lycknell photoPrincipal's Letter

Janney Families,

Although last week was a shortened one, teachers and students persevered in their teaching and learning.  We ended the week with a Crazy Hair Spirit Day that revealed Mohawks, green hair and sideways ponytails, and celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day project during which we collected blankets and toys for the animal shelter, clothing for ThriveDC, and money to support the rainforests of South America.  This week the LSRT will continue its collaboration around the development of the SY2010-2011 budget, the 3rd grade, Ms. Carrier's class and Ms. Anderson's class will explore the city on field trips, and we will host a bake sale before and after school on Thursday to support the Haiti earthquake recovery effort (more on the bake sale is included in an article below).

As many of you know, our third, fourth and fifth grade students completed the third round of DC-BAS interim testing last week.  As evident in my visits to classrooms and my conversations with teachers and students, learning continues to take place at a high level at Janney, emphasizing the growth of individual students.  Although the DC-BAS is only one measure of that growth, the results of this last iteration affirm the incredible accomplishments of our Janney community.  Some highlights include:

·      A growth in the number of proficient and advanced students at all grade levels and in both reading and math, marked by an overall growth of 3%
·      A narrowed achievement gap at all grade levels and in both assessed subjects
·      An overall increase of 16.7% in the number of advanced students in math
·      An overall increase of 8.9% in the number of advanced students in reading
·      A decrease of 4% in the number of below basic and basic students in math
·      A decrease of 4.4% in the number of below basic and basic students in reading
·      A 15% closure of the proficiency gap in math
·      A 17% closure of the proficiency gap in reading

At this point in the year we have already matched the levels of proficiency from the end of last year (as marked by the 2009 DC-CAS) and it is only January!

As part of our ongoing data analysis and action planning process, we will identify the levers that allowed us to achieve this progress, and the growth areas that must be addressed to further that advancement.  We know that the work of our earlier-grade teachers has been critical to providing the foundation for our testing grades.  We also know that the high-level of teacher planning, the review of student work and data, a renewed dedication to our inclusion model, the cycle of observations to improve practice, a culture of achievement, and the consistent belief that every student can and must grow have all contributed to our success.  We will look more carefully, by grade level, class and student at the specific skills that showed the greatest growth, as well as those standards that must be re-taught, enriched  or emphasized in the remaining months of the school year.

I cannot overstate how proud I am of our learners' accomplishments, and how confident I am this growth will continue - well done Janney community!

With respect and best wishes for the week,

Sincerely,
Bake Sale for Haiti

The loss of human life and the destruction of Port-au-Prince due to last week's earthquake has been devastating. The world is mobilizing to support Haiti, and we all can help, even in small ways. Janney is no exception. Baked goods and Mardi Gras beads will be available for sale this Thursday, January 28th before (in place of Jamboree) and after school. Buy a treat and support the people of Haiti!

Please contact Maureen Leventhal (maureen.leventhal@dc.gov) or Shana Zallman (olmeg1@mac.com) with any questions.

Janney Players Present Walt Disney's Jungle Book!

Save the date!  The Janney Players present Walt Disney's Jungle Book on February 19 at 7pm and February 20 at 2pm, at Hardy Middle School. More Detail to follow in next Tuesday's newsletter.  This is a great birthday party opportunity!
Display Case Sign-Ups

There will be a short meeting on Thursday, January 28 at 3:30 at the collection case in the front hallway. After reviewing a few instructions, there will be an opportunity for signing-up. Given the limited number of display weeks, there will be a lottery, if necessary.  If your child would like to team up with friends or siblings to share the display space on a given week, that would be welcomed.  Many thanks for your interest in sharing your collection with the Janney community.
