A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! We
want to say a HUGE thank you to Lori Ashford, Sharon Masling, Kate
LaGuarda, and all the students, parents, and staff who made Friday's
Open House a success. You helped show others what a terrifically
welcoming community this is! Please don't forget there's a PTA meeting tonight at 7:15 in the multipurpose room. Babysitting is available. If
you only come to one PTA meeting a year, this is the one to come to!
Melissa Kim, the principal at Alice Deal, and some Janney graduates who
attend Deal will be speaking about their middle school experience. Over
70% of Janney students remain in public school after Janney. Don't miss
out on the opportunity to learn more about Janney students' experience
in our neighborhood middle school! Even if you have very young kids,
like us, we know you are thinking about where your kids might be in 6th
grade. Satisfy your curiosity about the future! The more you learn
about Alice Deal, the more likely you are to be excited about it for
your kids. Have a great week,

Lost and Found to Be Cleared Next Week
Please
stop by the Lost and Found in the first floor hallway when you can, to
see if there are any things your child may be missing. There are many
sweatshirts and jackets, but also lunch boxes, pants, hats, parts of
Halloween costumes, and other items.
***All unclaimed items will be donated to local charities over the Thanksgiving break.***

Coffee and Donor Forms for Breakfast!
The
donation deadline is rapidly approaching, and we want to make it as
easy as possible for you to support the Auction. All we need right now
are your donor forms, which tell us what you plan to give! So please
stop by for coffee and doughnuts during drop-off on Friday, November
16, to turn in your completed donor forms. Have questions? Need ideas?
We'll have plenty of blank forms and auction gurus to help you out!

Kudos to Open House Guides and Volunteers
Many thanks to all those who particiated in the Open House last Friday.
We had about 24 students leading 12 tour groups throughout the school.
If your child was a guide, give them a hearty congratulations! They
played their roles beautifully and made their school look good.
Thanks
also go to the parents and Janney staff members who helped with the
tours (some graciously responding at the last minute): Dianne Bock, Ann
Beumel, Randy Colaizzi, Dyana Forester, Elizabeth Levenson, Maureen
Leventhal, Camille Martone, Sczerina Perot, Lucy Smiles, and Melissa
Torgovitsky. Kate LaGuarda did double duty, helping a tour group and
putting out a gorgeous spread of refreshments. Wow-it takes a village!
The next (and last) Open House will take place during the Pre-K lottery period, on Friday, February 8.

Picture Retake Day
By
now, you should have received your children's pictures in their
backpacks (provided that Lifetouch actually took some of your child on
September 24). You have had some time to contemplate your child's
photographs. And maybe, just maybe, you don't like them. If this is the
case, mark Thursday, December 6, on your calendar for Picture Retake
Day!
If you would like your child's picture taken that day, all
you have to do is call Lisa Wackler (202-244-3366), and we will have
Lifetouch retake the picture the morning of the 6th. If you are having
your picture retaken, you must return your unsatisfactory package
(minus the class picture) to the photographer on Retake Day.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact us!
Thanks! Lisa Wackler, 202-244-3366 Carol Piwowarski, 202-537-0633

Autumn Evening Epicurean Thank Yous
Autumn
Evening Epicurean, Janney's 2nd Annual Wine Party, was a resounding
success. Special thanks to Larry and Camille Martone who graciously
opened their home to host the party and welcomed many of the Janney
community for a night of fine wines and delectable cuisine. The
evening's wines were perfectly paired with a menu of holiday tastings
that was conceived by Janney's own in-house sommelier, Lisa Kennelly,
who also served as guest speaker for the evening and helped many in
attendance select the perfect pairings for their upcoming holiday
feasts.
A round of applause is due to the many chefs from
Janney's ranks who put forth an amazing array of tastes. There was
everything from Spicy Jicama Salad with Tangerine and Cilantro,
expertly prepared by Jill Cork, a Rustic Onion Tart, courtesy of Jelena
Kecmanovic, to Ginger Squash Cake with White Chocolate Frosting and
Five Spice Apple Quince Pie, prepared by Mary Agnes Carey and Dianne
Torresen, respectively. As the conversation and wine flowed and the
foods were enjoyed, over 50 bottles of wine were donated and will be
offered at the upcoming Carnevale Auction on February 2. A debt of
gratitude goes out to this year's Wine Party Chair, Sherry Cohen, for
again shepherding this wonderful event.

Counselor's Corner
UNICEF Please
send in your UNICEF boxes so that we can get a final total on our
contributions. So far, we have collected $2,616.07, topping what we
collected last year! Thank you to all the students who trick-or-treated
for UNICEF!
Help Needed I
need some help with updating our Emergency Evacuation Bags on Friday,
November 16, from 9-10:30 am, and if it's not completed then, on
Monday, November 19, from 9-10:30 am. If you have the time to help out,
please contact Mrs. Leventhal at 282-1243 or at the main Janney number,
282-0110.
5th and 6th Graders and Parents Don't forget to hear Ms. Kim and students from Deal Middle School talk tonight after the PTA meeting about "Life After Janney"!

DC Young Suffragists
Please
join the DC Young Suffragists for our monthly meeting to be held on
Friday, November 16, at 3:30 pm in the Janney Cybrary. We are excited
to host a guest speaker from the Center for Information and Research on
Civic Engagement (CIRCLE), who will talk to our Young Suffragists about
the research they do on the civic and political engagement of young
people. Better yet, CIRCLE has agreed to help the DC Young
Suffragists come up with their own research project. We will need many
great brains for this brainstorming session, so come for snacks and
lively discussion-and don't forget your thinking caps! Any questions
please email Jenny Smulson or Jane Varner Malhotra at youngsuffragists@gmail.com. Looking forward to seeing old and new faces on Friday, November 16!

In the Neighborhood
"Into the Woods" at Wilson High Come
see the Wilson Players in their production of "Into the Woods"
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 15, 16, and 17, at 7 pm. "Into
the Woods" is a musical based on many of the well-known fairy tales
you've read, such as Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and
Little Red Riding Hood. (Parents with very young children may elect to
leave after the first act as the second act may be a little
frightening.) Many Janney alumni are in the play, and it should be a
fun evening. See you there. If you have questions, call Camille Martone
at 362-7555.

Principal's Letter
To the Janney Community:
Please
check your child's Take Home Tuesday folder today to find your child's
report card. Please keep in mind that at this time in the year it is
understandable to have the majority of subskills identified as "Not
Introduced" or "Beginning" rather than "Developing" or "Secure" due to
the fact that at this time of the year, we haven't fully covered all
the material that is part of the grade level standards. As the year
progresses, you will see more of those subskills moving towards
"Developing" and "Secure." Please also keep in mind that your child's
overall grade in a particular subject reflects other content and
material that isn't covered by the subskills listed on the report card.
DCPS has been working on the report card for the past few years but
it's still a work in progress. If you have questions about the report
card itself or your child's grades, please feel free to ask either
myself or your child's teacher.
Deal Principal Melissa Kim,
along with former Janney students who now attend Deal, will make a
brief presentation tonight at the PTA meeting and then will be
available for questions. This is a great opportunity for parents and
students in the upper grades who would like to learn more about life
after Janney. The PTA meeting will open at 7:15 with this informative
presentation.
Many thanks to Lori Ashford and Sharon Masling for
organizing another successful Open House, to Kate Laguarda for
providing yummy refreshments, and Sczerina Perot for very eloquently
speaking about Janney as a school community. The event was well
attended and everyone was very impressed with our student tour guides.
Have a great week!
