lycknell photoPrincipal's Letter

Janney Families,

With only two full weeks of school remaining, we have lots to do in a short amount of time, so I will keep this week's letter short!

This week teachers finish up grade-level planning meetings off campus as staff takes time to reflect on the year that's coming to a close while also looking forward to next year.  On Tuesday, the Band travels to Webb Wheatley for a Collaborative performance and Ms. Morgan-Williams and Ms. Pressley's class is taking a trip to the National Gallery of Art.  On Wednesday, four Janney students will be competing in the DC3 Collaborative Spelling Bee being held at Scott Montgomery Elementary.  Those students include 5th graders Sammy Levenson and Miles Mellot and 4th graders Isaac Boris and Alex Nardello.  Please join us at 6pm for a fantastic evening of pizza, spelling and getting to know the families across the Collaborative.

All the best for a wonderful week,

Norah Lycknell

Construction Update:

SIT meets on Tuesday evening to discuss designs and material selections for the interior of the building.  We hope to get a final word on the start date!

Sincerely,
A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

The last PTA meeting will be held tonight, June 8th, at 7:30pm in the multipurpose room.  We will be voting on new PTA officers for next year and doing our final review of the budget.  Please join us.

Also, below are bios for the 7 LSRT candidates for the three open slots for parent representatives.  You will also find copies of the bios and a paper ballot in your Take-Home-Tuesday (bios will also be posted on the website).  Each Janney parent is allowed a vote. Votes may be cast one of two ways:
In person at pick-up on Thursday June 10th, or at drop-off or pick-up on Friday June 11th at the table by the front door (inside or outside, depending on weather).  Paper ballots must be presented in person, or
Via email sent before 5:00 p.m. Friday June 11th to both Scott Cheneyand Jonathan McHugh. Email votes must include your name and the names of the three candidates for whom you are voting.  Including your name allows us to ensure that no one votes twice.

All ballots must be cast by 5:00 p.m. Friday by one of the two methods outlined above.

Thanks, and have a great week!

LSRT Candidate Bios

Seven individuals are candidates for the three open slots for parent representatives on the LSRT.   Thank you to all of them for opting to place their names onto the ballots.  We appreciate their willingness to serve and their commitment to the school.

David Bagnoli

I am a proud parent of 3 Janney children (Elena "B"- 4th Grade, Gabby-2nd Grade, and Sophia- Incoming Pre-K) who represents the Janney community as an active participant on the current School Improvement Team (SIT).  As a practicing architect for over 18 years, I have brought to the SIT a knowledge and expertise in the design and construction of large scale institutional projects and am well suited to investigate the implementation of the teaching ideas represented within the renovated and expanded school plans. On the SIT I co-chaired the Design Sub Committee, which was responsible for gathering, filtering and representing broader SIT and community concerns to the OPEFM team in a clear and concise manner that identified critical concerns and suggestions during the important design phases of the project.  I live in the neighborhood and am readily available to discuss any suggestions for the LSRT that members of the Janney community want to convey.

Alan Burch

As a Janney dad for six years now (Sarah, grade 5, and Adam, grade 1), I'm familiar with Janney's many student activities, renovation work, and recent staff changes. I work as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in D.C., on a wide variety of local federal civil cases and, for each case, I have to learn quickly about the particular government programs and internal agency cultures involved. So I am practiced at working in groups of people with divergent views. I have also coached my son's little league T-ball team and my daughter's soccer team.  I'm an avid runner and biker and booster of Girls on the Run (coached by my wife Andrea Levine).  I believe I can contribute to the LSRT's work on professional development, leadership, the DC Healthy Schools Act, and educational assessment.

Michael Cervino

I have two sons - one graduating and one in 3rd grade. Over the past six years, I have been fortunate to give of my time and talents to the Janney community serving as a Room Parent, PTA volunteer and have been a member of the JED Board for 5 years (the last 2 of which as Board Chair.) During my time as JED Board Chair, we have implemented nutritious snacks, improved enrichment activities, reduced incident rates, and increased enrollment in the program. Most recently, I have been working closely with Principal Lycknell, and PTA and LSRT representatives to create a vision and plan for an enhanced and exciting after school program. Through this process, I have created build good working relationships with our community's leaders and gained a holistic insight into our school's successes and improvement opportunities-including those for JED in the future. I share the belief that our new facility will create amazing opportunities for our children, teachers and staff during the day as well as after school. I would gladly give my time and energy as part of the LSR Team to help improve the educational experience of our kids during the day as I have been working to improve after school care through teamwork with the JED Board, JED Staff, our parents, and others.

Kim Curtis

I am the parent of rising 4th and 2nd graders at Janney and am currently completing my PhD. in Education Policy Studies at the University of Maryland. I have always had a particular interest in the work of the SIT (now LSRT) because of its critical role in directing school policy in important areas such as curriculum, staffing and professional development. This interest is a natural outgrowth of my wider interest in education policy issues. In fact, the overwhelming majority of my professional career has been spent studying and implementing education policy at the national, state and local levels both in the U.S. and abroad. In terms of particularly relevant experience, I was part of a U.S. Dept. of Education-funded research team that spent two years studying local school improvement teams and their plans. Based on this experience, I am not only familiar with the inner workings of bodies such as the LSRT but am also convinced of the important role that they can play in conceiving and directing school policy. As such, I would consider it an honor to serve on our school's LSRT. At Janney, I have served for several years as a room parent in my daughters' classes and have volunteered in capacities both large and small. However, the majority of my volunteer time has been dedicated to serving as a Girl Scout leader for Janney troops in first, second, and third grades. Through these various endeavors, I am in frequent contact with a large number of Janney families from a wide variety of backgrounds. If elected, my goals are twofold: 1) to bring my interest in and experience with educational issues to the LSRT to help facilitate good decision making in a collaborative setting; and 2) to effectively convey the decisions of the LSRT to the wider school community so that as many people as possible can be familiar with the LSRT and its important contribution to life at Janney.

Stefan Fatsis

I'm the parent of a rising third grader, Chloe Fatsis, and a freelance journalist, NPR commentator and author. At Janney, I'm best known as the Scrabble guy, a.k.a., director of the Scrabble Club. I started the club in 2007 when Chloe entered kindergarten, and we've grown in popularity every year. The club now has nearly 30 kids playing Scrabble once a week after school in the library. (Six of them traveled to Orlando this spring to compete in the National School Scrabble Championship, where two Janney alums took third place.) In March I organized and directed the first D.C. School Scrabble Championship, which was held in the multipurpose room and attracted more than 60 players from D.C., Virginia, Baltimore and Philadelphia. I've also expanded Scrabble to Deal and to another D.C. elementary school, J.O. Wilson, and have discussed with DCPS expanding School Scrabble citywide. In addition to Scrabble, I started and coach a Janney all-girls Stoddert soccer team, the Power. Thanks to these activities, I've been able to work with and get to know Ms. Lycknell, teachers, administrators, specialists and members of the PTA and other involved parents. On the LSRT, I'd work to build on the improvements we're enjoying at Janney and in our fabulous community, especially during the crucial construction period.

Kristen Maxson

I have a Masters of Science in Education with a focus on School Psychology. In addition to several years of experience as a preschool teacher, I am the Assistant Director and Inclusion Coordinator at St. Columba's Nursery School. In this role, I work with our director to plan and implement the pieces necessary to run our school - developing policies to guide our practice, planning for our school both long and short-term, dealing with staff issues, and making sure the school is an inviting and warm place for our children, families and staff to grow. My goals on the LSRT would be to use my experience with assessment and research, curriculum, administrative policies, and working cooperatively with diverse populations of students and parents in order to help Ms. Lycknell communicate, define, develop or implement school-wide, grade-level and departmental goals related to curriculum, school atmosphere/spirit, and achievement and growth for both students and staff at Janney. As a member of the St. Columba's Nursery School Community, as well as an AU Park resident and a mother of two Janney students (my son Taylor is a K-G kid and my daughter Ellie will join Janney next year in Kindergarten) I would also hope to be a voice for Janney, helping connect the school more deeply with it's neighboring community through improved communication and outreach.

Marjie Thompson-Longshore

Parent of Louisa (1-Mc) and Barrett (future Janney student) and married to John Thompson (Noteboomer). My primary goal as a member of the LSRT is to support all of the thoughtful and wise work being accomplished at Janney through the teachers and staff. There are several projects on the horizon that are exciting. In particular, I would love to help build up the after-school programming and clubs. This Spring, I was a thinking partner with assistant principal, Linda Sell, and the Janney recess committee working together to create a responsive recess for Janney. As a member of the Janney Healthy Food Committee, I have enjoyed helping in the special lunch events we've hosted throughout the year.  My background includes a masters in education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Post graduate school, I worked with a consulting company in Cambridge, MA that researched and consulted on systems management. In particular, we worked with organizations striving to build effective teams. I have also worked as a kindergarten and a preschool teacher.

LSRT Voting

Each Janney parent is allowed a vote. Votes may be cast one of two ways:
In person at pick-up on Thursday June 10th, or at drop-off or pick-up on Friday June 11th at the table by the front door (inside or outside, depending on weather).  Paper ballots must be presented in person, or
Via email sent before 5:00 p.m. Friday June 11th to both Scott Cheney (scottlcheney@gmail.com <mailto:scottlcheney@gmail.com> ) and Jonathan McHugh (jmchugh40@mac.com <mailto:jmchugh40@mac.com> ). Email votes must include your name and the names of the three candidates for whom you are voting.  Including your name allows us to ensure that no one votes twice.

All ballots must be cast by 5:00 p.m. Friday by one of the two methods outlined above.

JED Open House

Wednesday, June 9th starting at 5:30 the JED Board and staff invite all JED parents to join us in the Janney gym for an end of the year open house. This is a great opportunity for parents thinking about JED to learn about the program. We will also use this time to get feedback from parents on JED - what works well and what we can improve on. We would also like to hear from parents on what JED offerings they would like to see for their children next year. The JED Board and staff recognize the importance of having additional safety, structured program and organizational changes to help us cope with the upcoming construction challenges.  We hope you will join us and share your ideas.  If you're not able to attend but want to learn more about JED or share your thoughts, please contact Glen Sitney or Michael Cervino
