A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents
We
want to say goodbye and good luck to Allie Hajian and her family. Allie
has been a very valuable contributor to the school for 3 1/2 years and
has served on the PTA for 2 1/2 years and we will really miss her and
her many areas of expertise! A thank you also to Rennie Anderson who
will replace Allie as PTA co-vice-president for the rest of the year.
We hope everyone enjoys a relaxing winter break and we wish everyone a Happy New Year!
Until 2008,

SIT Notes
The
SIT's most recent meeting on November 27 was mostly devoted to a
preliminary discussion of possible configurations of classrooms per
grade in the 2008-2009 school year. Two sixth grade classes will
graduate this year, and we expect, once again, enough new kindergarten
students next year to fill 3-4 classrooms. So some rearrangement will
be needed.
The SIT discussed pros and cons of various options.
We could add another classroom, which would increase both space and
budget pressures; or we could handle all the students in the same
number of classrooms, which would require a multi-age group (MAG) or
larger class sizes in some of the upper grades.
This was a
preliminary discussion. Mr. Cartland won't make any decisions until he
needs to submit a budget for next year. That usually happens in March
or April.
In other matters, the SIT is scheduled to meet on
January 8 with Chancellor Rhee and Allen Lew, who is in charge of
modernizing DCPS facilities. We will discuss plans for renovating and
expanding Janney.

Newsletter Editor Needed
Are you an editorial type? Do you have an eye for detail? Are you
looking for a way to volunteer at Janney but don't have time during the
day? The Janney Newsletter Team is looking for a new editor to join our
team, starting after Winter Break. The workload is approximately three
hours every three weeks.
If you are interested, please contact Elizabeth Levenson at elizabeth_levenson@yahoo.com or Jenny DiBiase at jenandtad@verizon.net. Since we are now an e-newsletter, it would also be helpful to be somewhat computer-savvy, but we can train! |
Something Else to Anticipate This Season...
...Your
invitation to the Carnevale-Janney Auction 2008 to be held Saturday,
February 2, at the Katzen Arts Center. You'll find your invitation in
the January 8 Take Home Tuesday envelope when we return from Winter
Break. Make sure to let us know you're coming and find that babysitter.
...Once
we return from break, we'll be asking all those wonderful donors out
there to bring in their items (if they haven't done so already), so
that the auction committee can inventory, label, and package these
donations. Please leave them in the office next to Scott Cartland's
office at school. We must collect all items by January 17.
...Get
rid of those gift baskets. Let's hope you get lots of goodies this
season. If, at the end, you find you're the owner of some empty gift
baskets you don't want lying around your house, the auction committee
would be glad to have them. Thank you.

A Writing Workshop for Grown-Ups! Hey,
parents and teachers: Ever thought about writing a children's book?
Ever read something your child brought home and thought "Hey, I could
write that!"? Ever had an idea you wanted to transform into a story?
Well,
now is your chance! Janney mom and award-winning children's book author
Erica S. Perl will be teaching a course on children's book writing at
the Writer's Center in downtown Bethesda. Her class, entitled "Writing,
Like, A Kid: A Workshop in Writing for Eight to Twelve Year Olds," will
meet Wednesday evenings from 7:30-10 pm for eight weeks, starting
January 30, 2008.
The course will cover all aspects of writing
for this age group, from developing characters, outlining plot, and
writing dialogue to understanding the relevant children's book markets.
During the course, participants will explore a variety of writing
exercises and read many short pieces, and will workshop chapters of
their own works in progress. By the end of the course, participants
will have developed their outlines and opening chapters and will have
the tools they need to move their projects forward. No level of
creative writing experience needed--come give it a try and have fun.
To sign up, go to www.writer.org
and look for Erica's workshop in the list of course offerings (under
Adults Write for Children). Or, for more information, email Erica: erica@ericaperl.com

Principal's Letter
To the Janney Community:
Our
loss is Canada's gain! I'm very sad to report that this will be the
last week that the Hajian family will be officially part of the Janney
Community. Krikor (2nd Grade), Nyiri (PK), and Arsen (husband) will all
be missed. In particular though, Allie Hajian will be difficult to
replace. In the last few years, Allie has become invaluable to the PTA
through serving on the EBoard and most recently with her work on the
electronic newsletter, PTA Announce list, and website. As with many of
our fantastic parent volunteers, it's going to take multiple people to
fill her shoes. Best wishes for the move to Toronto!
We had a
great turnout for the concert on Friday. The Janney Band, 6th Grade
Choir, and Orff Ensemble all sounded terrific. Many thanks and
congratulations to Kristen Bellissimo and Sterling Scroggins for their
tireless efforts in bringing wonderful music to our school.
As a
reminder, the Notebusters and Noteboomers take the stage tonight at 7
pm in the Janney auditorium. As with all Notebusters shows, seating
will be limited so arriving early is advisable.
Friday is the
last day of school for this calendar year. Students return on
January 7th. Teachers will return the week prior but will be
engaging in professional development activities. I know for many of you
the extended holiday time is a hardship, but our staff values the time
to regroup and organize for the second half of the year.
Have a
wonderful break and I hope that everyone has a great time with family
and friends. Stay safe whether you're traveling or sticking close to
home.
Happy New Year!
