lycknell photoPrincipal's Letter

Last week we experienced a quiet, smooth transition back from Thanksgiving Break thanks to the consistent expectations our staff members have established and our students have respectfully expressed, reiterating the value of Responsive Classroom and Positive Behavior Systems implementation.

A big thanks goes out to Cynthia Schiffrin and Rennie Anderson for organizing and supporting last Tuesday's Candid Picture Day and Wednesday's Club Photos Day. We also thank staff and students for their flexibility both days, which resulted in minimal disruptions to the academic day.

We celebrated Spirit Day on Friday by wearing our favorite color. Stay tuned for upcoming Spirit Day themes, and remember, all other Fridays are Blue and White Days in celebration of our Janney Pride. Also on Friday, the PK/K classes ventured off campus to see a production of The Nutcracker at Glen Echo Park, including life-sized puppets to enliven the classic holiday tale.

This week, we held Parent/Teacher Conferences on Monday from 12 - 7. Thank you to our families and staff members for engaging in important conversations around our students' progress. As we continue to prioritize constant reflection, please help us by completing this electronic survey by Saturday, December 12: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JZ99YRH.

Even though there were no classes on Monday, many students were on campus rehearsing for Geology Rocks! (there is an evening performance for parents, family, and friends this Wednesday at 6:30 in the Multipurpose Room) and for the school musical, being held in February.

Multiple meetings will be held Tuesday evening, starting with a Janney SIT meeting at 5:45, followed by an OPEFM/Janney SIT meeting at 6:15. The PTA holds its meeting at 7:30 in the Multipurpose Room, with discussions around the modernization, assessments (led by Dr. Langford and Ms. McClung), and extracurricular events on the agenda.

On Saturday, check out the wares on sale during the Student Council-sponsored Winter Fair from 10:00 to 1:30. Orders for the PTA-organized citrus sale can also be retrieved at this time.

On to another fantastic week, Jaguars!
Sincerely,
A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

A few reminders as we near the end of the year. Tonight is the last PTA meeting of 2009. We'll be meeting at 7:30 in the Multipurpose Room for an update on the Janney addition and modernization, a presentation from our math and literacy specialists, and a discussion of extracurricular activities.

At the December 15th 6:00 pm community meeting, we will get a full update from OPEFM about the details of the planned expansion and modernization. This is your opportunity to ask OPEFM and the architects detailed questions about the design and timetable.

Thanks and have a great week!

Geology Rocks! Musical

Janney's Geology Rocks! musical is this Wednesday December 9 at 6:30 in the Multipurpose Room. Professor Rock, a beloved geology professor, has disappeared! His students search high and low, singing their way through interviews with potential witnesses, racing against Detective Sherlock Holmes, and learning about geology along the way until the mystery is solved. Janney Pre-K-3rd graders will see the show on Tuesday during the school day. All are welcome to attend the performance Wednesday night.

PTA Citrus Fruit Delivery/Distribution

If you ordered Indian River Groves citrus fruit through the PTA, please pick your order up at Janney during the Winter Fair, on Saturday, December 12, between 10:00 am and 1:30 pm. The distribution table and order lists will be on the stage in the gym. If you absolutely cannot make this time, please contact Allison Scuriatti at ascuriatti@gmail.com.
Janney Merchandise Makes Great Holiday Gifts

Now is the time to stock up on some great Janney merchandise for yourself or as gifts for the Holidays. The following overstock items --all with Janney logos-- are available now: golf umbrellas ($20 each or 2/$30), child baseball caps in navy or white ($10 each) and aluminum water bottles ($10 each). The PBA- free plastic water bottles are not available at this time but will be re-ordered for future purchase. If you are interested in purchasing any items, please contact Kelly Lee at krlee123@yahoo.com. Items will be sold on a first come/first served basis. Thank you.

Art Club

Due to the tremendous response this fall there will be a second session of Art Club starting on Wednesday, January 6 at 3:15-4:30 pm in the art room. Please sign up in advance if your son or daughter is interested by emailing emilystrulson@hotmail.com as space is limited. Please include pick-up instructions as well. This is an 8 week session ending on Wed., Feb 24. Parent volunteers are welcome and Art Club is a free community event.

Children's Art Studio Winter Camps
The Children's Art Studio is a local nonprofit founded on the belief that children reap tremendous emotional, intellectual and developmental gains from making art. We were founded in 2007 but have just secured a new, beautiful studio at 4737 Wisconsin Avenue, a short walk away from Janney. Please come join us for Winter Camps, Saturday Workshops and full day classes on the days when DCPS is closed to students.

Email childrensartstudio@gmail.com with questions and to sign up.

Contributing to the E-Newsletter

All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.

Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active (clickable).

If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.

Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.

We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
