Principal's Letter Mother Nature chipped on Sunday and graced us with a beautiful day for the Janney Fall Carnival - the fourth time was the charm - but it was truly the efforts of Melissa Meierhoefer, Jennie Bonney, Karen Harris, Diane Schiff, and the many parent volunteers who made the event such a success. I extend my sincerest thanks to all those who planned, donated materials and time, and attended; even if the height and weight limit kept me out of the moon bounces, it was a thrill to see so many smiling (and painted) faces!
Our multipurpose room hosted several events last week, including a presentation by Deal Principal Melissa Kim and a panel of Deal students (including several Janney alumni). For those who are interested, the full presentation will be posted on the Janney website as soon as I receive it from Principal Kim.
On Friday, students joined actors from the InterAct Story Theater for a performance of One Gold Coin, a group brought to Janney through the efforts of Rona Walters. Students in grades three - five also witnessed the inauguration of our Student Council representatives as they took the oath of office and reviewed their key goals for the year.
This last week of October guarantees much delight. After an LSRT meeting at 6pm on Wednesday (10/28), we will have a half-day for teacher recordkeeping on Thursday (10/29). Prior to students' dismissal at 12:15, we will invite families to our annual Fall Parade on the greentop beginning at 9:45am. Following an hour of costume display, students will return to their classes for individual celebrations. Although we will not have a formal lunchtime on that day, those students who wish to purchase a hot lunch will be able to do so before heading home.
While students enjoy a long weekend, teachers and staff will participate in a Friday (10/30) professional development day focused on goal-setting and learning objectives. The week will end with a bang at the Janney Book Fair at Politics and Prose (Saturday 10/31 and Sunday 11/1), where many of our parents and staff members will share their favorite children's books (in costume, of course - I am looking forward to my time slot on Saturday afternoon!).
Although I will not be submitting a new article to the website, I encourage you to take this time to catch up on pieces from past weeks. These articles allow all of our stakeholders to enjoy common discussions around augmenting teaching, learning, and the culture of efficacy and growth at Janney. Please look for a new article next time!
Have a frightfully fantastic week!
Sincerely,

A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
Wow, what a great day for Fall Carnival! A beautiful fall day and a lot of hard work by the Janney Community made for a very successful event this year. We wanted to thank ALL the volunteers who manned the stations, made the bakery items, created tie-dye shirts, supervised the rides, worked the crafts and cakewalks, painted tattoos, face painted, and everything else that made the day a resounding success. A huge thank you for the organizers of Fall Carnival who worked tirelessly and displayed amazing patience with all the delays to bring off a fantastic afternoon: Jennie Bonney, Melissa Meierhoefer, Karen Harris and Diane Schiff. Great job.
We also wanted to thank Rennie Anderson and Anita Seline for their work in publishing the PTA Directory. It looks great. Let the playdates commence!
The Book Fair is coming up at Politics & Prose on Connecticut Avenue this weekend. Purchase books and other items to benefit Janney all day Saturday the 31st and Sunday November 1st.
Please note the next PTA General Meeting is November 10 at 7:30 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room.
A reminder that the Janney Website has up-to-date news and information so pop by every once in a while to check it out at www.janneyschool.org.

Please come join your fellow library volunteers and the Janney librarians for coffee and a tour of the library on Wednesday, November 5 at 8:00 am. Even if you've already been active in the library, this will be a great way to meet other volunteers. For newcomers, join us to learn about how the library works and some of the many projects on which you can provide some help. We'll have coffee and great company. Bring the kids, too! They can show you what they've been doing in library class, and we'll have storytime for the younger ones. If you have any questions, contact Marla Viorst at viorst@wexlerwalker.com.

A Tip from Janney's new Health Foods Committee
Remember to thank our
lunch lady, Ms. Dixon, next time you see her. She is the friendly face
our children greet when they buy their lunches or chocolate milks. Last
spotted on pizza day handling the high demand. Thanks Ms. Dixon!
Also
spotted in the kids' lunch boxes from home: edamame, mango chunks with
a toothpick, and MELON BALLS! Yum.

Contributing to the E-Newsletter
All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.
Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an
attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included
in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active
(clickable).
If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.
Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.
We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
