A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
Mark
your calendars for next Tuesday, December 11, at 7:15 pm. The next PTA
meeting features a presentation on the science curriculum at Janney. If
you are interested in how science is taught through all of the grades,
don't miss this interactive and lively talk.
If you didn't catch the Janney Sportswear sale on Friday but want to buy a t-shirt, there's an order form up on the Janney website. Fill one out and drop it in the PTA mailbox and we'll send the shirt(s) home with your child.

Just One Day Left...
...to
tell us what you'll be contributing to this year's auction. The
deadline for turning in donor forms is tomorrow, December 5. That
includes donor forms for classroom creations and from teachers for
their terrific outings with kids. Please take a moment to fill out the
donor forms and let us know what you'll be adding to the fabulous array
of items we will feature at the February 2, 2008 Carnevale-Janney
Auction 2008.
Still looking for ideas? Visit the Janney wishlist on www.amazon.com
(or go through the school website) to see our list of suggestions. This
year, we received a donation from a Janney family currently living in
France from the wishlist. So if someone can give to the auction from
the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, you can too. We appreciate your
support!
Need a little encouragement? Visit the table in front
of the auditorium tomorrow at drop-off. We'll share coffee, donuts, and
ideas with you. Please stop by and give us your forms. The auction
catalog goes to print shortly after we return from Winter Break. Don't
wait until after the holiday season to focus on the auction this year:
it's earlier than usual and we will not accommodate any last-minute
requests. Turn in your donor form today-you'll be glad you did.

Free Science Opportunity Offered by UDC
SEMAA, the Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Aerospace Academy, is
offering enrichment programs at the University of the District of
Columbia. They have a Saturday Academy during the academic year. The
next session begins January 19, and applications must be in by January
14. Other sessions begin in March, April, and May. Summer sessions run
Mondays through Fridays. Their mission is to increase the number of DC
students interested in math, science, engineering, and technology
careers. They have programs for a variety of ages. If you are
interested, call Mrs. Akua Sewer-Gunthrope at (202) 274-7461 or e-mail
her at asewer-gunthrope@udc.edu. |
What's Happening in the Library??!!
There
has been lots of activity already this year in the library. Grades PK-1
have learned about different authors and illustrators; and grades 2-6
have spent two months on library orientation: call numbers, how the
library is organized, and other little known facts.
Starting in
December, grades PK-2 will be learning about "Readers Theater,"
focusing on stories such as "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "The
Three Little Pigs." Grade 3 will learn about keyboarding; grade 4 will
practice the basics of word processing a document; and grades 5-6 will
focus on basic research skills and search words.
The Library has several volunteer needs: * People are needed to set up the bulletin boards and be in charge of changing and rotating the themes.
* Each floor of the school has at least one video cart. These need to
be checked monthly to be sure that everything is operational, all the
cables are there, and that each has a DVD and VCR player.
* Shelving-there is always a need! PLEASE be careful if you come in to
shelve, and remember that books are shelved according to the Dewey
Decimal system: the number first and then the author's last name. This
is very important as the kids just had their orientation, and we want
to be sure that the books are in the right place!
A last
reminder: PLEASE sign in on the volunteer clipboard when you go to the
library to help out. We are trying to keep track of everyone who passes
through and all the great work that you do. Contact Pat or Malin in the
Library if you are interested in any of the volunteer opportunities.

Correction
Unfortunately,
since the publication of last week's newsletter, it has come to our
attention that for security reasons, Walter Reed will not accept (and
the USPS will not deliver) letters or packages addressed to "Any
Service Member" or "Any Wounded Service Member." Concerned citizens are
urged instead to make a donation to any of the more than 300 nonprofit
organizations dedicated to helping troops and their families.

Lost
A
silver-white windbreaker jacket with an H&M label in the seam was
accidentally left in the Lost & Found on Friday, November 30. If
found, please return it to Mrs. Leventhal or the Main Office if found.

Congratulations on another stellar year of Trick or Treat for UNICEF,
where kids are helping kids!
Theme of the Month: Responsibility This
month, our second graders will decorate the first floor theme bulletin
board with their lessons about learning to "step up" and be
responsible. Please stop by to admire their artwork.

Principal's Letter
Dear Janney Community,
As
a reminder, there is no school for students this Friday due to
Parent-Teacher conferences. The sign-up forms are in the main hall if
you haven't had a chance yet to sign up for a conference.
On
Saturday, December 15, there will be a bone marrow drive at the school
from 3-6 pm. This is a very simple process, requiring some paperwork
and a cheek swab. We are hoping in particular for registrants of South
Asian descent. Registration costs $52 but is free for anyone of
African-American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Native American
ancestry as there is funding to encourage more participation from these
communities. There is a flyer for the drive in your child's Take Home
Tuesday and I hope that you'll consider participating.
With the
cold weather coming, it's important that your child comes to school
prepared with a warm jacket, hat, and gloves. We send the kids outside
for recess as much as possible, even on cold and blustery days. There
is no firm standard but typically I'll use 28 degrees (with wind chill)
as the marker for deciding if it's indoor or outdoor recess.
As
a corollary to my message in the previous paragraph, please make sure
to check the lost and found on a regular basis for hats, jackets, and
gloves that have been discarded when the temperature is warmer than
expected and left on the playground.
Have a great week!
