A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents:
Hope everyone had a wonderful
Thanksgiving holiday!
We will be selling sportswear this
Friday, November 30th, at pick-up!! We have youth
sizes that just arrived and adult sizes are on sale so get a t-shirt
to wear on spirit days.
Just a few things to mention about the
auction. It's right around the corner so get those donation forms
turned in! Also, this year the auction and raffle will take place
on different dates. The raffle is going to be held at the Spring
Picnic, so look for more information about that later.
Don't forget that school is closed for
parent-teacher conferences next Friday, December 7th. Have a great
week!

Principal's Letter
Dear Janney Community,
I hope that everyone had a pleasant and safe holiday break. My
turkey ended up a little dry (happy to hear suggestions on how to
avoid this in the future) but I had good time with family and friends
so I can't complain. On my list of things to be thankful for
is to be working in a school community with such wonderfully creative
and intelligent children, supportive parents, and an incredibly
caring teaching staff. Thanks for being part of such an
incredible school.
Our third annual "Winter Fair" will be this Saturday from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Janney auditorium. This is a
great chance to do some shopping for yourself or others, as there are
many bargains to be had and hand-made items for sale. Proceeds
from renting the booths will go to the student council to support
their ongoing activities.
There will be some excellent staff development happening in the
school this week. Once again we will be graced with a visit by
Katherine Bomer, a leading literacy consultant in the US. She
will be working with our intermediate teachers (grades 3-6) on
Wednesday, focusing on making student writing journals more rigorous
and productive and on pulling small strategy groups during the
reading workshop. Ms. Bomer has been working with our staff for
the past five years and it has been incredible to have her as a
guiding presence over a sustained period of time. One of the
exciting developments over the years is that Ms. Bomer used to model
all of the techniques and strategies that we were covering. Now
Janney staff members take the lead in modeling the work and Ms. Bomer
simply guides the conversation and reflection around it. It's
a clear sign of how far our staff has come in adopting a rigorous and
rich literacy program. Ms. Bomer is also working at Hyde ES and
Mann ES on Thursday and Friday covering other topics and we will be
sending a few teachers to visit those schools to see their practice
and share strategies. Also on Wednesday, our primary teachers
will be attending half-day workshops downtown hosted by Teachers
Institute to plan for the next writing units. All of these
opportunities are time-consuming but very worthwhile and I'm proud
of how engaged our staff is in high-level professional development.
The second round of parent-teacher conferences will be held on
Friday, December 7th. As a reminder, there will be no
school for students on that day. Sign-up sheets for conferences
will be made available in the main hall of the school this Friday
(one week prior as is customary). Please stop by and sign up.
Have a great week!
