Principal's Letter Vote! Vote! Vote!
Campaign posters decorated the hallways, speeches were prepared, and a rapt audience of second - fifth graders took in the ideas and campaign promises of our elite group of Student Council candidates before voting. Although the winners in each category are in BOLD, each candidate deserves to be enthusiastically celebrated for their hard work and dedication toward making Janney a better place:
President: Nicole Davies, Sydney Frazier, Shakeelah Jordan, Patrick Mulderig, Anya Navidi-Kasmai, Sarah Thompson, Nicolas Zimmerman Vice President: Akari Davidson, Meredith Ellison, Mica House, Brian G. Keyes, Alex Martin, Elena Remez, Ethan Rosenthal, Joey Schulman, Ben Schwartz, Tony Smole Parliamentarian: Emily Oliphant, Georgia Rosse, Isabel Suarez Recording Secretary: Abbey Korman, Gwen Tsai Corresponding Secretary: Sarah Burch, Addie Price, Franny Sewell, Olivia Viorst Treasurer: Rikyah Bell, Sophie Diabiase, Anasuya Lyons, Fiona Marone, Sam Masling, Ben Page, Ella Perrson, McCoy Sikes, Isabel Rosenthal, Nora Zich LSRT Rep: Coby Cohen, Jana Cohen
Celebration of the hard work of the Student Council Leaders - Ms. David, Ms. Brill and Ms. Hunter - are also in order, as well as a recognition of all those staff members who took the time to hang banners, approve posters, and encourage our students in their pursuits. I have asked for (and received) copies of all of the speeches; the good ideas are plentiful and I will be incorporating many of them in the coming months.
On a far more somber note, you are aware that DCPS budget cuts affected our school as of Friday, October 2nd. We held meetings for the classes that were directly impacted as well as for the wider Janney community on Sunday evening. Thank you to the many parents and staff members who shared their thoughts, questions and support. Although it is an undeniably difficult time, I would like to once again express my confidence that we will move forward and continue to build on our successes with our students as our highest priority. Please remember that if you have any questions you are encouraged to call or email.
Nurse Polk will be busy this week with Hearing and Vision Screenings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. She has also arranged for the annual Flu Shot Clinic to return on Wednesday, October 7th from 2:30 - 4:30. All staff, parents, and students (8 years and older, accompanied by an adult) are welcome.
Even though the Jamboree calendar is on the Janney website as usual, I wanted to highlight that Washington Mystics basketball player Monique Currie is scheduled to join us on Thursday - I know we are looking forward to her visit and another great week!
Sincerely,

A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
Just a couple items from us this week. Please make sure the Janney Fall Carnival is on your calendars for Saturday, October 17th. The times have changed; it will now be from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Also, the principal from Deal Middle School, Ms. Kim, will be talking about Deal and answering questions on Tuesday, October 20th at 6:00 pm in Janney's multipurpose room. In addition, dates have been selected for Janney's two open houses for interested parents: November 13th and March 12th. And finally, a big thanks to Nick Alten for arranging the repair of our broken soccer goal so quickly!
Thanks and have a great week!

Say Cheese: School Picture Day Friday, October 16
In an upcoming Take Home Tuesday envelope, parents will find an order form
from Lifetouch Pictures for students' school pictures. There are many picture
packages available, with options for different sizes, quantities, and photo
backgrounds. You can order your child's classroom photo too.
Childrens' photos will be taken for the Janney yearbook. However,
if you wish to buy your child's school pictures, the order form MUST be
completed and turned in to your child's teacher with payment (checks payable
to Lifetouch) no later than the start of school on Friday, October 16.
Extra order forms will be available in the main office. Please note:
The order form can be confusing. Please read the order information carefully
before making your selections!
For those children whose pictures don't turn out (or who are absent on
Picture Day), Retake Day is scheduled for November 19. REMEMBER: If you

Halloween Costume
Drive to Benefit the
National Center
for Children and Families
Is your son over his Star Wars phase?
Has your daughter moved on from princesses to Hannah Montana? Don't
know what to do with that fabulous Bakugan costume you made last year? Clean
out your closets and provide a happier Halloween for homeless children at the
Greentree Shelter in Bethesda .
Run by the National
Center for Children and
Families (http://www.nccf-cares.org), the
Greentree Shelter serves as a transitional home for approximately 70 homeless families, primarily
children with single mothers, and provides the basic support systems necessary
for families to rebuild their lives. This year, Janney is trying to
provide some of the nearly 180 children at the shelter with costumes for Halloween.
Bring your gently used costumes to drop off on October 9, 15 and 22 (or drop
them off at 4828 Albemarle St. NW)
and make this Halloween special for a homeless child. If you have any
questions, or would like to volunteer to help collect costumes, please contact
Nancie Thomas at nthomas@conservation.org
or Maureen Leventhal. Thanks very much.

Contributing to the E-Newsletter
All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.
Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an
attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included
in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active
(clickable).
If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.
Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.
We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
