A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
Dear
Janney Community,
Hope
everyone enjoyed their mini Fall Break! We hope you can join us for
the PTA meeting on Oct. 16th at 7:15 in the all-purpose room. There
is babysitting available. The auction is on the agenda so if you
didn't make it to the auction kickoff on Sept. 27th, this is your
chance to get involved and see how you can help with this huge
undertaking. PTA business will be preceded by a short informational
meeting for room parents at 7:00 also in the all-purpose room.
If
it's your child's birthday month make sure to check out the bulletin
board between the bathroom doors on the first floor hallway. Thanks
go to Kuniko Davidson and Cathy Sledz for putting that together every
month.
Hope
to see you there,

Notes
from the Health Suite:
Quick
reminders:
The
health suite is open during school hours and is located on the
second floor near the music room.
Any
medication that your child needs at school, both prescription
(inhalers, antibiotics, etc.) and non- prescription (Tylenol,
Benadryl, etc.), must be brought to the health suite by an adult.
Each medication must be in the original new packaging or pharmacy
container with the student's name clearly labeled.
All
medications must include a medication consent order that has been
completed by your child's physician and parent/legal guardian
(this includes non-prescription medications).
Please
do not send any medication in a child's backpack or lunch bag for
your child to take unsupervised. This is a danger to all students
and is against our school policy.
If
you would like a copy of our medication consent form, please stop by
the health suite.
If
your child has a temperature over 100 degrees, has been vomiting, or
has had diarrhea, please keep them home until they are free from all
symptoms for 24 hours.
If
your child has been diagnosed with a contagious disease (strep
throat, pink eye, etc.) they must stay home until completing the
first 24 hours of antibiotics.
Any
eye discharge, swelling, or possible infection needs to be evaluated
by your child's pediatrician before coming to school.
We
would appreciate a call about any contagious illness so that we can
be on the look out for similar cases in our student population.
Lice
checks have been completed at this time thanks to our lice chair,
Diane Torresen, and
parent volunteers; however, we will continue to follow-up as needed.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO CHECK AT HOME
Health
screenings: Hearing has been completed, Vision, scoliosis, height,
and weight will be scheduled within the next month.
If
you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us
at (202) 282-0063.

Free Tickets to See the Washington Chorus:
The
Washington Chorus will have their annual Veterans' Day concert at the
Kennedy Center on Sunday, November 11th at 3 pm. They will be
performing Haydn's "Mass in Time of War" and Vaughan
Williams' "Dona Nobis Pacem". As they have done in the
past, the chorus is offering FREE tickets to this great event. Each
school can request up to 30 tickets for families and students to
attend. If you and your family are interested in attending, sign up
in the music room or email me at kristenbellissimo@comcast.net.
In
the past, I have never reached the 30 ticket maximum when requesting
seats, so if you would like to reserve tickets for your whole family,
you're more than welcome! First come, first served!

Children's
Chorus of Washington Auditioning for New Choristers:
The
Children's Chorus of Washington (www.childrenschorus.com ) will hold
auditions through October 18th for new members in its Treble Chorus
and its Bel Canto Chorus. CCW comprises three performing ensembles,
and its 170 young singers represent over 100 public and private
schools in the greater Washington, DC area. Over the years, numerous
Janney students have joined the Children's Chorus of Washington.
CCW
gives young singers a wonderful opportunity to study and perform
choral masterpieces of all styles and periods under the direction of
professional musicians and conductors. CCW ensembles have performed
at the Kennedy Center, the Strathmore Music Center and many other
venues, both local and international.
Participation
in CCW is open to girls and boys with unchanged voices, ages 9-16. No
previous experience is necessary, and financial aid is available.
To
schedule an audition or obtain further information, please call the
CCW office at 202-237-1005, or send an e-mail to
ccw@childrenschorus.com.

Principal's Letter
To
the Janney Community:
I
hope that everyone has enjoyed the long weekend and that those of
you who have already participated in parent/teacher conferences found
them to be informative. I know it is hard to have a terribly
substantive conversation in just 15 minutes but this is sufficient
for the majority of our students. In some cases though, there is need
for more conversation and conferences can be scheduled apart from the
already set-aside days. There is also a process used in all DC
Schools, called the "Student Support Team", which can be
employed to develop a specific plan for students that need additional
support. Parents as well as school staff can initiate the SST
process. If you have any questions about the process and whether
this is something that would benefit your child, you are welcome to
contact me or the school's Special Needs Coordinator, Dr. Shellie
Wood.
Janney's
annual Mini-Walk for the Homeless to benefit the Dinner Program for
Homeless Women (aka "The Soup Kitchen") will be held on
Friday, October 26th at 9:30. Please sign and return the
registration form that is included in this week's Take Home Tuesday
envelope. Fannie Mae covers the registration fee for each child and
every registration form is important, so please make sure to sign one
for each of your children. Each child who turns in a registration
form by Thursday, October 18th will receive t-shirt to wear on our
Mini-walk date. Students submitting forms that are turned in after
October 18th, unfortunately will not be eligible for a t-shirt.
Parents are welcome to register and walk with us. The Dinner Program
for Homeless Women will also benefit from every adult registration
fee. Forms are available in the office. Please contact Shana
Zallman (olmeg1@mac.com) if you have any questions.
Have
a great week! Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
