lycknell photoPrincipal's Letter

We start the week with another beautiful day; like me, I imagine many Janney families took advantage of the sun and warmth to connect with the outdoors once again.  There is nothing like that first break in winter, especially this one, to reenergize!

We started last week with parent conferences.  As I mentioned in last week's newsletter, I have posted a survey to collect feedback from all stakeholders, with the new structure of having the opportunity to view student folders prior to the conference highlighted.  Please take a moment to respond survey - in order to collect as many responses as possible, the survey will remain open for one more week, with results shared in next week's letter.  I believe the original link did not work for everyone, so I have provided an alternative link here:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=sctVii9V7GD_2b7c8awg4ELA_3d_3d.

Our students were busy sharing their love for reading and presenting culminating projects.  Thanks to Lisa Wackler for leading our PreK - Third grades through a successful Read Across America day, both during school and for the evening read-in, and the Janney families who provided cupcakes to support Wheatley's celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday as well.  At Friday's Jamboree, Lauren Rockwell continued to build our community's love of reading and shared a special rendition of "Gotta Keep Reading" (to that infamous song, "I've Got a Feeling").  The link to the full video can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6D9jiEYxzs&sns=em
Our fourth and fifth graders spent part of Friday sharing the results of their respective projects.  The fourth grade held their Colonial Fair, an impressive mix of oral presentations, colonial games and foodstuffs, dancing and theatrical performances, highlighting the economies, politics, notable people, and religions of the colonies.  The fifth graders took a personal spin on their unit on immigration, representing a vast array of immigrant experiences, and in many cases their family history, through one-act plays.  I commend the teachers, paraprofessionals, and students for their breathtaking work.

I had the pleasure of hosting several parents for last week's principal's coffee around the modernization, slated to begin over spring break.  If you missed that chat, I invite you to attend this Tuesday's (March 9th at 7:30pm) PTA meeting which will also focus on the modernization.  It will be immediately following this month's SIT meeting (March 9th at 5:45pm), so we expect to arrive at the PTA meeting with updated information.  The PTA continues its vital work with the Used Book Sale on Saturday, March 13th from 10-2.  I know I am excited to have cleaned off my bookshelves for some new reads!

Also this week, our third-fifth graders will take the final round of DC-BAS tests, a critical snapshot of our students' strengths and growth areas in advance of the April DC-CAS.  On Friday, March 12th, we will host our Spring Open House.  Families considering Janney will have the opportunity to visit classrooms and speak with administrators and parents - new prospective parents, return visitors and/or families who have been accepted through the lottery process are welcome.

Have an extraordinary week, Jaguars!

Sincerely,
PTA-Hosted Meeting on Expansion & Modernization

On Tuesday, March 9th at 7:30 pm the PTA will host an update and discussion on our soon-to-start Expansion and Modernization.  This meeting is intended for the Janney Community to hear the latest and ask any questions.  Representatives of the SIT will be available to answer questions.  We will meet in the multi-purpose room.

Thanks and have a great week!

Janney Spring Open House

Janney will host its spring Open House on Friday, March 12th at 9:30 a.m.  The Open House will include student/parent led tours and presentations by Ms. Lycknell and the PTA. A Q&A session will follow.  Please let prospective Janney families know about this event.

In addition, we still need parents to co-lead the tours with students.  Parents tour leaders will start with an informational meeting at 8:45 on the morning of the open house, and will then co-lead a tour group of prospective parents.  Please contact Julie Hamlin (jhamlink@aol.com) or Karen Garman (karen.garman4@gmail.com) if you are able to volunteer.

Hüs Band is coming to Janney's Wild!  April 16th!

We are pleased to announce that local band and fan favorite Hüs Band will be playing at Janney's Wild! on April 16th at the House of Sweden in Georgetown.  Hüs Band bass player, Mike Kerwin, is a former Janney parent (and husband to our own awesome librarian, Malin Kerwin)!

But this band is no bunch of amateurs, mind you!  Hüs Band will keep us rockin' throughout the evening with a variety of material, both original and covers.  You will love their ripping good sound, and we dare you not to get down!   If you'd like to learn more about the band, or listen to some of their songs, you can check out their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/husbandrocks.

Janney's Wild is only a few short weeks away, so continue to watch this space for information about invitations and other great party information.  This is Janney's biggest fundraiser of the year, and you don't want to miss it.  Line up your babysitter NOW, and plan to try your luck and dance the night away at Janney's Wild!

1) For the benefit of Janney students;
2) Related to activities or programs that take place on Janney school grounds, or for specific Janney-sponsored events or programs;
3) From and for not-for-profit organizations (unless #1 and #2 above are satisfied, and approved by both PTA presidents); and
4) Submitted by an official representative of the organization or program referenced.

Inclusion in the newsletter is at the discretion of the newsletter editors, the PTA presidents, and the principal. Please include all text in the body of the email (rather than as an attachment). Small jpeg thumbnails may be attached and can be included in the newsletter. All links or email addresses will be made active (clickable).

If a notice should be run for more than one week, please indicate the dates the notice should be run, or resubmit the notice by the Friday deadline for each week.

Please note there is no longer a box in the Janney office where hard copy newsletter submissions can be turned in. Prepared fliers to be included in the Take Home Tuesday envelope should be turned into the school office by COB Monday.
