Principal's Letter
Happy New Year!
There is something so liberating about the first few days of
a new year (and this time, a new decade) that provide an opportunity to
reflect, start again, resolve to do something new, or to continue on a path
with renewed vigor and commitment. We do all of these things as individuals and as
a community, and reestablishing our work at Janney is no exception.
Since September, we have built on the foundation of a
remarkable academic and social program by looking more closely at teaching practices
and their connection to individual student learning, refining systems and
procedures, working to create an even more inclusive environment, planning for
a modernized facility, and fostering collaboration among all of the critical
participants in our community. We
have designed an observation and feedback cycle to talk about best practices in
the classroom, held data and action conferences to discuss the skill-level
needs of students, refined a new morning routine in the form of Jamboree, and
are near the final stages of the modernization design process, just to name a
few things.
But for all that we have accomplished, we will persist in
meeting our goal of creating a community of learners who consistently enjoy the
values of achievement, inquiry, reflection, experimentation, collaboration and
equity. Part of moving forward
means a few adjustments - a new specials schedule that increases academic
learning time and teacher collaborative time, weekly themes of respect and
responsibility at Jamboree (this week's theme is respect for others through
listening and conversation), breaking ground on the new building in March,
etc.
We make these adjustments by collecting data, from having
conversations to administering community surveys. One such survey is the Parent Conference Survey from the
month of December. The full survey
results and future actions can be found here;
thank you for all those that participated. Getting as complete a picture as possible is critical to our
growth process. It is this
spirit of constant reflection and desire to improve that drives our work at
Janney.
Although we get off to a relatively slow start on our events
calendar this week, we have several important dates ahead. On Tuesday we will have a PTA Executive
Board meeting. On Wednesday, Mayor
Fenty, Mary Cheh and the team from OPEFM will join us for the ceremonial
groundbreaking at 10:30am; several members of the SIT, LSRT and PTA Executive
Board will be there to represent the parent community and the Student Council
will represent our students.
Several classes have also agreed to share a brief performance for the
event. Please keep in mind that
actual work will not begin before March, but this groundbreaking will allow us
to formally initiate the modernization conversation with our students.
In the weeks ahead, we will strengthen our commitment to
community service through three opportunities around the Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day of Service (please see Shana Zallman's submission to this and next
week's newsletter for more information), celebrate crazy hair day (Friday,
January 22nd), and have our third principal's coffee (Tuesday,
January 12th at 8:10am) around grade-level expectations at
Janney.
Taking one more step back to 2009, I want to thank Ms.
Gentile and Mr. Scroggins for a wonderful winter concert, and Ms. Gentile, Ms.
Carrier, Ms. Hunter, and Ms. Potocki for leading us during the Holiday Sing
Along. It is always such a joy to
see the many talents that grace Janney, and I look forward to many more shows
in the new year.
I wish everyone a healthy, thoughtful,
resolution-fulfilling, and blissful 2010!
Sincerely,

Help Janney Participate in the MLK Day of Service!
In honor of the upcoming MLK day of service, Janney will collect items for 3 different organizations beginning Friday, January 8th and running through Friday, January 22nd. Students and family members can drop off donations in the labeled boxes that will be in the first floor hallway, to the right of Ms. Soribe's security desk. The three organizations are Thrive DC, The Washington Animal Rescue League and the Washington Humane Society and the Rainforest Action Network.
Thrive DC is in need of gently-used or new adult hats, gloves, scarves, and coats. The Washington Animal Rescue League and the Washington Humane Society need towels and blankets (no sheets please!), kongs, peanut butter, fake mice, and jingle balls. A digital camera would be greatly appreciated by the Humane Society to help them document cases of animal mistreatment and cruelty. (This would be better placed in Shana Zallman's box in the office to ensure its safety.) Finally, Janney Jaguars can help live jaguars in South American forests by dropping coins and dollar bills into the labeled jug. The money collected will be sent to the Rainforest Action Network to help them in their efforts to curb deforestation and climate change. Thank you for your participation!
Please email Shana Zallman if you have any questions.

Contributing to the E-Newsletter
All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.
Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an
attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included
in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active
(clickable).
If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.
Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.
We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
