A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
Happy Thanksgiving!
Many parents and students came to an
exciting PTA meeting last week to learn more about Alice Deal Middle
School. It was terrific to hear from the principal, Melissa Kim, and
the many Janney students who both asked and answered questions about
the middle school experience. We were surprised to learn about the
foreign language program at Deal, which includes Chinese (as well as
the traditional French and Spanish). The best part was learning how
much the kids are challenged and how much they love the school!
We want to take this opportunity to say
we're thankful for being part of such a wonderful school community at
Janney. Thanks to all the teachers and staff for all the work they
do! Thanks to all the parents who give of their time and energy to
help Janney be all that it can be! And of course thanks to of all
the kids that inspire us with their endless enthusiasm!
Enjoy your holiday!

Auction news
Support
the Auction by Shopping at Amazon! As the deadline for donations rapidly approaches, we wanted to remind
you of a fast and easy way to support the Janney Auction: go to
http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/3HYRUA78WBJYC (or search
"Janney Auction" under wishlists on amazon.com) and shop
from the Janney Auction Wishlist. This is also a great place to send
your friends and relatives who have expressed an interest in helping
but don't know what to give. Thanks so much for your support! Questions? Email rennie.anderson@stanfordalumni.org or lucysmiles99@yahoo.com
Take Me Out to the Ballgame ... Do
you or your office have season tickets or a luxury box to any venues?
Would you be willing to donate a set of those tickets to the janney
Auction? If so, please fill out a donor form now (available in the
janney office or online at http://www.janneyschool.org/auction.html).
Nationals? Redslins? Mystics? Wizards? DC United? Opera? Symphony?
Theater? Something else? Tickets are always top sellers at the auction,
so this would be a great way to support Janney. Thanks for your support.
Questions? Email rennie.anderson@stanfordalumni.org or lucysmiles99@yahoo.com
Specific
Auction Tasks -- Can Anyone Help? In past years, the Janney auction has
offered to buyers a dessert-of-the-month item. The winning bidder
receives a fabulous dessert once a month from a different Janney
family. We need a coordinator to help corral some volunteers for this
offering, put together a list of desserts and contact information
that can be presented to the winning bidder on the night of the
auction. Interested in this job (it will take a little emailing, a
little organization, and a bit of contact with the community)? Then
agree to be the coordinator of this item.
Similarly,
we want to offer a cookie-of-the-month offering, structured as
described above. If chocolate chips are your passion, if you can't
get enough of lemon bars, then you would be the perfect coordinator
for this sure-to-please item.
Finally, we're looking for a new
designer for auction catalog advertisements. Our past advertising
designer is now heading up the Janney yearbook and our deadlines and
theirs all overlap. So, please, if you have an eye for design and are
competent with a computer, we'd be most happy to hear from you.
Email Anita Seline at amseline@aol.com, or Melissa Torgovitsky at storgovitsky@aol.com if you can step up to any of these jobs. Thanks!

Picture Retake Day at Janney is
Thursday, December 6th!
PLEASE NOTE THERE IS A DEADLINE FOR
SIGNING UP FOR RETAKES!(See below for more details!)
Picture Packages from Lifetouch were
sent home a couple of weeks ago. By now you've had a chance to sit
and contemplate your child's picture. And maybe, just maybe, you're
not blown away by the likeness. (Perhaps you're still trying to
figure out if this is a picture of your child, and not someone
else's!) Does your child look sleepy, bored, or angry? Maybe they're
making their best "Monster Face," which isn't your favorite
look, or they thought they'd surprise you with something new they
tried with their hair during recess. Maybe your child wasn't at
Picture Day because he or she was home with the "virus of the
week." At any rate, mark Thursday, December 6th, on your calendar
for Picture Retake Day!
If you would like your child's picture taken that day, all you have
to do is let Lisa Wackler know (phone number 202.244.3366), and we
will have Lifetouch take the picture the morning of the 6th. PLEASE
NOTE: You must notify Lisa Wackler (phone number 202.244.3366)-not
your child's teacher-- of your intentions for a retake by Friday,
November 30th (We have to give Lifetouch a head count, so they know
how long they will be at the school that day. The company does not
schedule us for a full day as they do for the first picture day). If
you are having your picture retaken, you must return your
unsatisfactory package (minus the class picture) to the photographer
on retake day. (And did we mention that you MUST let Lisa Wackler -
phone number 202.244.3366 - know by November 30th if you're getting
a retake?)
If you have any other questions, don't
hesitate to contact us! Thanks!

Principal's Letter
To the Janney Community:
I am very sad to report that our long time security guard, Ms.
Priscilla Soribe has been transferred by her employer to another
location as part of a different contract with the city government. As
many of you know, Ms. Soribe is a citizen of Nigeria, and although she
is a legal resident alien, there is a provision in the contract with
DCPS that all school security officers must be US citizens. It is
beyond my understanding as to why that's in the contract or why the
security firm decided now (after several years) to ensure compliance
with that provision, but I'm hoping that we can get an exemption and
get Ms. Soribe transferred back to Janney. I'll let folks know the end
result and if there is any advocacy that might help. Stay tuned. In the
meantime, please feel free to introduce yourself to our new security
guard, Ms. Giraya Maxfield, who has been nothing but pleasant and
dependable, and of course not responsible for Ms. Soribe's transfer.
Our food service provider, Ms. Blair, has also been out sick for a
while now and it is not clear when or even if she will return. Her
replacement for now is Ms. Tiffany, who is filling in quite capably. We
have had some students make cards for Ms. Blair and if you would like
your own child to make one, we'd be happy to deliver them to her.
I promised at the beginning of the year that making our science
program at Janney more consistent would be a focus for the staff this
year. I asked each grade level to submit a brief synopsis of the
science topics that were covered in the first quarter. Here's what the
teachers reported...
Pre-K and K- During the 1st advisory in science the students in the
PK/K classes learned about the five senses, the seasons (with a focus
on fall) and the weather.
1st Grade - First grade science begins with learning about
our class pets (mice, hermit crabs, fish)- their requirements for life,
characteristics, and behavior. Then we learn about the earth and sun-
that the earth is made up of land, air and water, and that air takes up
space and it's movement can be felt as wind. We learn that the sun
provides heat and light, and that the rotation of the Earth creates day
and night. Next we will examine up close solid earth material- rocks
in various sizes (pebbles, sand and silt) and learn how the Earth
formed those sizes of rock particles.
2nd Grade - We have all finished the solids and liquids
unit and are working on the air and weather unit. In this unit, we will
identify the basic properties of air and find that it is matter and it
takes up space. We will make and use basic weather tools to gather
information about temperature, rainfall, wind, clouds, and seasons.
3rd Grade - Mrs. Cassidy's class is piloting an astronomy
unit that the other third grades will use later in the year. Her
students are studying the movement of the earth including the cycle of
day and night, the phases of the moon, and learning about the night sky
and the different constellations that appear in different seasons.
Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Walters are implementing four sequential
investigations dealing with observable characteristics of organisms.
Students observe, compare, categorize, and care for a selection of
organisms and in so doing they learn to identify properties of plants
and animals and to sort and group organisms on the basis of observable
properties. Students investigate structures of the organisms and learn
how some of the structures function in growth and survival.
4th Grade - The fourth grade has integrated the Landforms
Science unit with Social Studies this advisory. We learned about
erosion and deposition using the FOSS kit. We also learned about the
geography and climate of the five regions of The United States.
5th Grade - 5th grade recently completed a unit on
variables. Students conducted controlled experiments to determine how
different variables affect results. We have just begun an environments
unit, with a beginning focus on cells and hereditary. We will be
broadening our scope to the relationship between organisms and their
environments and how changes in an environment can be hard on organisms
and, sometimes, even disastrous.
6th Grade - Sixth grade students study Earth and Space
Science using the McDougal Little text as a framework. In the first
quarter, students studied how the earth's surface looks from space
using different types of maps and satellite photography. In the second
quarter, students will begin studying rocks, minerals, and archeology.
Have a great Thanksgiving and safe travels if you're going out of town.
Sincerely, Scott Cartland Principal
