lycknell photoPrincipal's Letter

It may have been wet and chilly, but last week was yet another productive one at Janney.  Teachers and students used their imaginations to play indoor games during recess, classes used collection devices to determine how much rain fell, and our Janney students remembered to be respectful even without outdoor time.  In fact our students have officially earned 1,000 paw prints!  This Friday at Jamboree I will announce the school-wide celebration and that lucky student who turned in the 1,000th paw print.  Stay tuned...

We also have several parents to thank for their contributions to our community.   As part of National School Lunch Week, we enjoyed a lunchtime visit from representatives of Citronelle and the Share Our Strength organization, including Jean-Jacques Retourne (otherwise known as Olivier's Dad), the Maitre D' and General Manager of Citronelle.  Two other parents - Angela Johnson and Amy Morrill-Bijeau - did an amazing job organizing and facilitating Picture Day.  As a result of their hard work, we actually stayed ahead of schedule for most of the day!

On Tuesday (10/20) morning at 8am, another principal, Dr. Kim of Alice Deal Middle School, will join us for a session on the transition to middle school.  All fourth and fifth-grade parents and families are invited to attend the session, beginning at 6pm on Tuesday in the multipurpose room.

On Friday (10/23), representatives from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will conduct our official attendance audit (1:15 - 3:15).  During this time, each Janney student will be "counted" to ensure that our recorded enrollment reflects our actual numbers.  Because these counts are tied in to school budgets and resources, it is critical that all students (unless in case of sickness or emergency) are present for the school day.

Friday also brings our first whole school assembly.  Students in all grades will watch the play One Gold Coin, a story adapted from the similarly-named Central American folktale by Alma Flor Ada. The "one gold coin" passes through the hands of a series of endearing characters transforming their lives and their hearts.  Students will even receive a "gold coin" of their own to pass on the message about the importance of giving.

Our Student Council representatives will also present to our older students (grades 3-5) at the beginning of the assembly.  Each elected official will highlight one critical goal that they would like to attain, reflecting on their most realistic and important campaign promises.  These presentations will provide a civics lesson in which Janney constituents will hold our developing leaders accountable for their actions, as well as providing support for the Council to reach their aspirations for the Janney community.

For a more in-depth conversation about student goal-setting at all developmental levels, please visit the Principal's Corner for this week's article.  Supporting students in thoughtful goal setting allows students to make more meaningful connections between increased effort, confidence and achievement.

As C.S. Lewis said, "you are never too old [or too young] to set a new goal or to dream a new dream."  Have a wonderful week Jaguars!

Sincerely,
A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

Good afternoon.  As you all know, the Janney Fall Carnival was postponed last Saturday due to really rotten weather. It is rescheduled for this Saturday, October 24th from 2:00 to 6:00 pm at Janney.  We all hope you can attend, as this is our first major fundraiser for the year.

Many, many thanks to Melissa Meierhoefer and Jennie Bonney for all their hard work in pulling the Carnival together.  We hope that all the volunteers can keep their timeslots and commitments from the original date. If not, please let your room parent know.

And a big thank you to Forester construction for delaying putting up the
fence on the soccer field for the library construction project until after
our Carnival.  It is much appreciated.

Thanks also to Amy Bijeau and Angela Johnson for coordinating picture day last Friday.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Janney Directory is Here

The long-awaited Janney Directory comes home today in the take home Tuesday envelope of you oldest Janney student.  Check your information and if anything is incorrect or out of date, please send corections to us.

Once you get this hot pink little book, you may want more copies. Well, we can sell you more for just $10 a piece, checks payable to Janney PTA. Look for a table at the Janney Jamboree or after school this week, while supplies last. Or place payment with your child 'a name and teacher and we will get you a copy.

If you have any questions, please contact Anita Seline or Rennie Anderson. Thank you.

Deal Night at Janney

Deal Middle School Principal Melissa Kim will be at Janney on Tuesday night, October 20th at 6pm for the annual "Deal Night" talk. Parents and students who are interested in learning more about the school and are considering attending Deal are invited to attend the presentation, ask questions, and meet Ms. Kim.

Janney Book Fair

DON'T BUY BOOKS... YET!

On October 31 and Nov. 1st, the annual Janney Book Fair will be held at Politics and Prose book store (all day both days!), 5015 Connecticut Ave (btw. Nebraska and Fessenden St. NW).  Mark your calendar and BE SURE to stop by shop because Janney will receive 20% of all Janney sales.  You can buy books for yourself, books for the kids, books for the classrooms, specialists and school library.  You can also get t-shirts, calendars, CD's and DVD's - almost everything in the wonderfully well-stocked store - and all you have to do is tell them you're from Janney.  This fun event offers the opportunity to do holiday shopping early and spend time with friends while supporting Janney!  Tell friends, neighbors and relatives to stop by, too, because ALL sales from the extended Janney community count.  And we only do this ONCE a year, so don't miss out!

At the Janney Book Fair, there will also be special storytime events and costumed mystery guests, so watch for news in the newsletter and the Take Home Tuesday.

It is also the BEST volunteer opportunity on the Janney calendar.  If you'd like to be part of the fun, email the Book Fair Volunteer Coordinator, Lauren Case.

Happy Reading... SOON!

Call for Janney Small Grants Proposal

The next deadline for applications for a grant from the Janney PTA Small Grants Program is October 30th!  Do you know of a fabulous acting group that produces shows for elementary kids?  Or an interesting dance troupe?  Are there special materials that your grade could really benefit from for a science project? How about a Janney Film Festival with Janney students making their own films?  Or a music festival for Janney student bands?   Do you know an interesting speaker?  These are all just a few ideas that could be funded by the PTA Small Grants Program that can cover activities from as little as $25 to $750.  Applications forms and more information about the grant are available on the Janney website at:  http://www.janneyschool.org/school_forms/School_form.htm  Or for more information contact Dan Rosenthal, Pippa TrenchTawana Franklin or Tracy Scarrow.
The Butterfly Garden Takes Flight

Our Butterfly Garden will move to its temporary location at St. Columba's Nursery School this Saturday, Oct. 24th starting at 10:30.  Once our renovation/expansion is completed, the plants will be returned.  Volunteers are needed to help dig up the plants and transport them to St. Columba's.  Please contact Shana Zallman if you can help.  Shovels and wheelbarrows are also needed!

Mini Walk For the Homeless

We've been getting quite a few registration forms returned, but we are still missing a lot.  Every student should have a signed registration form in to their teacher by October 21st.  All Janney students will participate on November 6th, but the registration forms are extremely important!  Thrive, DC (our "Soup Kitchen") receives money from Fannie Mae for each form turned in.  Extra registration forms are available in the office.  Volunteers are also needed for November 6th to help supervise the "Snack Packs" that each child will make for a homeless person.  Please contact Shana Zallman if you can help.

Janney Open House

Janney will host its Fall Open House on Friday, November 13th at 9:15 a.m. Prospective parents will have a chance to tour the school, talk to students and parents, and meet Janney's new principal and vice principal. The event, including introductions, tours, and a Q&A session, typically lasts about 2 1/2 hours, and is intended for prospective parents, not children.  Please let us know if you're interested in conducting school tours that morning. Also, the hospitality committee will be mobilized to provide baked goods! Stay tuned.

Please let prospective Janney families know about this event!

Julie Hamlin and Karen Garman.

The Library Needs You!

If you are available and interested in helping out in the library this year, Malin and Lyndsey -- Janney's wonderful librarians -- welcome your assistance!  They are teaching classes concurrently this year, so much help is needed to get the books back on the shelves and the new books processed as soon as possible in order for the students to be able to get to them quickly.  Whatever pockets of time you may have will be appreciated and valued.  If you have any questions, feel free to stop up on the third floor to check in with them directly, or feel free to contact Marla Viorst by email or phone (202-413-2218). Thank you!

Theme of the Month:
This month, our pre-k and kindergarten classes are learning about caring and telling us about caring through the messages they have made on their "caring" people.  Please stop by the first floor bulletin board across from Mr. Varner's class to see all the wonderful ways our students are teaching us how to make a caring world.

If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.

Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.

We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
