Parents and teachers have spent a day meeting (help keep us on track and give us your feedback: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7NT33MM, now we return for a week that begs completing.  Alas, the floors are waxed, and our students are relaxed as I sit down to write you this greeting.

Although I would like to take on the endeavor of writing this week's entire newsletter in rhyme, I thought it might be a bit clearer if I stuck to standard syntax; nonetheless, we will begin the week by celebrating one of history's greatest rhymesters, Dr. Seuss.  For Read Across America day (Tuesday, March 2nd), we will read aloud, share books, dress up and come together for an evening read-in  - and if we are lucky, a few Dr. Seuss characters will join us for the festivities.  To accommodate the read-in. The PTA Exec Board meeting will be delayed until this Wednesday at 7:30pm.  We also have two upcoming opportunities to discuss the modernization, slated to begin over Spring Break: a Principal's Coffee beginning at 8am this Wednesday and a PTA meeting next Tuesday at 7:30pm.  The SIT team will specifically address staging plans, use of play space amd any questions from participants.  Also coming up are the Open House for prospective Janney families on March 12th and next weekend's Used Book Sale (March 13th).

On another scheduling note, DCPS has evaluated several options for making up the four February snow days and has identified additional student days in our schedule:

- March 19 will convert from a Professional Development day to a regular instruction day.
- May 17, a parent-teacher conference day will now be a regular instruction day. DCPS will work with schools to ensure that teachers and parents schedule time to talk about summer learning and end-of-year topics during late May.
- June 18, a current half day will convert into a full regular instruction day.
- June 21 and June 22, our designated make up days, will be used as full regular instruction days.
- The last day of school for students and teachers is June 22.
- Summer school begins Monday, June 28.

The full description of the plan can be found here: http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/About+DCPS/Press+Releases+and+Announcements/Press+Releases/DCPS+Releases+Snow+Make+Up+Calendar+for+the+2009-2010+School+Year

Finally, at the suggestion of several parents and faculty members, I have clarified our policy around student and chaperon purchases on field trips.  In order to ensure equitable experiences and to preserve our students' focus on the purpose of the trip, I ask that families do not send money on field trips and that chaperons do not purchase treats for their groups.  There are two exceptions: one, should all chaperones determine they would like to treat all students, they are welcome but certainly not expected to do so.  Two, students will be permitted to bring money on out-of-town field trips (such as the annual fourth-grade trip to Jamestown) as those experiences are more unique and make a repeat gift-shop trip less likely.  Thanks you for joining our faculty and staff in supporting this policy meant to ensure a better field trip experience for all.

At this time I have finished my part, but I do have one last thought to impart.  I cannot help but take the opportunity to wish a wonderful week to you.

Sincerely,
PTA-Hosted Meeting on Expansion & Modernization

On Tuesday, March 9th at 7:30 pm the PTA will host an update and discussion on our soon-to-start Expansion and Modernization.  This meeting is intended for the Janney Community to hear the latest and ask any questions.  Representatives of the SIT will be available to answer questions.  We will meet in the multi-purpose room.

Thanks and have a great week!

Janney Spring Open House

Janney will host its spring Open House on Friday, March 12th at 9:30 a.m.  The Open House will include student/parent led tours and presentations by Ms. Lycknell and the PTA. A Q&A session will follow.  Please let prospective Janney families know about this event.

In addition, we still need parents to co-lead the tours with students.  Parents tour leaders will start with an informational meeting at 8:45 on the morning of the open house, and will then co-lead a tour group of prospective parents.  Please contact Julie Hamlin (jhamlink@aol.com) or Karen Garman (karen.garman4@gmail.com) if you are able to volunteer.

Calling All High Rollers-Janney's Wild is April 16th!

Mark your Calendars for April 16th, 2010, for the second annual Janney's Wild! fundraiser for Janney Elementary at the House of Sweden in Georgetown.

What is Janney's Wild!, you ask?  Only the most fun you'll have all year!  Janney's Wild! is an evening of casino-style gaming and auction-bidding with food, music, and dancing.  Your ticket gives you the chips (no monetary value) and the chance to try your luck at poker, roulette, blackjack, and other Vegas-style games.  The gaming is for entertainment purposes only, but we will award prizes for the top three winners at the end of the evening.  Best of all, the proceeds of Janney's Wild will help fund a variety of programs at Janney.

The Janney's Wild! committee is also looking for event sponsors.  Sponsorships are available on a number of different levels, and there's sure to be one to fit your budget.  All contributions are tax-deductible, and matching grants through your workplace are a great way to double, or even triple, your contribution to Janney.  For more information, please contact event chairs Dianne Bock at dibock@starpower.net or Karen Harris at karenh@gmail.com.

Don't forget to check this space every week for more information about Janney's Wild! as it develops!

2) Related to activities or programs that take place on Janney school grounds, or for specific Janney-sponsored events or programs;
3) From and for not-for-profit organizations (unless #1 and #2 above are satisfied, and approved by both PTA presidents); and

Inclusion in the newsletter is at the discretion of the newsletter editors, the PTA presidents, and the principal. Please include all text in the body of the email (rather than as an attachment).
