A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
We want to
make it possible for people to attend a nearby 7:00 community meeting to
discuss the draft request for proposals (RFP) for development of
Tenley-Friendship Library/Janney School. The draft was released earlier this
week, and the city is seeking community input on their draft RFP. You can
read the city's draft RFP solicitation on the Janney's website, just click on http://www.janneyschool.org/PTASITPPP/PPP-info.html. The
community meeting, sponsored by ANC 3E, will be held in the Great Hall of St.
Columba's church (42nd and Albemarle,
NW) from 7 pm to 9 pm.
Our PTA
agenda will be brief, but it includes a report from the audit committee
and a report from the auction chairs. The PTA meeting will be followed by
a brief informational meeting for room parents. The PTA meeting will take
place in the Janney multipurpose room.
The Janney
auction would not be the same with out all those fabulous prizes and packages
to bid on! Solicitation for auction items kicks off this week. Look for folks
outside the school after drop off on Thursday. We hope you spend a minute
chatting with our super auction team.
Take a moment to pick up some auction donation forms, and think about
people you know, places you go, and how they might contribute to another great
auction!
Please
note the changed time of the Janney PTA meeting on your calendar: 6:30!
Please try
to attend the community meeting at St. Columba's Church: 7:00!
See you
tonight!

Thanks for Your Salley Foster Orders
Many
thanks to Janney students and families for their Sally Foster orders. Pickup at
school will be on Friday, Oct. 26th, so please mark your calendars. If your
family's order was for $200 or more, we will arrange for delivery to your
home.
If you
missed the order deadline, don't despair. You can still order at www.sallyfoster.com and
designate Janney to receive 50% of your purchase. (Our code is 499219, but you
can also just click "GIVE CREDIT" and look up Janney.) There is no
delivery charge on orders of $60 or more, with UPS delivery straight to your
door. Remind your out-of-town relatives that this is still an option.
Also, if
you can help (even for a little while) with unloading the boxes when they
arrive on Thursday 10/25 after school, or with pickups on Friday 10/26, or with
home delivery of the larger orders, please let us know. Thanks again for
supporting Janney!

and Linda Weidman (301-380-3865, linda.weidman@marriott.com).

Reading Buddies
Think
about committing an hour a week to read with a student or two in our upper
grades. Volunteers in past years have enjoyed establishing relationships
with the students while helping them with comprehension and fluency. This
program has been an effective support for those students. If you are interested
please e-mail Barbara Murphy at murphyreads@yahoo.com
or put a note in her mail box.

Janney
Directories Are Available
By now you
should have received your 2007-2008 Janney Directory, featuring cover
art work by Molly Charles, 6-H. Congratulations, Molly.
We
apologize now for any errors in the directory. With so many pieces of
information and elements to pull together, mistakes do occur. If you see an
error in your printed information in the directory, please contact us by
Thursday, Oct. 18. We will publish a list of corrections and updates in
next week's newsletter. Please contact Dianne Torressen, torresen@comcast.net or
Anita Seline, amseline@aol.com.
You can
still buy an extra copy of this must-have publication for just $10, checks
made payable to the Janney PTA. Extra directories will be sold before and after
school this week. They're handy to keep in the office, the car, or any place
there's a telephone in your house, so consider buying an extra copy. Thank you.

Janney's
Annual Mini-Walk for the Homeless
It's that
time again! Janney is once again participating in the Fannie Mae Walk for the
Homeless program as we hold our own mini-walk on Friday, October 26th, at 9:30
am. Fannie Mae covers the registration cost for all DCPS students, so PLEASE
sign the registration form that came home in last week's Take-Home-Tuesday
envelope for each one of your children.
Every form counts and is very important. The Dinner Program for Homeless
Women (aka "The Soup Kitchen") will receive $5,000 if between 250 and
499 registration forms are turned in. If 500
registration forms are turned in, the Dinner Program for Homeless Women will
receive $10,000! That means we need every single student to have their form
signed and returned, and we also need a bunch of parents to fill out and sign
adult registration forms AND include the adult registration fee of $25 (which
also gets donated to the Soup Kitchen). Extra student and adult registration
forms are available in the office. Please stop by and fill them out if you have
misplaced yours. Questions? Contact Shana Zallman at olmeg1@mac.com. Please reference
"mini-walk" in the subject line.

Matching
Gifts
Did you
make a donation to Janney this year? If you work for a company like the
Washington Post, Fannie Mae, Reuters, Microsoft, Verizon or others, your gift
may be matched by your company. If you are not sure if your company
matches, then I can help you figure it out. In most instances, applying
for a matching gift is really easy! Some companies will even double your
contribution, so it is really worth that little bit of effort. If you indicated
interest in matching gifts on your Student Support Fee form, then I have
probably already been in touch with you by email. If you think your
company might match, please email Julie Schapire at jschapire@yahoo.com

Authors'
Week at JANNEY
As we hope
you already know, this year's Janney Book Fair will be held the weekend of
October 27-28 at Politics and Prose bookstore. During those two days, Politics
and Prose will donate to Janney 20% of all purchases made by customers that
present a Janney coupon (available at the Book Fair table in the store's
children's department downstairs). There will be in-store events and
opportunities to support Janney's wonderful teachers and librarians. We'll let
you know more as the date gets closer. The Book Fair promises to be a
great event, as it is every year. However, this year we decided to add
something new. And so, it is with great enthusiasm that we announce:
AUTHORS' WEEK AT JANNEY!
During the
week of October 22-26 (the week leading up to the Book Fair), several
children's book authors, including Katy Kelly, Susan Shreve and (Janney's own)
Erica Perl will come to the Janney Cybrary to read and discuss their books with
Janney students. Students and teachers will be provided with a list of the
authors and some of their books, so that they may seek out copies at libraries
AND at the Janney Book Fair. Some of these authors will also be visiting
the Janney Book Fair, so students may even be able to get their books
personally signed.
If you'd
like to help out with the Book Fair or Authors' Week, please contact Emily
Bazelon (emily.bazelon@slate.com) or the Janney librarians.
AND
REMEMBER, OCTOBER 27-28 IS THE JANNEY BOOK FAIR, SO . . .
DON'T BUY
BOOKS YET!

Auction
Donation Kick-Off Week!
The
planning for Janney Auction 2008 is already well underway, so it's time to kick
off one of the key elements of this critical fundraiser: donations!!! Each
year, in addition to coming and bidding on the night of the auction, Janney
families help out by bringing in most of the fabulous donations for the event.
Donations to this year's auction are due by December 5th, which will be here
before we know it, so now is a great time to be thinking about what you want to
donate.
Join us
this Thursday morning, October 18th, for coffee, doughnuts, and donor forms! We'll
be out front before, during, and after morning drop-off, so stop by and say hi,
ask questions, or get ahead of the game and fill out a donor form. Also, please
check your child's Take-Home-Tuesday packet for more information and ideas
about auction donations, as well as a copy of this year's donor form
(additional copies are available in the front office and on the Janney
website). Many thanks for helping out with this great event!
Want to be
a part of the auction solicitations team? Send us an email and we'll put you to
work!

Janney
Open House
The
first open house for this school year (for prospective parents) is scheduled
for Friday, November 9, at 9:15 a.m. Current parents who haven't yet had a
chance to tour the school are also welcome.
If you have friends or neighbors who might be planning to send their kids to
Janney, please tell them about the open house. Word of mouth is our second most
important form of advertising!
We need parent volunteers to help support the students who lead the tours
through the school. (You don't need to be an expert or officially represent the
school; you simply need to help the students and share your own perspective).
If you are free on Friday, November 9, from 9:00 to 10:30, and are able to help
out, please contact Sharon Masling at spm32@law.georgetown.edu or 364-6347 or
Lori Ashford at lsashford@msn.com or 364-4353. |
Counselor's Corner
Theme of
the Month: Caring Our Pre-K
and kindergarten students have decorated leaves with messages of caring for our
"Caring Tree" on the first floor. They have also learned about caring
through listening to Shel Silverstein's classic, "The Giving Tree."
Later this month and in early November all our students will be asked to show
caring by participating in Trick or Treat for UNICEF and in our walk for the homeless.
Welcome
Back Volunteers This
month, we welcome back our OASIS tutors and students from Stone Ridge. OASIS,
an intergenerational reading tutoring program, is beginning its twelfth year
working at Janney. Many of our tutors
from last year are returning as well as several new tutors joining us. Stone Ridge
School of the Sacred
Heart has a community service component to their high school curriculum, and
they have been sending students to Janney for the last eight years. The
students will be working with Mrs. Langford and Mrs. Murphy to provide
additional support in for students in reading and math. We also welcome back
Mr. Thomas Verghese, a former Janney
parent, who has worked with Mrs. Langford on the Math Counts program at Janney
for the last several years. Last but not least, welcome back to our army of
parents who volunteer in the office and cybrary and help to make this a truly
caring school environment!

three-year-old classes. The nursery school is located at Metropolitan
Memorial United
Methodist Church,
at the corner of Nebraska and New Mexico avenues, across the street from American University. Anyone who is interested

DC Young
Suffragists We had a
terrific meeting in September about becoming a US citizen, and an inspiring field
trip last week to the naturalization ceremony. Read the new kids' Guest
Reporter column on our website for more info: youngsuffragists.org.
Thanks to Sofia Laguarda and Mabel Malhotra for our first two lively
installments.
This
Friday! Q&A with Shadow Senator Mike Brown. The DC
Young Suffragists are proud to welcome Shadow Senator (and Janney dad) Mike
Brown to our next monthly meeting! Join us Friday, October 19, from 3:30 to
4:30pm at Janney Elementary School, 4130 Albemarle St., NW, Washington
DC. Shadow Senator Brown will
talk about what a shadow senator does, why DC has them, and how he got the job.
He'll answer kids' questions about the future of democracy in DC and what we
can do to help make it better.
Discussion,
Q&A, and a hands-on activity (create the next license plate slogan for
2012) will be followed by mini reception with cookies and cider. RSVP to
youngsuffragists@gmail.com by Wednesday, October 17 so we make sure we have
plenty of snacks!
Kids'
Research Project, Fri., Nov. 15, 3:30-4:30 pm. The Center
for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) will be
assisting the Young Suffragists in a survey project this winter. CIRCLE
promotes research on the civic and political engagement of American youth and
is part of the University of Maryland's School
of Public Policy. At our
November meeting, their youth coordinator will come to Janney to help the kids
learn how to conduct a successful research project that furthers our mission.
We'll be dividing the kids into two age categories for this effort, and we welcome
our older "graduates" to get involved in the project, too.
Cherry
Blossom Parade, April 12, 2008. We've
received a special invitation to join Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton to march
in the Cherry Blossom Parade. She enjoyed our company for the past several
years in the Palisades July 4th Parade and is
taking us to the big time now! Nationally televised, this presents a special
opportunity to raise awareness around the country about the hard work that the
Young Suffragists have been doing to help bring democracy to the nation's
capital. We're looking for interested
families to help on this project to ensure it is fun for the kids and a success
for our organization. Reply to this email or call Jenny for more info:
202-363-5125.
Join Our
List! Even if
you don't have time right now to make our monthly meetings (held third Fridays
after school at Janney) or some of the field trips, join our email list to
receive all the updates and share the info with friends and family. We need
help! If you are interested in supporting the organization as a parent
facilitator, grant writer, snack donator, media contact, field trip
coordinator, outreacher, or small or big funder, call Jenny at 202-363-5125 or
email us at youngsuffragists@gmail.com Thanks for helping
us help your kids learn how to make democracy work better.

Principal's Letter
Dear Janney Community,
In your
child's "Take Home Tuesday" (THT) packet is a generic media release form.
Please complete this form and send it back to the main office. This form serves
two purposes. The first is it allows us to use photos of your child on our
website. Secondly, there are media events from time to time at the school (such
as the library demolition) and having a form on file allows us to more easily
handle the publicity. If you are not comfortable with signing the form, please
return the form to school with a note (you can simply put a large X through the
form) so that we can respect your wishes and not ask a second time.
Janney's
annual Mini-Walk for the Homeless to benefit the Dinner Program for
Homeless Women (aka "The Soup Kitchen") will be held on Friday,
October 26th at 9:30. Fannie Mae covers the registration fee for each child
and every registration form is important, so please make sure to sign
one for each of your children. Each child who turns in a
registration form by Thursday, October 18th, will receive a T-shirt to
wear on our Mini-walk date. Students submitting forms that are turned in
after October 18th, unfortunately will not be eligible for a T-shirt. Parents
are welcome to register and walk with us. The Dinner Program for Homeless
Women will also benefit from every adult registration fee. Forms are
available in the office and were sent home in last week's THT. Please contact
Shana Zallman (olmeg1@mac.com) if you have any questions.
Please
note that tonight's PTA meeting has been moved up in time so that folks can
also attend the ANC 3E special meeting on the RFP process for the
Public-Private Partnership that will be held at St. Columba's. There is a great
deal of information on the issue already on the Janney wesbsite. Whether pro,
con, or just interested, your attendance and participation at community
meetings such as these is valuable.
Have a
great week! Sincerely,
|
