Principal's Letter

Dear Janney Families,

I am endlessly grateful for the support, input and dedication of our parent community, but your tireless work really stood out last week. Parent volunteer proctors helped us to successfully administer the DC-BAS, the SIT team continued planning for construction, families joined us for a PTA meeting discussing the modernization, Julie Hamlin and Karen Garman (along with several other fabulous tour guides) led our spring Open House for prospective and current families, and Jenny Craig, countless volunteers and shoppers provided us with a great rainy weekend activity with the Used Book Sale on Saturday. In case I do not say it enough, thank you!

This week we will have an LSRT meeting on Tuesday (March 16th at 6:00pm), will act as hosts to the ANC3a meeting on Thursday night, and Stefan Fatsis will host a Janney Scrabble Tournament on Saturday. At Jamboree on Tuesday and Friday, our safety patrol team will poll the student body about the types of transportation they use to get to school.  This effort will help to inform our team's transition to a more effective drop-off (and ultimately pick-up) procedure. For more information on the current plan and an opportunity to provide feedback, please see the printed description that I will send home in the Take Home Tuesday folder. Also in that folder will be a Frequently Asked Questions packet around the modernization. Because of the importance of both of these documents, I have chosen to provide paper copies; however, updated versions will be regularly posted to the Janney website. Over the next five days we will even witness the first steps of construction, as foundations will be poured for moving the JED and Music demoutables to the field over spring break. The schedule and drawings for this work are on the front doors, in the main office, and posted to the website.

One last reminder: we do have school on Friday - the scheduled professional development day will be a regular school day for students as we take the first step in making up February's snow days.

Have a phenomenal week Jaguars!
Sincerely,
A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

Well, we are entering the final stretch of the school year, with Spring Break almost upon us. There are still quite a few events coming up, including Janney's Wild! on April 16th, Spring Picnic on May 21st, the Spring Plant Sale, and much more.

We owe an enormous thank you to Jenny Craig, Marjie Thompson-Longshore, Mary O'Lone, Tracy Scarrow, Theresa Wiegmann, Karen Martin, Stacey Marien, and Amanda Barlow who planned and ran the Used Book Sale this past weekend. Not only did the event raise $1,600 (through sale of books and baked goods), but we also identified hundred of books for the Janney Library, and will be donating hundreds of books to the Webb-Wheatley school library and the MLK main DC library downtown. Thank you too to Anne Prince and Kim Curtis who led the bake sale effort.

We also had a very successful open house last Friday, and we appreciate everyone's support and assistance.

Tickets will be available for Janney's Wild! soon, so please make sure you have your babysitters lined up. This year's Janney's Wild! will be on the Potomac River in Georgetown at the architecturally stunning House of Sweden. Make sure you join us for a great night of casino gaming, silent and live auctions, music and dancing, and drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

Thanks very much to everyone for making Janney a great community.

Thanks for Making the Used Book and Bake Sale A Success!
books

Many thanks to all of you for your donations of books and baked goods.  With your help, we:
  • Raised more than $1,600 for the PTA.
  • Provided more than 600 books to the Janney library (value of $3,000+).  By sorting donations before the sale, we tripled the size of the pre-reader collection and doubled the Star Wars collection.
  • Provided more than 100 books to Deal Middle School (value of $1,000+).
  • Donated approximately 400 children's books to Webb-Wheatley Elementary school .
  • Donated two minivans-full of leftover books to the DC Public Library.
  • Cleared out your bookshelves and helped restock them with "new" books!
There are many people who made this event happen.  A special thanks for those who helped to organize and run the sale: Marjie Thompson-Longshore, Mary O'Lone, Tracy Scarrow, Theresa Wiegmann, Stacey Marien, Karen Martin, Kim Curtis, and Amanda Barlow. Thanks also go out to Anne Prince and Kim Curtis who, with the help of Brownie Troop 2625 and Daisy Troop 949, made the bake sale a delicious addition to the day.  We are also grateful for the many volunteers who helped set up and work at the sale: Nicky Goren, Samine Irigoien, Dianne Bock, Valerie Alten, Angela Johnson, Samar Burney, Lisa Wackler, Julie Slattery, Melissa Fossberg, Pippa Trench, Michelle Brotzman, Mike Lee, David Easler, Monica Sarmiento, and Allison Scuriatti.  And thanks to Mr. Adams, Ms. Sell, Ms. Kerwin and Glen Sitney and others at JED for helping out, too!

Attendance and Tardiness

A reminder to all families: please call in before 9:00 am if your child is ill.  Send a note upon returning to school indicating the reason for the absence. Absences are excused for illness, medical treatment or emergency, death of a member of the family, court appearances if a child is required to attend, and religious holidays. If a child is ill for more than three (3) days, a physician's note is needed clearing your child to return to school. Absences due to travel have to be submitted to the principal, in writing, prior to the travel for approval. Any unapproved absences will result in an unexcused absence. Ten (10) unexcused absences can result in a referral to Child and Family Services. Fifteen (15) absences can result in a referral to court for educational neglect.  We thank all of our families for their support as we work to adhere to the DCPS attendance policy and to maximize our students' learning time.

Also, please make sure to get your child to school on time. School starts with the Jamboree at 8:40 am.  Students are late when they arrive after 8:50 am. Help your child develop the good habit of arriving  to school on time so they can settle in with their class. It is an important for their academic life and it becomes increasingly more important as they grow.    Thank you again for your support in making the effort to get your child to school on time.
Notice: Construction on the Field

You will notice this week that the Albemarle side of the Janney field will
be fenced off. Construction crews will be building 2 concrete platforms
that will house 2 demountables during Phase I of the construction project.
The music and JED/special education demountables will be moved onto these platforms on the field over spring break. The construction crew will also build pathways to and from these demountables to the eastern door of the Janney building.

To view a picture of the demountable moving plan, visit the home page of the Janney website and scroll down to "Janney Addition and Modernization and Related Project News."

There you will also find a brief description of Phases I and II of the
project for those of you who could not attend the PTA meeting last week.
