lycknell photoPrincipal's Letter

Last week, we wrapped up Cycle 1 of the new IMPACT evaluation system, which served to confirm what we already knew: we have a terrific staff at Janney! We are using the data from the process to identify growth areas to target as we move forward with our Local School Plan, which the LSRT discussed at last Tuesday's meeting.

Another issue addressed at last week's LSRT meeting was School Safety. Please look for an additional safety note in this week's Take Home Tuesday packet that relays that discussion, as well as other current safety notices that affect our community.

Thursday was photo make-up day, and thanks to Amy Morrill-Bijeau and Angela Johnson, students and staff alike were able to get picture retaken with a minimal disruption to the school day. Now that all members of our community have their individual pictures taken, it is time for club, team, whole school and candid photos, scheduled after Thanksgiving Break on December 1st and 2nd.

On Saturday, many Janney students and family members came out for the 3rd Annual Janney ES Day at American University, where they not only got to see the AU men's basketball team play, but also saw their 4th and 5th grade Janney peers perform a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Janney families made up quite a cheering section! We extend our thanks to Ms. Brudnick.

In this shortened week, many classrooms are focusing on giving thanks, whether at Jamboree, through writing, or through classroom discussion. On Tuesday November 24th, the Notebusters chorus will have a double show, one for Janney students at 9:30am, and the other for the whole community at 7:30pm at Hardy Middle School. Tuesday is also Buddy Day for our fifth graders, who will visit Alice Deal Middle School.

I have much to be thankful for at Janney - the curiosity of our students, the leadership of our staff, and the support of our families. I wish you a safe and restful holiday, and am eager to share stories of tradition and togetherness upon our return next week.

Sincerely,
Notebusters Concert TONIGHT (Tues, Nov 24)
    7:30pm, Hardy MS

Notebusters presents:  "365 Ways to Give Thanks" -- a tribute to Thanksgiving with the music of Three Dog Night performed by guest artists from the US Army Blues, Band, and Chorus, plus our own NOTEBUSTERS and NOTEBOOMERS from Janney School joined by the NOTEBUSTERS from Horace Mann.  It's going to be a REALLY BIG SHOW!  Come enjoy -- bring family and friends.  Hardy Middle School, Wisconsin Avenue and 35th Streets at 7:30.

Art Club Wednesday, Nov. 25th

Adopt a Staff Member for the Holidays!

To show our staff just how much we appreciate their hard work for our school and our children, the PTA Staff Appreciation Committee is offering an opportunity to "adopt" a staff member for the holidays!

This fun program will run from Monday, December 7th until the start of Winter Break on Friday, December 18th. Each family that signs up will be randomly assigned to a staff member until all are adopted! What a terrific way to reach out, show your support, and perhaps even get to know someone new.

So how does it work? Once you've signed up, you receive your staff member's name and questionnaire about the member and likes.  that s/he completed about themselves and some of their likes. Just give your staff member some special attention during the holidays, maybe using an idea from their questionnaire as the basis. This can mean a one-time gift, a daily card, a weekly homemade treat, a surprise delivery of coffee, a gift card, a candy gram - you get the idea! It's not necessary to spend a lot of money - just be thoughtful and creative. You can even get your kids involved as a great way to show respect and appreciation for all that our staff does! If you prefer to remain anonymous, there will be a box in the front office to place labeled gifts for same-day delivery.

Please email Sam Corrigan at scorrigan4@gmail.com no later than Monday, November 30th if you would like to participate. You will receive the name and details of your adoptee by Friday, December 4th via email. You can start the fun any time after Monday, December 7th!

Thanks for supporting our staff! Please let us know if you have any
questions! Many thanks,
Sam Corrigan and Kelly Lee, Co-Chairs, Staff Appreciation Committee
Fantastic Book Fair Results!

The receipts have been tallied and we can proudly report that this year's Janney Book Fair at Politics & Prose was a fundraising success.  Despite the holiday weekend and all the competing Halloween and fall activities, we earned a total of $2,202.23 for Janney, which was slightly more than we made last year.  In addition, we filled the classrooms and the library with favorite books selected by Janney teachers, staff, and students and purchased by our wonderful families and community.  And we had a very fun time doing it - no wonder our volunteer spots fill up so fast every year!

Thanks very much to Politics & Prose and to everyone who participated, helped out and supported the Book Fair.

Best wishes,

Erica Perl and Alexis Comrack

Young Suffragists Meeting Friday Dec. 4, 3:30pm

Greetings Young Suffragists! It has been a while since our last program and though we have not seen many of you since summer, we hope you are ready to join us for some new, exciting Young Suffragists programs for the 2009-2010 school year!

To kick things off, we will be meeting on Friday, December 4th from 3:30 - 4:30 at Janney Elementary School (4130 Albemarle Street, NW Wasington, DC -- just next door to Tenley Metro) in Ms. Brill's room (2nd floor).

What will we do?  We will have a hand's on activity, some snacks and some good catching up.  We would like to hear from you about some of your favorite programs from the past, new areas of interest for you as well as share with you some of our ideas for programs this coming school year -- including learing more about the third branch of our goverment -- the Judicial branch -- our court system! How does the Judicial branch figure into the historic efforts to get representation in our Nation's Capitol?  Do you know?  Can we find out?  YES, we can!

Spread the word!  Invite your pals!  The more the merrier!  Check out the website, www.youngsuffragists.org and get ready for an awesome 8th year of making a difference in our unique city! A little snack will be provided.

Any questions, please e-mail Jenny or Jane at youngsuffragists@gmail.com. We can't wait to see you on the 4th!  Jenny and Jane, DC Young Suffragists
