We all know Janney is full of wonderful children who learn, explore, and build friendships under the watchful, respectful care of an equally terrific staff.  Last Friday, over 70 families (close to 100 people!) attended our Fall Open House to take a look for themselves. It was quite a turn out, and it would not have been such a resounding success without the help of many, many people. First, a big thanks to Julie Hamlin and Karen Garman for taking the lead on the PTA side of things. Without them, we wouldn't have had fantastic publicity, parent volunteers, or refreshments for our visitors. Next, thanks to Ms. Tawana Franklin and her amazing Safety Patrol and Student Council students. No offense parent volunteers, but it is really the students who make the event special, "selling" the school by sharing some of their wonderful experiences over the years at Janney. Many of our visitors commented on their poise and their knowledge of Janney.  Let's just say, our students made a positive impression!

Earlier in the week, we had a SIT meeting, where discussion and review of the final stages of the schematic design took place. A community meeting will take place in early to mid December to reveal final plans and get community feedback. Meeting information will be published as soon as OPEFM confirms the date.

Immediately following SIT, the PTA held its bi-monthly meeting. About twenty parents and staff attended. Instructional Coaches Karen Langford and Beth McClung presented information about how math and reading assessments are being used in the classrooms and reported to parents this year, and I discussed some of the key points around the DC-BAS test and report cards. This session was followed by an update about SIT and upcoming fundraisers. Then Karen Harris shared information about the redesign of Janney's website, with a target completion date of April. Parent, staff, and student surveys will be coming out shortly to determine the needs of the all Janney stakeholders as the new design gets underway. If you have any ideas, or better yet, expertise in the field of web design that you'd like to share, contact Karen Harris at karenh@gmail.com.

On the instructional side, I met with grade-level teams this week to discuss the use of assessments and data analysis as a means to drive purposeful decision making around curriculum choices, unit and lesson planning, and determining instructional strategies.  The upper grades (3-5) will be looking at recent DC-BAS data in addition to classroom assessments as they move forward with their data analysis work.

This week, the LSRT meets on Tuesday to continue work around the Local School Plan. The SIT Facilities Committee meets on Thursday at 5:30 for design and at 6:00 for the whole SIT to gather final comments. Report cards come home in Take Home Tuesday, and make-up picture day is this Thursday.

On Saturday, Janney students and parents can take advantage of free student tickets to the American University Men's Basketball game, which begins at noon. You received information regarding the purchase of additional tickets in the Take Home Tuesday folders (two weeks ago).

Saturday is also Family Volunteer Day. For ideas about what you can do with your family to make a difference check out The National Children's Museum at http://www.ncm.museum/home/news/family-volunteer-day for ideas that take place not only through the museum, but through other organizations in the DC Metro area.

Have a fantastic week of learning, Jaguars!
Sincerely,
Picture Retake Day Is Almost Here
Thursday, November 19

If you ordered photos, you should have received your child's Janney School picture (provided Lifetouch took a photograph of your child on October 16th) in your child's backpack. We hope your child was looking her/his best and that you enjoy the photos.

Or, perhaps you are not impressed by the likeness to your child's good looks. Perhaps you're even trying to figure out if this is indeed a picture of the child who lives in your house! Maybe he's trying his best "Alien Face," which isn't your favorite look. Or, she thought she'd surprise you with a new hairstyle she coiffed during lunch. Maybe your child wasn't at Picture Day because he or she was on your fall Caribbean vacation, or, home with the season's threatening virus. If this was the case, mark Thursday, November 19 on your calendar for Picture Retake Day!

If you would like your child's picture taken on Retake day, please email janneyschoolphotos@gmail.com. We will have Lifetouch take the picture the morning of November 19. If you are having your child's picture retaken, you must return your unsatisfactory package (minus the class picture) to the classroom teacher before retake day. There is no charge for the retake when you return the less-than-desirable photo.

If this is your child's first photo, make sure you complete an order form with payment for the photo package that you would like. The order forms are in the PTA cabinet in the Janney front office. Also, you can order photos if you contact Lifetouch here: www.lifetouch.com.

If you have any questions, please contact us. Thank you!

Soup Kitchen News
New Date: Tuesday, November 24

The soup kitchen will be the 4th Tuesday this month (November 24) instead of the 4th Wednesday, so as not to compete with families preparing for Thanksgiving. Volunteers will be contacted by phone about what to bring. All food items need to be in the lobby by 9:00 a.m. on Soup Kitchen day. Classroom teachers and room parents please remember if this is your month to bring salad fixings, desserts, or snacks. Call me if you have any questions: 362-7555. Thanks so much, Camille Martone

Notes from the Health Suite

Dear Janney Community,

Our Cold and Flu Season is well underway. Consider keeping your child home if he or she has:
-A fever
-Been vomiting or has diarrhea
-Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite
-Productive coughing, sneezing
-Headache, body aches, earache
-Sore throat

A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat in children are headache and stomach upset. Contact your pediatrician as your child needs a special test to determine if it is strep throat.

Students with confirmed streptococcal infections should not return to school until they have been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours and are without fever for 24 hours. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and expose others unnecessarily to illness.

Does my child have the flu? The flu is serious! Call your pediatrician at the first sign of flu symptoms, which typically come on suddenly, including:
-High fever
-Chills
-Head ache, body aches, ear ache
-Nausea, vomiting
-Dry cough

If you're unsure about the best way to treat your child's cold or flu, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider.

How do I make my child feel better? Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and put limits on TV watching. Encourage fluid like water, soup, juice and ice. Help your child relax by reading him/her a story and giving him plenty of TLC. Consider using a cool humidifier.

PLEASE REPORT ALL CONTAGIOUS ILLNESSES TO THE SCHOOL NURSE. An absence of three or more days or a diagnosis of a contagious condition require medical clearance to return to school. Keep your child home until his or her fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication. Thank you for your cooperation and good health to all!

All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.

Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active (clickable).

If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.

Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.

We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
