A Note from Your PTA Co-Presidents

Happy Summer (almost), Janney Families!

It's just about time to shift gears to hotter days, and hopefully lots of fun and restful family vacation time.  But before summer vacation begins, we would like to say congratulations to our 5th and 6th graders who will be graduating this week. We wish you all well on your next steps and hope to see your familiar faces around Janney in the years to come. This Wednesday afternoon at 3pm the school will celebrate our 5th and 6th graders and their accomplishments with the annual Janney tradition that makes everyone cry- the Clap Out. Even if you don't have a graduating student, it is an event worth seeing.

We would like to say thank you to our Principal Dr. Karen Crews who has announced her resignation from DCPS and will be moving onto a new position next year. We have enjoyed working with Dr. Crews this year, and appreciate her hard work and her many contributions serving as Janney's Principal. We wish her all the best on her next endeavors. We must also say goodbye to some of our Janney teachers who have helped make Janney such a wonderful place to learn and grow -- Pat Brown, Jackie Mann, Kate McCarthy, and Barbara Clements. A very big thank you to all of these educators who are leaving our building -- you have all contributed to Janney and to our students' growth and well-being.

We would also like to say thank you to the hundreds of parents and staff members who have gone above and beyond this year to support Janney through not only financial contributions, but also significant contributions of time and energy. You have chaired PTA committees, volunteered in the classroom, cybrary and front office, chaperoned field trips and special events, and helped out in so many other ways. You have amazed and inspired us, and you are an enormous part of what makes Janney the wonderful, dynamic, and creative learning community that we love.

We hope to see you tonight at 7:30pm in the multipurpose room for the last PTA meeting of the school year. Our agenda includes final approval of the 2009-2010 PTA budget, our annual PTA "awards" ceremony in which we recognize significant contributions from outgoing Janney parents, and a visit from our new Principal, Ms. Norah Lycknell, who will introduce herself and get her own glimpse of the Janney community. The PTA will provide babysitting during the meeting.

While you are off enjoying your summer, never fear -- the PTA will be hard at work getting ready for another wonderful school year at Janney. We will be passing the torch to the two new PTA Co-Presidents, Scott Cheney and Jonathan McHugh, who will be hard at work next year for our school. Look out for the summer mailing packet in August -- this will include important reminders, school supply lists, and upcoming dates for some old traditions like the Fall Picnic, the Spring Musical, International Night, and Janney's Wild -- as well as fun new events such as the October Carnival and a Spring Plant Sale.

Have a great week and a great summer.

Feedback Sought on Financial Literacy Program

Dear Parents:

As you may know, the Janney Library received a grant to develop a program on financial literacy. This year, the program was implemented in all grades at the appropriate level by Pat Brown and Malin Kerwin.  You should have received a letter about the project in the June 2 take-home Tuesday folder, as well as a Moon Jar which you and your child can use at home to continue to develop understanding of the value of money and its role in our lives.

Ms. Brown is seeking feedback on the program, both positive and negative. Your feedback is important both so that Janney can continue to develop and improve the program as we go forward, and so that Ms. Brown can effectively report back to the foundation which provided the grant.  Please send any comments you have to Pat Brown at patriciae.brown@dc.gov and write "Moon Jar" in the subject line.  Thank you very much!
Your PTA Dollars at Work

2009 grads

In an event unprecedented in Janney's long history, two classes--134 students!--are graduating from our school this year. Many parent volunteers are working hard to ensure that this year's fifth and sixth graders receive a proper send-off to middle school, and the PTA was able to bump up the amount of money allotted to graduation events to help make this possible. In the next school year, the PTA is instituting a new grant-making process, which will make it easier for teachers and parents with ideas for enhancing our students' educational experience to apply for PTA funds. Look for more information this summer!

Please Check the Lost & Found Before June 15!

All unclaimed items in the Lost and Found will be donated to local charities on the last day of school at 12:15pm SHARP.  Please stop by BEFORE then to check for items belonging to your children.

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Janney Healthy Foods Committee

As parents we know that our kids learn better when they are healthy and proper nutrition is essential to good health. Research suggests that kids eating a diet emphasizing whole, organic, and locally grown food are healthier and therefore should learn better.  A group of parents and the Principal of Key Elementary School (a DCPS in Palisades) has formed a Healthy Foods Committee to push for a healthier, more sustainable food system at Key. The committee is working with the Key School PTA and the DCPS food provider, Chartwells, to increase the amount of locally-sourced and organic snacks and prepared meals at Key and is exploring ideas like a school garden and composting (largely as a related educational opportunity).

Discussions with Chartwells suggest that changes at the DCPS level would be facilitated by the support of a broader constituency. Accordingly, the Key Healthy Foods Committee is inviting others DCPS to join them as partners in this effort. Working together, the schools could explore pilot initiatives with Chartwells and engage supporters such as the DC Farm to School Network, a group of advocates working to get local produce, nutrition education and gardens into DC schools.

If you are interested please join representatives from Key at the next DC Farm to School Network meeting scheduled for Wednesday June 17th from Noon to 2PM at Friends of the Earth (1717 Massachusetts Ave. NW).  Lunch will be provided so please RSVP to andrea.northup@gmail.com.  If you are interested in joining the new Janney Healthy Foods Committee please email Lucy Smiles at lucysmiles99@yahoo.com.
Note from the Healthsuite

Re: Medications Stored in the Healthsuite

Dear Parents,

If your child has medication stored in the health suite, please make arrangements to pick up the medication by the end of school or your child's last day.  Medications can't be stored over the summer, thus any medications left at the end of the school year must be discarded.

Medication forms for your use, for the 09-10 school year may be obtained from the DCPS web site.  Please have the form completed over the summer and return it with your child's medication for the next school year.  Medications will be accepted starting the first day of school: Monday, August 24, 2009.

http://www.k12.dc.us/enrollment/enroll.htm

I will be assigned to another school during the summer break.  If you have questions over the summer, you may leave a message for me with the office staff. I will return your call as soon as I receive the message.

Have a safe, enjoyable summer!

Sincerely,

Ros Polk, RN

Summer Volunteer Opportunity: Help Build the Deal Library!

As you know, our wonderful librarian, Pat Brown, is leaving Janney to establish the new library at Deal.  While this is a huge loss for Janney, it is wonderful to think about the kind of library that will be awaiting many of our kids at Deal in the future!

If you have kids heading to Deal next year or are considering Deal for the future, or if you just want to do something nice for Pat as thanks for her great service to our kids, you can volunteer to help her get organized at Deal in July.  All of July, Pat will be unloading boxes, developing inventories, ordering new books, and shelving books -- a huge task with which she could use our help.  If you are around in July, and have any time to spare, please contact Pat at patriciae.brown@dc.gov to offer your help.

Thanks VERY much to Pat and Malin Kerwin for making the Janney Library such a special place for exploration and learning!

Alice Deal Middle School has a big favor to ask:
If you own copies of the books listed below and are looking to create shelf space, please consider donating them to Deal. Doing so will benefit next year's students enormously.

Required reading for 2009-10 7th-grade English classes: 'The Skin I'm In,' Sharon G. Flake; 'Gilgamesh: A Verse Translation,' Herbert Mason; '7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens,' Sean Covey; 'The Miracle Worker,' William Gibson; 'The Ch'i Lin Purse: A Collection of Chinese Stories,' Linda Fang; 'The Devil's Arithmetic,' Jane Yolen; 'Heroes, Gods, and
Monsters of the Greek Myths,' Bernard Evslin; and 'The Bronze Bow,' Elizabeth George Speare.

Required reading for 2009-10 6th-grade English classes: 'Where the Red Fern Grows,' Wilson Rawls; 'Esperanza Rising,' Pam Munoz Ryan; and 'Hatchet,' Gary Paulsen.

You may drop off the books at the Deal front office ( 3815 Fort Drive, NW ) or at my home ( 6006 33rd St., NW ) -- whichever is more convenient.

The school's teachers and students greatly appreciate your generosity.
