A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
Thanks to
all the room parents, teachers, and staff who made Halloween such a blast! We
loved seeing the creative costumes (that was another great one,
Principal Cartland!) and the unbridled enthusiasm of the Janney
community.
We have
our next PTA meeting on November 13th. Melissa Kim, the principal at Alice Deal
Middle School, and
some Janney graduates who are current Deal students will talk to
parents about life after Janney. Please come next Tuesday at 7:15 to the
all-purpose room. We find that the more you hear about Deal, especially from
the Deal students themselves, the more enthusiastic you become! Child care will
be provided.
Also mark
your calendar for the Janney Open House on Friday, November 9th. Tell
your friends with young children that this is a great opportunity to check out
our school.
School is closed on November 12th for Veterans'
day.

Janney Open House this Friday
The first open house for this school year (for prospective parents) is
scheduled for this Friday, November 9, at 9:15 am. If you have friends or
neighbors who might be planning to send their kids to Janney, please remind
them about the open house.
We still could use a few more parent volunteers to help support the students
who lead the tours through the school. If you are free this Friday, from
9:00 to 10:30, and are able to help out, please contact Sharon Masling at
spm32@law.georgetown.edu or 364-6347 or Lori Ashford at lsashford@msn.com or
364-4353.

Bake Sale to Benefit Save Darfur
The Janney
Community Service Committee together with a newly formed group, Janney Kids for
Darfur, are organizing a couple of events to
raise awareness and money for the Save Darfur coalition (www.savedarfur.org
). Since the start of the recent crisis (2003), more than 400,000 people
have perished as a result of hunger, disease, and strife, and more than 2.5
million people in the Darfur region of Sudan are now displaced from their
homes and communities. The conflict between herders and farmers was
exacerbated by drought and escalated into extreme tensions over resources,
religion and ethnicity, and politics. A group of students at Janney has
been motivated to raise money to help children especially in Darfur.
So far, they have held three lemonade and cookie sales and requested donations
instead of birthday presents to give to the Save Darfur effort.
On
November 9th, the group will hold a Bake Sale after school in front of Janney
to continue to raise funds. Pat Cassidy, mother-in-law of our own Mrs.
Cassidy, will also speak with 4th through 6th graders about Darfur,
genocide, and human rights in general.
December
14th will be Darfur Day at Janney. More information will be available in
the next few weeks.
If you or your children are interested in
helping with these events, please contact: Shana Zallman (olmeg1@mac.com), Meredith Dedolph (meredithemrich@yahoo.com), Barbara Murphy (murphyreads@yahoo.com), or Lora Iannotti (L.Iannotti@cgiar.org).

Update
Just
one month left to turn in your donor forms for the upcoming Carnevale Janney
Auction 2008 which will be held February 2. Yes, we know it's a little earlier
than last year's auction so that's why we're asking for donor forms now. Please
let us know what you'll be giving to the auction. The deadline to
turn in donor forms, available at www.janneyschool.org, is Dec. 5. Forms may be turned
in to the auction box in the school office. Thank you for supporting our
school. Beat the holiday rush. Do it today. Thank you.

SIT Notes
This is
the first of what we plan to make a brief regular monthly feature in the
newsletter. The goal of SIT Notes is to keep the Janney community informed
about what the School Improvement Team is doing or at least discussing.
The SIT
normally meets on the third Tuesday of each month, at 6 pm, in the Janney
library. The meetings are open for members of the public or the Janney
community to observe.
Last
week's meeting was dominated by discussion of the future-specifically, potential
paths toward modernization of our school building. As most of you know, Janney
is supposed to be expanded, in the future, as part of a comprehensive
modernization of DCPS facilities. The DC government also expects, perhaps
very soon, to solicit proposals for a mixed-use development of the entire
library-school site. SIT members talked about many risks and uncertainties
associated with both possibilities. We came to no firm conclusions, but we
are going to see if we can meet with Allen Lew, who is in charge of modernizing
DC school facilities, to gain more clarity.
With any
luck, in future meetings we'll be able to spend more time talking about the
operation of our school right now!

Picture
Retake Day
By now,
you should have received your children's pictures in their backpacks
(provided that Lifetouch actually took some of your child on September 24th).
You have
had some time to contemplate your child's photographs. And maybe, just maybe,
you don't like them. If this is the case, mark Thursday, December 6th, on your
calendar for Picture Retake Day!
If you
would like your child's picture taken that day, all you have to do is call Lisa
Wackler (202.244.3366), and we will have Lifetouch retake the picture the
morning of the 6th. If you are having your picture retaken, you must return
your unsatisfactory package (minus the class picture) to the photographer on
retake day.
If you
have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact us! Thanks!

Deal PTA
Parent Education Workshop
Thursday, November 15, 6:00 - 8:30 pm
Title: So Your Kid's Online...OMG!
Presenters: Andrew Ship, M.Ed., M.S.W., and Julie Baron, M.S.W., LCSW-C
Description:
Participants will better understand how technology is used in kid culture
today, what the pitfalls are, how social networking websites work, what are the
impacts of cyber-bullying, and what parents can do to address these complex
issues with their kids to keep them safe and healthy. Current research and
trends are discussed. This promises to be an informative and empowering
presentation for parents to understand and intervene appropriately in the
virtual lives of their children and adolescents.
First
Touch Soccer First
Touch Soccer will conduct winter outdoor clinics from 2:30 to 4:00 pm on
Saturdays and Sundays at the Palisades turf field
from December 2007 until March 23, 2008. Check out the details
at: www.FirstTouchSoccer.org. Except
for the U.S., virtually every professional league around the world plays
outdoors in the winter in much harsher temperatures then we have here in
Washington D.C. Based on the last 30 years of Washington DC weather data,
average daily high temperature in December is 47F (9C), 43F (6C) in January,
47F (9C) in February, and 58F (15C) degrees in March. Why play indoors when you
can play outdoors? This is a great opportunity to continue skill
development, game conditioning and developing the most important of all touches,
the FIRST TOUCH, in small-sided and game conditions.

Principal's Letter
Dear Janney Community,
I hope everyone
had a "spooktacular" Halloween. It's always great seeing the kids romping
around in costume. Many thanks to all the room parents that helped organize the
chaos into games, read-alouds, and art projects.
This
Friday is one of our two Open Houses from 9:15-11:00. Please pass the word
along to neighbors and friends who may wish to visit the school. Although the
Open House is primarily designed for prospective parents, it's also a good
chance for current parents to observe their child's classroom or to go on the
tour. The Open House coordinators, Lori Ashford and Sharon Masling, are also
still looking for some volunteers to lead some of the tours. The time
commitment for this is 9:15-10:30. Please contact Lori, Sharon, or myself to
get more details if you are interested and willing.
Janney
purchased three interactive smart-boards this summer. The smart boards are
located in the library, Ms. Osterman's room, and Ms. Zallman's room. They look
like ordinary white boards with an LCD projector attached. The boards connect
to a computer with special software and allow the writing on the board to be
manipulated and saved like files on a computer. There is also a growing amount
of education software being developed that allows for some very engaging and
interactive instruction. The staff is being trained on how to use the boards
and take advantage of their numerous applications. We started with only three
because of the expense (they're almost $6,000 each) but will beginning adding
more if they prove effective.
I am
pleased to announce that I have finally found a Spanish teacher, actually two
Spanish teachers to be more precise. Sra. Cortes and Sra. Garcia will be
sharing the position. They are both native Spanish speakers (from Honduras and Mexico respectively), have
experience teaching Spanish to young children, and came highly recommended by
current Janney families. I appreciate everyone's patience through this process.
Sra. Cortes will begin her classes on Monday of next week and Sra. Garcia will
start the first week of December.
This is
the time of year where we start to see lots of clothes in our lost and found.
It's cold in the morning but warm by recess time so often the jackets come off
and get left behind. You can help us by writing your child's name in permanent
marker inside their coat and also by stopping by the lost and found in the main
hall from time to time.
Have a great week! Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
