Principal's Letter

Dear Janney Families,

I hope everyone had a great week. Although it was a short week, it was a busy one. The time seemed to go by so fast!

It is report card time again! The second advisory ended on January 16th. Our teachers will be working on completing report cards this week. We will distribute report cards to students in the take home Tuesday on February 3rd.

As we experience more cold weather, please continue to dress your child in warm clothing to wear outside for recess, field trips, fire drills, etc. We want to make sure our children are warm and comfortable for outdoor events.

Last week, you received a survey regarding enrollment for next year. Please be sure to complete the survey and return it to your child's teacher. If you have more than one child at Janney, you only need to return one survey. This information will help us plan for next year. Thank you for your assistance.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
The SIT Corner:

Thanks to all who responded to the PPP survey which went home last Wednesday. We debated the survey within the SIT and it took a while to finalize the langauge and prepare it for distribution.  We apologize for the short turn around time.  The preliminary results are that of those repsonding, 61 support the SIT's position, 12 oppose, and 2 offered comments alone.

We did not expect unanimity of responses and we understand that there are some within the community who may not agree with us.  To those of you who do not support the SIT's position, please stay engaged and feel free to talk with us as events devlop.  Please remember that the SIT is committed to Janney's future, and while some of us may disagree, we all share a common desire to help Janney be the best school it can be.

We do not have a firm date for a community meeting yet but we expect it to occur sometime in early February.  We will certainly let you know as soon as it is scheduled.  In the meantime we will continue to advocate for modernization and an addition to Janney as soon as possible.  Thanks again and, as always, we welcome your comments.

Don't forget the soup kitchen is tomorrow, Wednesday, January 28. Parents please bring in lasagna, bread, green beans, ice cream, and lettuce before twelve. Teachers who are signed up for November, please remember to organize your class to bring cookies, salad fixings, and snacks.  Thanks!  Camille Martone, 362-7555.

The Janney Players present "Annie Jr." February 20th & 21st

Join us as our own Janney Players present "Annie Jr.," the story of a plucky little orphan girl and her search for parents, love, and happiness.  Hope abounds in this fabulous version of the long-running Broadway play, which has captivated folks big and small for over 30 years.   Will Annie find her parents in the midst of the Great Depression?  Will she find a home and happiness with Daddy Warbucks?  Or will the conniving Miss Hannigan keep her in the "Hard-Knock Life" forever?  To answer these questions and more, you'll have to come to the show!

The shows are Friday, February 20th at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, February 21st, at 2:00 p.m. at Hardy Middle School, 1819 35th Street NW, Washington, 20007.  Tickets go on sale the week before the show (stay tuned for more information in next week's newsletter), and are $5 for general seating and $15 for reserved seating.  There is free, but limited, parking at Hardy.  Refreshments will be sold during intermission.

Bring the whole family and watch as our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders put on another terrific show.  We bet your bottom dollar that you'll have a great evening!
Notes from the Healthsuite

To help parents make informed decisions, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and Triaminic® developed the national "Sick Day Guidelines: Making the Right Call When Your Child Has a Cold." The guidelines provide parents with the key signs that they should consider keeping their child home from school. This campaign is for educational purposes only; NASN does not endorse products.

Note: Children may not carry medication of any type to self medicate during the school day. A doctor's order is required and all medication must be administered by the school nurse or student's parent.

"Sick Day Guidelines: Making the Right Call When Your Child Has a Cold"

Should I keep my child home or send him or her to school?
Consider keeping your child home if he or she:
·Has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher
·Has been vomiting
·Has symptoms that prevent him or her from participating in school, such as:
−Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite
−Productive coughing, sneezing
−Headache, body aches, earache
−Sore throat
A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat in children are headache and stomach upset. Contact your pediatrician as your child needs a special test to determine if it is strep throat.
Keep your child home until his or her fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication.
Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and expose others unnecessarily to illness.

Does my child have the flu?
·The flu is serious! Call your pediatrician at the first sign of flu symptoms, which typically come on suddenly, including:
−High fever
−Chills
−Head ache, body aches, ear ache
−Nausea, vomiting
−Dry cough
If you're unsure about the best way to treat your child's cold or flu, ask your school nurse, doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider.

How do I make my child feel better?
·Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and put limits on TV watching
·Encourage fluids; like water, soup, juice and ice
·Help your child relax by reading him a story and giving him plenty of TLC
·Consider using a cool humidifier

The Sick Day Guidelines and more information on using children's cough and cold medications appropriately are available at www.nasn.org or by calling 1-800-KIDS-987. The Sick Day Guidelines are available in both English and Spanish. This campaign is for educational purposes only; NASN does not endorse products.
