lycknell photoPrincipal's Letter

This last week of May is full of wonderful activities. Two fifth grade classes are making embassy visits this week: Ms. Osterman's class is headed to the Thai Embassy on Tuesday and Ms. Seward's class is headed to the Finnish Embassy on Thursday. Also on Thursday, fourth grader Akari Davidson will attend a luncheon celebrating her success as one of the 2010 class of 10 Who Are 10. Again, the whole community sends a big congratulations not only to her, but also to all the Janney students who submitted proposals and projects who will also be recognized by the competition's organizers. On Friday, second grader Madeline Kessler will be "Principal for a Day", an opportunity won at the Janney's Wild Auction. She has selected fellow second grader Sophie Schiff to be "Assistant Principal for a Day." I am sure they have a few surprises in store!  The other big event scheduled for Friday is the Talent Contest. Ms. David has been working hard to prepare students for the big day, and the excitement is starting to build.

Looking back to last week, we had several culminating events.  During last Thursday's Jump Rope 4 Heart, Mr. Kovacs lead Janney students through a variety of heart healthy activities. Suddenly, everyone wants jump rope added as a recess activity - if they need any jumping tips, they just need to check out the PK/Kindergarten as these students have been lining up to hop and skip for the last couple of weeks! Thursday evening the Janney Band and Orff Ensemble performed for a full house, after which everyone lined up to buy an ice cream sundae and to enjoy a post-concert performance by Janney alumni. On Friday we gathered for the Spring Picnic. Luckily, the rain held off just long enough for everyone to eat, socialize and for a lucky few, to win a fantastic raffle prize. The weekend came to a close with yet another terrific performance by the Notebusters, this time singing songs of Hairspray at the newly completed Alice Deal Middle School Auditorium. Thanks to all of the adults who supported these events, and to the students who worked so hard to show their talents.

Finally, a couple reminders and an update: don't forget, there's no school next Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Also, please read the note below about LSRT elections. The administration of DC Public Schools has been working hard to revise the LSRT guidelines in order to increase clarity and purpose. You can find a draft of those guidelines here under "first drafts": (http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/Parents+and+Community/Community+Initiatives/School+Advisory+Groups#2). Whether you are running for the LSRT (and we hope you are) or looking for a communication outlet, these guidelines are useful to understanding the refined role of the LSRT.
All the best for a great week,
A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  First of all, an enormous thank you to Melissa Meierhoefer and Alissa Lash for running one of the best raffles
Janney has seen in years. We had net revenue of nearly $13,500!  This is just an amazing amount, and a great tribute to Melissa, Alissa, and the entire Janney Community (special thanks to the wonderful room parents who helped sell tickets).

We also more than broke even on the picnic itself, and have made money on the merchandise and sportswear. We've seen lots of Janney umbrellas,
sweatshirts, and shorts around the neighborhood lately. Love it.

All this outpouring of support reminds us of what a great community we have. But something equally amazing has reminded us of Janney's spirit and character. Most of you know that there has been a concerted effort to find a donor for a young boy fighting leukemia in the area. There was a table at Janney's Spring Picnic Friday night, and between that effort and parallel efforts in the neighborhood to locate a donor, the Bone Marrow Registry reports an enormous increase of donor registrants. Thank you.

And finally, we are closing out the year with elections. At the PTA meeting on June 8th we'll be voting on the PTA Executive Board for next year.  And you'll see an announcement below about elections for the Janney LSRT. Please consider putting your name in and running.

Have a great week!
Help to Mold Janney's Future-Run for the LSRT

Elections will be held on June 10th and 11th to elect three new parent representatives to the Local School Restructuring Team (LSRT). The LSRT is an elected body that supports and advises the Principal on matters related to advancing student achievement and continuing to grow a school community that is focused on high expectations and high achievement for all students.

The LSRT consists of six parent representatives (three rotate off each year), 1 building representative (WTU) or designee, 5 teachers, and 1 non-instructional staff member.

The LSRT meets monthly, and holds additional meetings as needed.  A mandatory summer or fall training session will be held for all members.

The LSRT is seeking candidates who are willing to serve a two-year term; who represent the diversity of the Janney school community; and who share the following characteristics:

--They are already knowledgeable about much of what is occurring at school, or they are prepared to learn fast
--They consistently show good judgment
--They are professional in their actions toward and treatment of others
--They are focused on student achievement for all students
--They are advocates for their school's success
--They are good listeners
--They are excellent collaborative workers
--They understand the importance of hearing all voices

Additionally, it is important that parent representatives are willing to work to represent the ideas, perspectives, concerns, and opinions of all parents in the school community.

If you are interested in being a candidate for the LSRT please write a brief bio about yourself, and email the bio to Scott Cheney (scottlcheney@gmail.com) and Jonathan McHugh (jmchugh40@mac.com) by June 4th.  The bio statement could include the following information:

·  Grade levels of current students at Janney
·  Goals as a member of the LSRT
·  Past experiences that align with the described characteristics (see above) of LSRT members
·  Experiences working with a diverse group toward a common goal

Candidate bios will be included in the June 8th Take Home Tuesday and posted on the Janney website.

Recess Update and Request for Materials

As we wrap up the second week of our new recess, more and more students are generating ideas for new and different games and activities, especially for the Construction and Imaginative Play areas. While many of these suggestions require equipment and supplies we have readily available already, some require additional materials.  This is an opportunity to talk with your student about the areas they have been choosing to play at, what ideas they have for new or different games, and any materials you might have around the house to donate.  Some of the materials that have already been identified include:

Twine
Fabric
Yarn
Knitting needles
Old costumes and clothes
Cotton rope

If you have any of these materials, or others your student suggest, lying around the house and you'd like to do some Spring cleaning, please bring them to Ms. Sell's office between 8:00 - 8:40 or 3:00 - 3:30 next week. Thank you.
