Dear Janney Families,

We ended last week celebrating the results of our Haiti Bake and Bead Sale fundraiser during which we collected over $1,000 to support the victims of the Haiti earthquake via the MercyCorps organization.  We extend our gratitude to Fran Brennan, Maureen Leventhal, Shana Zallman, the many parent volunteers, and all those who contributed for their commitment to this important event. Continuing the celebrations, I also had a chance to deliver balloons to each of our third-fifth grade classes to recognize the tenacity, dedication and hard work of our students and teachers as displayed by our significant growth on the recent DC-BAS interim testing.

This week our Jamboree focus will be around the values of equity and determination. We will recognize the beginning of Black History Month by sharing the story of the Greensboro Four, and will continue to highlight key events in our shared history through class presentations, classroom lessons and assemblies throughout this month and beyond. The PTA Executive Board will meet on Tuesday evening when we will discuss, among other topics, revising our pick-up and drop-off procedures; the Janney SIT team will meet on Wednesday evening to confer around construction phasing and staging plans for the modernization, still slated to begin in early March.  Please look for a modernization FAQ packet to be posted on the website and included in Take Home Tuesday folders next week, including information about how we will maximize play space. On Friday, we will close the week with Janney Career Day when we will invite a range of current and former Janney family members and representatives from a variety of fields to share their professional work with our students.

Using the rest of my space in this week's letter, I would like to provide a review and update of two Janney policies: recess and pick-up/drop-off.  Although the general recess policies are stated in the parent handbook (sent home at the beginning of the year and posted on the Janney website), it is important to share how those policies have manifested into actions this year. The official DCPS standard for indoor recess is when temperatures drop below freezing; however, our acting policy is that outdoor recess will occur as long as the temperature is above the teens and the wind chill is above single digits. Students will also attend outdoor recess in the case of light precipitation, but downpours, thunderstorms, heavy winds or icy conditions will result in indoor recess. The field is technically open for recess, but has only been usable on a few days this year; we will make sure that OPEFM helps to remediate the field so that we have full use of that space during the modernization.  Please be reminded that students must have adequate outdoor clothing (warm coats, hats, gloves, etc.) in order to be permitted to join us at outdoor recess.

As many of you have observed, we have experienced increased congestion at drop-off and pick-up times on Albemarle and 42nd Street.  In order to alleviate this congestion and create a clear plan, several parents, our safety patrol lead and I have met with a representative from DDOT. We are currently in the information-gathering phase and are sourcing observations, listserv suggestions, and conversations with parents (to add to the conversation or to join the planning team, please feel free to email janneydesigncomments@yahoo.com). We will use the start of the modernization construction as our deadline for having a new plan fully in swing; please stay tuned for more information throughout February.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions.  Have a fantastic week Jaguars!
Sincerely,
The Jungle Book

Mark your calendars and tell all your friends! On February 19th and 20th at Hardy Middle School, the Janney Players will proudly present the musical The Jungle Book

Based on the book by Rudyard Kipling and the classic Disney movie and directed by the incomparable Ginny Curtin, The Jungle Book is more fun than a barrel of monkeys! Journey with us to the jungle and learn about "The Bear Necessities" of life from Mowgli the jungle child, Bagheera the wise panther, Baloo the fun-loving bear, the swinging ape King Louie, Colonel Hathi the elephant and all their jungle friends. Bagheera thinks it is time for Mowgli to return to civilization. But is he ready? And what if he meets Kaa the snake or Shere Khan the tiger on the way?

"Trust in us" - with toe-tapping tunes, dynamic dancing and an all-star cast of talented Janney 4th and 5th graders, The Jungle Book will be a musical to remember! This is a great show for all ages and the perfect destination for a birthday group or gathering. Tickets are $5 general admission, $15 reserved, and will be available at Janney beginning February 16.

Jungle Book Volunteers Needed

Hey, you-oo-oo!  You wanna be like uh-uh-us?  Volunteer to help out with The Jungle Book!

We're still looking for a few good parents to help out with various small tasks to help get our jungle jumping. That's what friends are for, right?  Plus, the more helpers we have, the better the show!

For more information, please email Kate LaGuarda or Erica Perl .

Thank You Janney Bakers!

And Janney eaters and Janney sellers! Our Haiti bake sale raised more than $1,100 for the Mercycorps organization, and we couldn't have done it without the help of so many people. It would be impossible to name all the great parents and kids who baked, helped sell, bought, or simply donated to the cause. We are grateful to all of you. But we couldn't have done it without the guiding hand of Maureen Leventhal, the boundless energy of Diane Schiff and Katherine Martin, and the many student council members who staffed our sales tables. The cold was no match for Janney determination. Many, many thanks to all. --Fran Brennan
