Thank You, Thank you, Thank You!
...to
everyone who signed a Mini-Walk form for your child(ren) and to all of
you adults who registered and paid the $25 fee. Because of you, the

Our Mini-Walk will be held this

right to walk up Albemarle Street. We will not be crossing any streets.

Janney Book Fair at Politics and Prose This Weekend
This weekend-October 27 and 28-is the Janney Book Fair at Politics and Prose!
During
those two days, Politics and Prose will donate to Janney 20% of all
purchases made by customers who mention Janney or present a Janney
coupon (available at the Book Fair table in the store's children's
department downstairs). Almost all purchases qualify, so think about
getting things for your kids' classrooms AND stocking up on holiday
gifts AND birthday presents AND getting some books for yourself (yes,
it's not just kids books!) AND calendars AND t-shirts AND CD's AND all
that great stuff Politics and Prose carries. It is really a win-win
event: you get to shop for great books for the classrooms and
yourselves AND Janney receives 20% of the store's receipts. So please
stop by the store any time during Saturday or Sunday and stock up! And
please remember, for Janney to get credit for your purchase, you MUST
mention Janney at the register or use a Janney Book Fair coupon.
In addition, there will be fun in-store events on both days: On Saturday, there will be two book readings and signings: Erica Perl at 1 pm ("Ninety-three in My Family" and "Chicken Bedtime Is Really Early") and Katy Kelly at 4 pm (the Lucy Rose books, including hot-off-the-presses Lucy Rose #4!). And on Sunday, Mr. Cartland at 1 pm.
He will be reading his favorite Halloween tales in his Halloween
costume! The store will also have copies of books by our fabulous
Authors' Week authors.
For weeks we've been telling you: "DON'T
BUY BOOKS...YET." Well, the wait is finally over! This weekend, buy
books (and t-shirts and CDs) at Politics and Prose and be sure to
mention Janney at the register! See you there!

This Week Is Authors' Week at Janney
To build excitement about books and this coming weekend's Janney Book Fair, this week has become Authors' Week at Janney!
To
celebrate Authors' Week, the Janney Cybrary will be receiving special
guests all week long. Each day, one or more children's book authors
will be meeting with classes to talk about their books and the process
of writing books. This year's guest authors are: Katy Kelly, Erica
Perl, Susan Shreve, Rhoda Trooboff, and Judith Viorst. Look in this
week's Take Home Tuesday for a list of the Authors' Week authors and
some of their books (and bring this list with you to the Book Fair,
where there will be signed copies of some of the books)!
We hope
Authors' Week will be a great success and will help Janney kids connect
with their favorite books and authors. Ask your children which authors
their classes met with and what they thought about the authors and
their books. If for any reason your child's class was unable to meet
with an author during Authors' Week, check out the Book Fair schedule
(two of the Authors' Week authors will be presenting their books at
Politics and Prose on Saturday). And please attend the Janney Book Fair
at Politic and Prose this weekend!

Yearbook Update
Thank
you to all who have volunteered to be Classroom Yearbook
Representatives! We really appreciate your help! We need just a few
more, for these classrooms:
K-Brudnick 4-Young 4-Etris
Yearbook
representatives take and/or collect photos for their classroom, and
then create a one-page collage for the yearbook. It's creative and
fun-it's impossible to take a bad photo of Janney kids! If you would
like to volunteer for one of the above classrooms, please contact Karen
Garman at karenandbob1@netzero.com or Elizabeth Levenson at elizabeth_levenson@yahoo.com.

Sally Foster Order Pick-Up on Friday
Don't
forget to pick up your Sally Foster order at school this Friday,
October 26, anytime between 8:30 am and 5 pm, in the first floor
hallway. Boxes will be arranged by grade and class. If your family's
order was $200 or more, we will arrange for delivery to your home.
Thus
far Janney has earned over $6,000 from this year's sale, but we are
still short of our target and lagging behind last year's results. We
understand that many families have opted to order online, which is
great. Please don't forget to do it! (We'll be putting up reminders,
just in case.) Just go to www.sallyfoster.com
and designate Janney to receive 50% of your purchase. (Our code is
499219, but you can also click "GIVE CREDIT" and look up Janney if you
forget.) There is no delivery charge on orders of $60 or more, with UPS
delivery straight to your door. Remind your out-of-town friends and
relatives, too. The website is open 24/7, year round.
Also, if
you can help us (even for just a little while) with unloading the boxes
when they arrive on Thursday, October 25, after school, with pick-up on
Friday, October 26, or with home delivery of the larger orders, please
let us know. Thanks again for supporting Janney!

Use an electric typewriter again! Help us get new books into the hands
of our eager readers.

Box Tops Update!
Have
you collected an envelope of Box Tops? Please turn them in now, so that
we can count and sort them in time for this year's first submission
deadline. Remember, neighborhood realtor Susan Jaquet has kindly
offered to match our collection up to $1,000, so each of those Box Tops
is now worth 20 cents! There is a brand new (and huge) collection box
in the front foyer. Please help those of us who count them by trimming
them before submission. Questions? Please email Julie Schapire at jschapire@yahoo.com or Sherry Cohen at jaynsherry@starpower.net.

Janney Directory
Do
you still need an extra copy of the 2007-2008 Janney Directory? They
are available for purchase for just $10. Get one for your car, your
office, and anyplace you have a phone in your house. Leave a check made
out to Janney PTA in the PTA box, attention Anita Seline or Dianne
Torresen, and we'll see that you get a copy.
Also, in today's
Take Home Tuesday, look for a list of directory additions and
correction. Thanks to all for letting us know about these updates to
our school database. During the year, if you move, switch jobs, get a
new phone number or email address, or have any other changes to your
contact information, please inform Mrs. Watkins in the front office so
she can update the school database. Thank you.

Wednesday, November 7, at 7 pm on the GDS lower/middle school campus.

Principal's Letter
To the Janney Community:
I have two important safety topics that I wish to address with the larger community in this week's letter.
The
first issue is that of an increase in antibiotic-resistant staph
infections (MRSA). There is a letter and "fact sheet" from the
Chancellor about the disease itself and the district's response to it.
You can find the fact sheet on our website at http://www.janneyschool.org/Fact%20Sheet.Staph.pdf. I would like to add a few words about the school's response. I've
spoken to our nurse, Ms. Polk, and our PE teacher, Mr. Harvey. The
staff will get an overview of MRSA to ensure that our room environments
don't offer any opportunities for bacteria spreading and to review
hand-washing techniques and other safety measures. With Mr. Harvey, we
won't use the gymnastics mats until we have a better understanding of
what reasonable protections should be in place in terms of wiping them
down. The gymnastics unit isn't in his curriculum until January and
I'll share more information once we have a plan in place. Other than
the PE mats, there isn't any gym equipment that poses significant risk
since we don't have locker rooms, showers, or offer contact sports like
wrestling.
The second issue is that in the past few weeks we
have had a couple of incidents of children finding small objects on the
playground that could have been harmful if mishandled. We are
responding to this by reminding all students that if they find
something on the playground that seems harmful in the least, they are
not to touch it but get immediate adult help. Please reinforce this
conversation with your own child at home. Our security guard, Ms.
Soribe, also patrols the grounds each morning before school and we will
have additional personnel assisting in this task on Monday mornings
since there seems to be increased use of the playground over the
weekend. I could really use your help though. If you are at the
playground and see something that causes concern, please bring it to my
attention, noting the location as specifically as possible. We always
need help keeping our outside areas clean and free of bottles, trash,
and other possibly harmful objects. More adult vigilance will help in
this matter greatly but it is inevitable that our 480+ students, with
their love of digging in the dirt, using the bushes as "hideouts" in
their imaginative play, and their general talents for exploring every
nook and cranny on our playground will still continue to find items
that we'd rather they not discover, which is why teaching them what to
do if they find something hazardous will always remain critical.
Finally,
I would like to remind you that there will be another community meeting
to discuss the soon-to-be released "Request For Proposals" (RFP) for
the proposed "Public-Private Partnership" (PPP) for the Janney School /
Tenley Library lots. This meeting will be in the Janney auditorium
tonight (Tuesday, October 23) at 6:30 pm. Eric Scott in the Office of
Planning is running the meeting.
Have a great week!
