Principal's Letter Last week
started off with our first Parent Conference of the year when teachers
and parents came together to discuss academic and social progress as
well as goals for the coming months. In effort to improve the
conference process, I remind you to complete a brief survey at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JZ99YRH. We will continue to collect responses through December 18th with the
results and corresponding actions shared in my first letter after the
break. The conversation around academic expectations continued at our
PTA meeting on Tuesday. Following Karen Langford's encore presentation
of Everyday Mathematics assessment information, several questions arose
regarding the DCPS and Janney curricula, rigor, and comparisons to the
standards of surrounding schools and districts. I will address these
topics at my first Principal's Coffee of the new year on Wednesday,
January 6th at 8am. If this conversation interests you, please mark
your calendars now.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, actors in our lower school musical, Geology
Rocks, impressed us with two phenomenal performances. Thanks to
Director Karen Harris and the many parents who helped with music,
costumes and rehearsals for getting our volcanoes, ferns, rocks,
earths, seas, professors and detectives ready to grace the stage.
We closed out the week with the annual Student Council winter fair.
The multipurpose room and hallways filled with tempting goods and
wares like jewelry, clothing, baseball cards and crafts. Thanks to our
lead Student Council advisor Nichole David-Martinez (and the fabulous
clean-up crew that included Shana Zallman and Heather Roy), student
council members, all those who purchased tables, and the many shoppers
for making the event a resounding success. The PTA also distributed
the fruit from the Citrus Sale; we appreciate Allison Scuriatti and her
committee for organizing this fundraiser, and all those who contributed
to our community by purchasing fruit!
That fruit will make another appearance this Wednesday as the Healthy
Foods Committee leads our second lunchtime taste test. Students will
have a chance to sample various citrus fruits as part of a larger
conversation around nutrition and the importance of local produce. In
other events this week, each of our fourth grade classes will visit the
Natural History museum, the Winter Concert will take place on Thursday
at 7pm in the multipurpose room, and students will assemble for our
annual Holiday Sing Along at 9am on Friday. I look forward to all of
our voices coming together to celebrate the season.
One last reminder: the Office of Public Education Facilities
Modernization will host a community meeting on Tuesday, December 15th
at 6pm in the multipurpose room. Plans similar to those posted on the
Janney website and the community bulletin board on the first floor will
be discussed, with time for questions and comments. Please consider
submitting those questions and comments in advance by emailing janneydesigncomments@yahoo.com
(SIT team members will have access to this account) or by dropping them
in the comments envelope next to the bulletin board.
Enjoy the last few weeks of 2009 - see you in 2010!
Sincerely,

MEDICATION POLICY
I would like to offer a friendly reminder about DCPS policy
related to medication administration.
If your child has a chronic condition/problem or may
experience an emergency condition that requires the administration of
medication during the school day, please note:
(1) A completed
parent/guardian authorization and physician order must be on file for
each medication A copy of this form may be found on the DCPS website or
you may request a form from the main office.
(2) A new
form must be submitted for each new school year.
(3) Prescription
medication must be in an appropriate container and labeled by a registered
pharmacist with a current date.
(4) Over
the counter medication must be in an appropriate container with
manufacturer's original label and the safety seal must be intact (a
medication order must be on file for all over the counter medication as
well).
(5) Please
do not send medications of any kind in your child's backpack or lunch for
self administration.
(6) Medications
and consent forms may be brought to the Health Suite or given to Ms Laverne
Green in the front office.
Thank you for your cooperation. --
HEALTHY HOLIDAY TIPSThink Healthy Thoughts
Spend time before the holidays planning healthy snacks, appetizers, meals, and desserts to prepare. Make a grocery list
and stick to it. Whether you are a host or guest, be the one to create
healthy alternatives to the typically not-so-healthy holiday menu.
Rock the Halls
With the holiday season also comes lots of fun music,
so get the family physically active by turning up those holiday tunes
and dancing-anything that keeps the kids moving and having fun. If it's
impossible to pry your family away from those holiday TV specials,
encourage them to do jumping jacks, sit-ups, and push-ups during commercial breaks.
Don't Forget Rest
Don't forget to add sleep and relaxation to the holiday to-do list.
Staying well rested not only provides an extra boost of energy, it also
helps keep you from overstuffing yourself. Studies have shown that lack of sleep
directly affects the amount of energy you have, your appetite, and your
ability to maintain a healthy weight; in fact, getting enough sleep can
decrease your chances of becoming overweight.
Snack, Don't Skip
Just like any other day, you shouldn't skip meals during the
holidays. It is not a good approach to cut calories by cutting meals
from the day. Not eating breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner may lead to
overeating at holiday meal times. Keep normal eating times and if you
do happen to skip a meal try to snack on healthy foods to keep you from starving and then stuffing.
** WISHING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A SAFE AND HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON **

Contributing to the E-Newsletter
All submissions to the PTA newsletter should be emailed to Janneynewsletter@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is Friday at 3:15 pm. Because the newsletter is reviewed by several individuals before distribution, we must adhere to this deadline in order to get the newsletter to you every week on time.
Please include all text in the body of your email (rather than as an
attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included
in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active
(clickable).
If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.
Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. If you have prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope, those should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.
We will run notices about community or other non-Janney events of interest to elementary school children as space permits. It is the PTA's policy not to carry for-profit advertisements or classifieds. Thank you for your cooperation.
