Sally Foster Orders Due Tomorrow, October 3
If
you had one of those handy doorknob reminder pads from Sally Foster,
remembering would be a cinch! (The trouble is carrying that door
around...) For those of you who have not turned in your orders yet,
take another look through the catalog for these and other beautiful and
useful Sally Foster items: giftwrap, candy, lotions, cards, and gifts.
Janney earns 50% on every purchase, so every order, big or small, will
help our school. Bring in your orders by tomorrow, Wednesday, October
3, to the Sally Foster box in the school office. Orders will be
available for pick-up on Friday, October 26. If your family's order is
more than $200, we will provide free delivery to your home. It's a
beautiful way to help support our children's education.
You can also order at the Sally Foster website (www.sallyfoster.com)
and designate 50% of the purchase to support Janney. (Our code number
is 499219, but you can also look up "Janney" if you forget). The online
store is open 24/7 year-round, you get UPS delivery straight to your
door, and there is no delivery charge for orders of $60 or more. Just
click "GIVE CREDIT" to designate Janney. This is a great option for
out-of-town relatives. There is a link to the Sally Foster website on
Janney's website.
If you have any questions or can volunteer to tabulate or distribute orders, please contact Linda Strickland (202-445-7460, ltstrick2@yahoo.com) or Linda Weidman (301-380-3865, linda.weidman@marriott.com). We appreciate all of your help. Thanks again for supporting Janney!

filling up fast. Students are invited to share their special collection
at school in the display case in the main lobby. Sign up for your week

to include a sign in your display so that we know whose collection it
is. -Cathy Sledz

Mad Science
The
last day to register for the fall session of Mad Science is tomorrow,
Wednesday, October 3. If you are interested in registering but have not
yet done so, you can register online at www.scienceafterschool.com. We have received enough registrants to fill at least two classes, so students will be grouped by age. Daisy Girl Scout Troop
Attention
kindergarten and first-grade parents: Are you interested in getting
your daughter involved in Girl Scouts? Would you be interested in
learning about a new Daisy Girl Scout troop forming at Janney? If so,
please join us for an organizational meeting Wednesday, October 3, in
the Janney School library at 6:45 pm. Janney has a long history of Girl
Scout troops, and there seems to be sufficient interest in starting a
new troop of five- and six-year-olds. Please join us to learn about the
great things that Girl Scouting has to offer for your daughter and to
find out what it takes to be involved. Questions? Please contact Anita
Seline at amseline@aol.com or 237-5505 or Vernon Holleman at Vernon@Hollemanco.com or 237-9840.

"Magpie" Comes to Janney
Who
or what is Magpie? Magpie is a wonderful musical duo, Greg Artzner and
Terry Leonino, who will perform their program called "Living Planet," a
collection of songs about Mother Earth and her creatures. Magpie will
perform on Friday, October 5, at 9 am for the kindergarten, first, and
second grade, and again at 10 am for the third through sixth grade.
Come sing, clap, and have a great time with us. This experience is
sponsored by the DC Collaborative Arts Integration Team at Janney
Elementary School.

Don't Buy Books-Yet
Come
to the Janney Book Fair at Politics & Prose, all day Saturday,
October 27, and Sunday, October 28. Twenty percent of all Janney sales
go directly to the school. Please volunteer to help staff the book
fair! Contact Emily Bazelon at emily.bazelon@slate.com or 202-244-5626.

take advantage of a nutritious and healthy lunch program. You select
from a variety of options online at HealthELunchkids.com,
and the lunch is delivered to your child's classroom. This is a

to all the parents and classrooms for all the food and cards that you
donated for the Soup Kitchen. It was thoroughly enjoyed by over 70
women! The Soup Kitchen will continue to be the fourth Wednesday of
each month. Please remember to bring your donations in by 12 noon on
that Wednesday. We still need many more people to sign up for food
donations. If you are able to help, please sign up on the board in the
main hallway outside the multipurpose room. Remember, you will be
contacted ahead of time to remind you what to bring. If you have any
questions, call Camille Martone at 362-7555. Thanks so much!

Principal's Letter
To the Janney Community:
Thanks
to all who came out for Back-to-School Night, we had a great turnout.
Many thanks to Kate Laguarda for stepping in at the last minute to
provide refreshments.
Parent-Teacher conferences are a week from
today (October 9) and sign-up sheets can be found in the main hall of
the school. Conference day follows a long weekend so I know that some
families might go out of town for a long weekend and thus may need to
schedule a conference for another day. Although we are happy to
schedule conferences on alternate days as needed, it can be difficult
to do this for large numbers of children. As much as possible, please
try to schedule a conference for the 9th. If there are other
circumstances that make this impossible, please be patient with the
classroom teachers as they may need to stretch the remaining
conferences across a few weeks to meet the demand.
The
demolition of the Tenley Library has begun. The company doing the work
has been in contact with me several times and has assured me that the
demolition will be handled safely and with as little disruption to the
school as possible. They are coordinating the destruction of the
tallest part of the building with me so that the field will not be in
use but at other times the kids will no doubt watch as they take it
down. The biggest issue will be the noise and the dust generated and we
will keep the kids off the field if it seems that the dust is becoming
an issue.
This Friday is our second Spirit Day of the year. It
is "Bring Your Bling Day." Obviously we prefer costume jewelry over the
real thing! ☺
Have a great week!
