A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Just a reminder that tonight's PTA meeting is at 7:15 in the multipurpose room. There will be a presentation on science and how it is taught in all grades at Janney. Don't miss this interesting and informative session!

Have a great week.

Tenley-Friendship Library

The DC Public Library is hosting the third Community Design Meeting to work with the community in designing and constructing the new Tenley-Friendship Library. The Freelon Group-the architect-will present the latest design plans to the community on Wednesday, December 12, at 6:00 pm at the Tenley-Friendship Interim Library, 4200 Wisconsin Avenue, NW.

Janney 4th Graders Seek Your Help!

The 4th grade is going to have a holiday service project on Thursday, December 20th.  The kids will make toiletry kits for homeless men and women, and they need your help!  It would make the kits that much better if we could include a new (or like-new) hand towel in each kit.  Needless to say, this is quite expensive if we try to go out and buy these for the (almost) 100 kits that we want to make!

If any Janney families out there have hand towels that they no longer need, and would consider donating them to this project, we would thrilled and grateful.  A collection box is in the Front Office and you can leave any donations there.

Thank you in advance, and if you have any questions, please contact Lisa Wackler at gatorwack@yahoo.com.

St. Ann's is holding onto a beautiful black down coat, which they think may belong to someone in the Janney community. If you think it is yours, stop by St. Ann's front office or contact Sally Juram at 202-686-5302 or philsal@verizon.net.
Auction Donations Closed

We asked and you answered. Thank you to all the Janney families, friends, and associates who gave so generously this year to Carnevale-Janney Auction 2008. We had a flurry of donations just before the deadline and are now happily wading through the great items. Donations are now closed. We will no longer accept more donor forms, as we now must focus on preparing for the event to be held at the Katzen Arts Center on the American University campus on Feb. 2, 2008. Thank you for your efforts, time, and dedication to our school. All items promised in the donor forms must arrive at the school by Jan. 17, 2008, and can be placed in the office next to Scott Cartland's office at school. You can bring them in now or after the holidays. Many thanks again to our great school community.

Looking for a Few Good Pastry Chefs

Do you make a mean baklava? How about macaroons? The food committee has been putting together a menu of tempting sweets for this year's auction, and we'd love to be able to add several trays of baklava (enough to serve about 60) and macaroons (also enough to serve about 60) to the list. If these are among your specialties, and you think you (or you and  a friend or two) might be up to the challenge, please contact either Cheryl Ohlson (cohlson@gwu.edu) or Sam Corrigan (swarrick@us.checkpoint.com). Thanks!

Counselor's Corner

In our hurried world, it is important to remember the importance ofsleep. Sleep is one of the hallmarks of good health, yet research is showing that children and adolescents are not getting enough sleep or not the right kind of sleep (uninterrupted sleep). When children are well rested, they wake on their own in the morning and feel rested. In  school, they are attentive and available for instruction. When children are not sleeping well, they can be irritable, inattentive, sleepy, overactive, or underactive. Below are some helpful tips about sleep hygiene based on articles by Michael Thorpy, M.D., director of the Sleep-Wake  Disorders Center Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY and Michael J. Bruess, Ph.D.

Avoid napping during the day; it can disturb the normal pattern of sleep and wakefulness.

Avoid stimulants such as caffeine too close to bedtime.

Go to bed at the same time every night.

Exercise can promote good sleep but vigorous exercise needs to be done in the morning or afternoon. An intense workout too close to bedtime can be disruptive to sleep. A relaxing exercise, like yoga, can be done before bed to help initiate a restful night's sleep.

Food can be disruptive right before sleep; a heavy meal too close to bedtime or a meal that is too spicy can interfere with sleep. A light snack may be sleep inducing. Milk and turkey contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, which has been shown in research to help people go to sleep.   But chocolate has caffeine, so milk without chocoate is best.

Ensure adequate exposure to natural light during the day. Light exposure helps maintain a healthy sleep-wake cycle.

Establish a regular relaxing bedtime routine. Try to avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep. Try to get rid of or deal with things that make you worry. If you are unable to do this during the day, write them down before going to bed.

Begin rituals that help you relax each night before bed. A relaxing routine can include taking a warm bath, having a light snack, or reading for a few minutes.

Associate your bed with sleep. It's not a good idea to use your bed to watch TV, listen to the radio, or do homework. If you are not asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed. Find something that makes you feel relaxed. Once you feel sleepy again, go back to bed.

Make your bedroom quiet, dark, and a little bit cool. Even the slightest nighttime noises or luminescent lights can disrupt the quality of your sleep. Try to keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature not too hot (above 75 degrees) or too cold (below 54 degrees).

Does your pet sleep with you? This, too, may cause arousals from either allergies or their movements in the bed. Thus, Fido and Kitty may be better off on the floor than on your sheets.

Family Fun during the Holidays
A new drama group, Broadway Bound, which is specifically designed for the 'tween group, is staging an original production called, "A Fairy Tale Town Meeting" on Saturday, December 15th, at the Writer's Center in Bethesda. The show is a delightful, satirical musical with gentle humor that takes a look at how some of the beloved fairy tale heroines view themselves and voice their opinions about bringing their stories to the 21st century crowd. This play's witty exchanges and original score coalesce to create not only a great play for all ages to enjoy but some wonderful positive messages about being who you are.

Tickets are available at the door or by contacting the show's creator, Mr. Joshua Rich at 202-342-0034. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. The ensemble class is composed of students from various DC schools including some of Janney's finest, and Mr. Rich tweaked this play to fit each of the cast member's unique personalities. You can check out more about Joshua Rich and his music at joshuarich.com

The performances will be held on Saturday, December 15th at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm at the Writer's Center. The Writer's Center is at 4508 Walsh Avenue, Bethesda. Take Wisconsin Avenue north past Bradley Boulevard. Walsh Avenue is the second right past Bradley Boulevard. Parking is available in the public lot across the street from the Writer's Center.

Dear Janney Community,

This Friday is "Crazy Hat Day" at Janney. I'm looking forward to seeing some zany lids!

We have two great concerts coming up in the next week. On Friday, December 14th, the Janney Band, 6th Grade Choir, and Orff Ensemble will perform in the auditorium at 7:30. On Tuesday, December 18th, the Notebusters and Noteboomers will perform at 7:00, also in the auditorium. Both shows will be spectacular.

On Saturday, December 15th, there will be a bone marrow drive at the school from 3-6 pm.  This is a very simple process, requiring some paperwork and a cheek swab. We are hoping in particular for registrants of South Asian descent. Registration costs $52 but is free for anyone of African-American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Native American ancestry as there is funding to encourage more participation from these communities. There is a flyer for the drive in your child's Take Home Tuesday, and I hope you'll consider participating.

Tonight at the PTA meeting, there will be a presentation by myself, Fran McCrackin (1st Grade), and Mary Osterman (4th Grade) about the science curriculum at Janney. There will be an overview of the units that are currently in place and a frank discussion about the possibilities of improving instruction in this area as well as recognition of some of the limitations that are also in place. I promised at the start of the year that science would be primary goal for school improvement, and this meeting is one step in that process. Your feedback and participation are welcome. If you're not able to attend the meeting, you are always welcome to email me your thoughts at scott.cartland@dc.gov.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Scott Cartland
