Principal's Letter Admittedly, something's always going on at Janney, but the
next several weeks are looking like particularly busy ones. Below you'll find a list of May events
to note on your calendar: Tues, May 4 - 8:15am Principal's Coffee Tues, May 4 - 7:30pm PTA Executive Board Meeting Thurs, May 6 - 9:00am PK/K Mother's Day Tea Thurs, May 6 - 6 - 8pm Chancellor Rhee's Office Hours Fri, May 7 - 9:30 & 10:30am Assembly - Ziva's
Spanish Dance Ensemble Mon, May 10 - 5:00pm DC3 Art Show at the Sumner School Mon, May 10 - 9:50am Assembly - (PK - 3) Coyote Steals Summer Tues, May 11 - 5:45pm SIT Meeting Tues, May 11 - 7:30pm PTA Meeting Fri, May 14 - 6:45pm Musical - Coyote Steals Summer Thurs, May 20 Jump Rope for Heart Thurs, May 20 - 7:00pm Janney Band Concert and Ice Cream Social Fri, May 21 Spring Picnic Sun, May 23 - 3:00pm Notebusters Concert at Deal MS Fri, May 28 - 9:00 - 10:30am Janney Talent Show
Stay tuned for additions to the May calendar, as events are
being added all the time! Another
very important May event is Teacher Appreciation Week. Originally, the National
Education Association lobbied Congress for a National Teacher Appreciation
Day. Congress declared March 7,
1980, as National Teacher Day for that year only. The NEA continued observing the first
Tuesday in March until 1985, when the National PTA established Teacher
Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. In the spirit of the Inclusion model we use here at Janney,
we are calling this Educator Appreciation Week to ensure all members of our
staff are recognized. It was
terrific to see so many flowers being delivered throughout the building this
morning. The staff certainly
appreciates the recognition. Another event taking place this week is the implementation
of the new afternoon pickup plan. Beginning on Monday, all 1st - 5th grade teachers
will escort their classes to the greentop area behind the school for pickup at
3:15. Pre-Kindergarten and
Kindergarten classes will continue to escort their classes to the front of the
school for 3:10 pickup. This way,
families with students in lower and upper grades will be able to pick up their
younger students first and continue to the back of the building to meet up with
their older students. With the physical changes taking place around the campus, we
are working diligently to create a new recess plan. A committee of approximately 15 staff members has been
meeting to help design the new plan. Details will be shared with the full staff on Wednesday morning. The full plan will be included in next
week's newsletter, and families will have a chance to play some of the new
games at the upcoming Spring Picnic. Several "thank you's " are in order this week. First, thanks to those who helped with
last weekend's distribution of plants, and an additional shout out to those who
planted flowers in the new planters at the front entrance. Another thank you goes out to everyone
who has completed the registration process. We are currently at about 40% complete. Please keep the forms coming in! Lastly, we experienced a power outage,
along with much of the neighborhood, for about four hours this morning. Thanks to all staff and students for
making this morning go smoothly, with a special thanks to Ms. Morrison.
Sincerely,

A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
Happy May to everyone. Many thanks to Sam
Corrigan and Kelly Lee who coordinated the Janney Flower Sale. For those
who purchased flowers but haven't picked them up yet, please get in touch with Sam or
Kelly to do so. And thanks to those of you who purchased
extra flowers to donate to Janney. Sam and Kelly
planted them on Saturday and the front entrance to the school looks so much better.
This is our last call for people who might want to be on the Janney PTA
executive board next year. The positions in question are two co-Vice
Presidents, one co-treasurer, and one co-secretary. Please let the
nominating committee (Kate LaGuarda, Angela Johnson, and Stefan Fatsis) know soon if you are interested.
And speaking of the PTA, the next full PTA meeting will be on May 11th
at 7:30 in the multipurpose room. On the agenda will be approval of the
2010-2011 budget, consideration of the slate of PTA officers for next
year, and other fun-filled items.
And lastly, just a reminder that the Spring Picnic
and Raffle are coming up on Friday, May 21st. Raffle tickets will start to go on sale this week -- see the article below for details.
Thanks as always to everyone for all your hard work, commitment to the school, and
support.

Counselor's Corner
10 Who Are 10 The 10 Who Are 10 Competition almost didn't happen this
year because the JW Marriott Corporation could not sponsor because of finances. Chancellor Rhee did not want this valuable
competition to end, so she found backers and finances to allow it to
happen. Janney had
14 entries, who on short notice, came up with proposals with the theme
being, "Let's Move It on Monday", an idea that First Lady Michelle Obama
has been encouraging to combat childhood obesity. The entries for the
in-school competition were: Akari Davidson, Mica House, Rebecca Kades,
Abby Korman, Addie Price, Nate Reistetter, Olivier Retourne, Isabel
Rosenthal, Franny Sewell, Tony Smole, David Vaden, Mikaela Watson,
Taylor Watson, and Nora Zich. Finalists were: Akari Davidson, Isabel
Rosenthall and Nora Zich. The winner for Janney is Akari Davidson. Congratulations to all the participants for coming up with creative
ideas for getting moving on Monday and eating healthy. Akari will now
go on to the city-wide competition. Good luck Akari! Deal Math Placement Test On
May 6th, the Deal Math Placement Test will take place at Janney for our
5th graders. A reminder to all 5th grade parents to make sure that
your child is well-rested, has breakfast and arrives on time to take the
test.
