A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Happy Halloween! Thanks to all the room parents and parent volunteers for organizing various Halloween activities in the classrooms tomorrow.

Remember that this Friday, November 2nd is a half day. Dismissal for all students is at 12:15 pm.

We would just like to remind people to RSVP for the "Autumn Evening Epicurean" on November 3rd. Sounds like it will a fun and tasty evening so don't miss it! Eat, drink wine and support the auction at the same time - what could be better? Respond by the end of TODAY to Sherry Cohen at 202-338-1590 or jaynsherry@starpower.net.

A few teachers have mentioned that with the advent of the wonderful new electronic newsletter format the Take Home Tuesday folders aren't getting as much attention as they once did. We just want to mention that there are still important forms, letters and announcements that will come home in hard copy in that folder, so don't forget to look for it each week.

Have a great week!

We Need Your Auction Donations Now!

Auction donation kick-off week is now a distant memory, but we're still waiting for that influx of donations that we count on each year from the Janney community. The annual auction is our school's biggest fundraiser, and it can't be done without your help!

Who should donate? YOU!! Oh, and also your friends, family, neighbors, employer, hair dresser, interior decorator, gardener, house painter, accountant, manicurist, favorite restaurant, dentist, architect, housekeeper. You'll be surprised at how many people are willing to support this worthy cause when you ask!

What should I give? To name just a few ideas -- restaurant certificates, gift baskets, event tickets, spa treatments, wine, hotel stays, board games, sports equipment, theme parties, haircuts... Just remember: the key is for every family to participate by donating what they can to the auction!

How do I donate something to the auction? It's easy! You just need a donor form - they came home in last week's Take Home Tuesday, but they are also available online at (www.janneyschool.org/auction/donorform2008.doc), in the office, and by emailing us. When you've completed your form, turn it in to the front office at Janney.

Want to give, but just don't have the time to think about it? That's what we're here for! Tell us your parameters (budget, general ideas) and we'll make it easy.

Thanks so much for helping to make Janney Auction 2008 a success!!

- Rennie Anderson (rennie.anderson@stanfordalumni.org) and Lucy Smiles (lucysmiles99@yahoo.com)

Janney Book Fair Thanks!

The Janney Book Fair Chairs would like to express their deep appreciation to the entire Janney Community for making this past weekend's Janney Book Fair at Politics and Prose such a terrific success.

In particular, we'd like to thank Janney Cybrarians Pat Brown and Malin Kerwin, plus visiting authors Katy Kelly, Erica Perl, Susan Shreve, Rhoda Trooboff and Judith Viorst for donating their time and talents during the First Annual (we hope!) Janney Authors' Week. We'd also like to thank all of the dedicated Book Fair Volunteers who staffed the table, Kuniko Davidson and Lena Frumin for creating the wonderful posters, coupons and publicity materials, the Janney teachers who compiled and submitted their wish lists and the Janney families who came out - in the rain as well as on the first sunny day in practically a week - to support Janney by shopping for themselves and their school! Special thanks to Scott Cartland and the entertaining and mysterious guest reader on Sunday (who bore a surprising resemblance to our principal. hmmm.).

And of course, thanks to Politics and Prose for giving us 20% of their receipts for a solid weekend once again!

What fun and what a great way to support our school!

Erica Perl, Emily Bazelon and Anjali Chen

Principal's picturePrincipal's Letter

Dear Janney Community,

We had a very successful Mini-Walk for the Homeless last Friday. Many thanks to Ms. Zallman for organizing the event and for all those that registered. The light rain caused us to cut the walk short and also served as a reminder to the kids how fortunate they are to have warm, dry spaces to live and work in.

We will have our annual Halloween Parade this Wednesday at 1:30 pm. If your child wishes to dress up, please send them to school with their costume in a bag. Students will change at 1:00 for the parade. We also discourage overly scary or gruesome costumes for the sake of the primary students. The parade will begin on the soccer field (weather permitting) but then will proceed down to the lower playground, out to the sidewalk on 42nd St., and then up to the front of the school on the sidewalk on Albemarle.

Friday, October 26th, marked the end of the first grading period. Report cards will go home in the Take-Home-Tuesday on November 13th.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
