Thanks to Hospitality Volunteers for Back-to-School Night

Many thanks to the hospitality committee volunteers who helped to pull together all of the refreshments for Back-to-School Night. The delicious baked goods were provided by Karen Kalat, Susanne Koffsky, Carol Piwowarski, Jasmeet Seehra, Anita Seline, and Melissa Torgovitsky. Patricia Keith, Marie Koczela, Jasmeet Seehra, Ankur Goel, and Fernando Laguarda helped with set up and clean up. Many hands do make light work. Thanks again.

Flu Shots Offered at Janney October 9

On Thursday, October 9 from 2:30-4:30 pm Janney will be providing flu shots on a walk-in basis (no appointments needed). Flu shots are available for adults and children 8 years old and older (accompanied by a parent). The cost is $24 payable in cash or by check made out to Capitol Travel Medicine. Note: Teachers are not required to wait in line.

School Picture Day is Friday, October 17!

In an upcoming Take Home Tuesday Packet, parents will find an order form from Lifetouch Pictures for students' school pictures. There are a variety of picture packages available, with options for different sizes, quantities, or backgrounds. An option to buy your child's classroom photo is also offered.

All children's photos will be taken for the Janney yearbook.  However, if you wish to buy your child's school pictures, the order form MUST be completed and turned in to your child's teacher with payment (checks payable to Lifetouch NSS) no later than the start of school on Friday, October 17. Extra order forms will be available in the Main Office in the PTA Cabinet.  Please note--The order form can be a bit confusing. Please read the order information carefully before making your selections!

For those children whose pictures don't turn out (or who are absent on Picture Day), Retake Day is scheduled for Wednesday, December 3. REMEMBER: If you want to buy your child's school pictures, they must be ordered and paid for no later than start-of-school, Friday morning, October 17.

Get Wild at Janney's Wild--November 14

Here are the answers to some of the questions that you may have about Janney's Wild, Janney's premier fundraising event on November 14:

·    Is this an event for all Janney Families? This is a terrific evening of conversation, food, drinks, music and gaming-all to support our favorite public elementary school, Janney! But do plan to get a babysitter because the food, drinks, and fun are adult-oriented.
·    What kind of games are we talking about?  All of your favorites-craps, slot machines, roulette, poker, and the much-anticipated Blackjack Tournament. And during a live auction, there will be an opportunity to win fabulous prizes with all of your winnings!
·    I'm not much of a gambler-should I still come? Of course! There will be plenty of great food and drink, and live music. Plus, Janney Parents are known for their love of fun and conversation. You don't want to miss the opportunity to mix and mingle with your adult friends!
·    Is it too late to pitch in and help? It is NEVER too late! We are still looking for sponsorships to provide valuable support for our school. If you or someone you know can sponsor part of this event, please let us know. There are sponsorship opportunities for every pocketbook. Ask at your place of business about matching grants-they're a terrific way to boost your donation. And remember: all contributions are tax-deductible.
·    I don't want to miss it-how do I RSVP for Janney's Wild? Invitations will arrive home in your child's Take Home Tuesday soon, so be on the lookout. And we hope to see you there for a wild evening!

Save Lids, to Save Lives

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in preparation for it we are starting to collect Yoplait lids to help  raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® foundation. Please start collecting your Yoplait PINK yogurt and smoothie lids. For every pink lid you send in, Yoplait® will donate 10 cents to the breast cancer cause, up to $1.5 million. Yoplait guarantees a donation of at least $500,000. This money goes to research and treatment across the country.

Please collect your lids at home and send them to school with your child. We will be collecting lids until the December break. So keep bringing them in! The class with the most lids will receive a special treat. If you have any questions please contact Miss Rockwell in K-R or by email at MissRockwellsclass@gmail.com.

Principal's Letter

Dear Janney Families,

I enjoyed seeing all of you at Back-to-School Night last Wednesday. The event was well attended and I believe our parents were able to receive the type of information needed from teachers to help us continue working together to provide our children with a world class education. I would like to thank all of our teachers for working hard to prepare for the evening. In addition, I would also like to thank the PTA for providing all of the delicious refreshments.

We are continuing the interview process for filling all of our vacancies. We are proud to announce Ms. Emily Strulson as our new half time Art teacher. She is an experienced Art teacher in DCPS and she will officially begin her teaching assignment this week. We are happy to have her join the Janney ES family.

In an effort to provide our teachers with the necessary tools to educate our children, Janney ES has become a member of the Collaborative Schools Initiative. The Collaborative Schools are a group of schools, approved by Chancellor Rhee, that develops and participates in effective professional development programs. On Friday, October 3 many of our teachers will be attending the collaborative schools kick-off event in the morning. We are also scheduled to have parent/teacher conferences beginning at 12:00 noon that day. Our teachers have been given permission to modify their parent/teacher conference times to accommodate attending the event. Many of our teachers are scheduling conferences throughout the week in addition to the Friday conference day. Please work with your child's teacher on scheduling a parent/teacher conference time that will work for you and the teacher. We greatly appreciate your support and cooperation!

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Dr. Karen D. Crews
Principal
