperation.

Roslyn Polk, RN

Join the Janney Yearbook Team

Although the school year has just gotten underway, the Janney Yearbook team has already started thinking about how we will document all the fun and memorable things that will happen at Janney this year, and we need your help! First, we need a Yearbook Representative for each classroom, who will be responsible for taking and/or gathering photos for each classroom and creating a collage for its yearbook page. Second, we need you to send us photos you take throughout the year at Janney events. Any good photos from the Fall Picnic or Fanatic Fan Day out there? Send them to us! If you would like to help with the yearbook this year, please contact Karen Garman at (202) 966-9172 or karenandbob1@netzero.com; or Elizabeth Levenson at (202) 537-1941 or elizabeth_levenson@yahoo.com
Math Really Counts!

For three years Janney Elementary has sponsored a challenge math club for fifth- and sixth-graders. We participate in a series of problem-solving experiences that have been created by MathCounts, a nonprofit foundation. The foundation is sponsored by professional organizations such the National Society of Professional Engineers and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and by corporations such as Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and General Motors.  The mission of MathCounts is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. We meet on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 8:40. Dr. Thomas Verghese, who has led this group for the past two years, will do so again this year. I will likewise participate in these sessions. We will begin on October 10. All fifth- and sixth-graders who are interested are invited to participate.

This year we are going to expand our challenge opportunities to second-, third- and fourth-graders. I will lead these sessions. Third- and fourth-graders will meet on Monday mornings from 8:00 to 8:40. We will begin on Monday, October 22. Second-graders will meet on Tuesdays from noon until 12:40. Children will eat in our meeting room. At 12:40 they will go outside for 20 minutes of recess. This group will begin on Tuesday, October 23.  In both cases we will work together to solve challenging problems.

Further grade-specific details will come to you in a letter in Take-Home Tuesday packets.

Dr. Karen Langford

Don't Buy Books! YET.

Come to the Janney Book Fair at Politics & Prose, all day Saturday, October 27th, and Sunday, October 28th. Twenty percent of all Janney sales go directly to the school. Please volunteer to help staff the book fair! Contact Emily Bazelon at emily.bazelon@slate.com or 202.244.5626.

Janney String Ensemble

It's not too late to join the Janney String Ensemble! Rehearsals will be before school this year.  We will have several performances. If your child missed the audition but would like to participate in the string ensemble, please contact swetherbee@gmail.com.

Room Parent Roundup

Things are happening at Janney, and an important component of all things running smoothly is to have room parents in place for each of the classes. I have heard from only a few classes with the names of those who will serve as room parents. I need to hear from the rest of the classes and need to have the name of the lead room parent as well as a class treasurer for each class. As of September 20th, I had heard from the following classes: Ms. Waters, Ms. Rutledge, Ms. Butler, Ms. Miller, Ms. Zallman, and Ms. Carpousis.

Being a room parent is a great way to spend time with your child, to get to know your child's classmates, to support your child's teacher with classroom activities, parties, trips and other projects or events, and to support the strong sense of community that we have at Janney.  The most important thing to remember about room parenting is to delegate. The primary responsibility of the room parents is to try to get all parents involved in the class activities and events because there are too many activities and events for the room parents to handle alone. Also, even if you are not named as a room parent, there are still plenty of ways to help your child's class (for example, class photographer, yearbook page coordinator, host for the class social) as well as tasks that would ease the burden on our wonderful teachers. We need to work together to continue to foster the amazing sense of community that is Janney.

If lead room parents have been named, please send me the contact information for room parents in your class, as well the individual designated as class treasurer, as soon as possible.  I can be reached via email at storgovitsky@aol.com or by phone at 364.3035. Once I have the names for all classes, I will send out the Room Parent Guidelines and the schedule for the year's events. I will also distribute class fund checks to each of the classroom treasurers.

I look forward to working with out you and keeping you apprised of happenings throughout the school year. As always, I welcome your feedback and suggestions as to how we can continue to make room parenting a vital part of Janney's awesome community!
Notebusters

Will begin again. This time with a new director, Mariano Vales! Grades 2 through 6 will practice on Tuesdays as usual right after school until 4:00 in the auditorium. Ks and 1s will practice on THURSDAY this year right after school until 3:45 in the auditorium. Sessions begin the first week in October with a show planned for the first week in December. Enrollment forms may be picked up at the school office.

Our new director, Mariano Vales, is the director of the Junior Philharmonic Orchestra within the DC Youth Orchestra. He also directs the Washington Sangerbund choral group. He is commissioned to write a musical comedy to be completed in 2009 and is doing lots of other things. He is very talented and works wonderfully with children. He is enthusiastic about beginning a new Notebuster season.
Writing Portfolios

I have Writing Portfolios for the students listed who have left Janney. If you have contact with a family and would be willing to pass the student's work on, I would appreciate it. E-mail me at murphyreads@yahoo.com or drop a note in my box, and I will send it home with your child. I would love this great work to get to its owner.

The Children's Art Studio, Washington, DC
The Children's Art Studio is founded on the belief that children reap tremendous emotional and intellectual benefits from making art. The organization is committed to offering outstanding visual art classes to children throughout the city. Small class size, high quality materials and thoughtful instruction characterize the experience. Ninety minute sessions give students the opportunity to relax into completing in-depth projects. The Children's Art Studio is a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

The following short workshops are being held in October at the Wesley United Methodist Church on Connecticut Avenue. The cost is $120. All materials are included.

Principal's picturePrincipal's Letter

Dear Janney Community,

As a reminder, tonight is Back-to-School Night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. As in recent years, we are dividing up the evening into sessions for primary grades (Pk-2nd) and intermediate grades (3rd-6th). This allows us to have an extra session for those of you with multiple kids, and it also allows us to fit more comfortably into the auditorium for the opening. The schedule will be as follows:

For Primary Grades (PK-2nd Grades):

6:30-6:45        Opening Session in auditorium

6:50-7:20        Classroom Session I

7:25-7:55        Classroom Session II

For Intermediate Grades (3rd-6th Grades):

7:05-7:20        Opening Session in Auditorium

7:25-7:55        Classroom Session I

8:00-8:30        Classroom Session II

See you tonight!

On Thursday, there will be an orientation for parents who wish to work in the Janney library.  The meeting will be from 9-11 a.m. and will cover all of the basics on how to shelve books, handle the check-out process, be a class reader, etc. All are welcome!

Last Thursday, our primary teachers had a wonderful professional development opportunity.  Matt Glover, a principal from Ohio led a one day seminar on the writing process focusing on our youngest authors.  The basis for the seminar was a great book by Katie Wood Ray called About the Authors.  One of the many reasons that our teaching staff is so incredible is their willing engagement in numerous hours of professional development throughout the year.  The staff meets weekly by grade levels to plan and work together, as well as in groups around different content areas.  We offer staff development from our reading and math coaches (Barbara Murphy and Karen Langford) and work with a literacy consultant five or six days a year.  In addition, we have teachers that are engaged in graduate level coursework, work to complete National Board Certification, work with arts integration, and a number of other outside providers. It's a real pleasure to work with such a committed group of educators.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
