Principal's Letter Dear Janney Families,
I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Memorial Day
weekend. Although we have a shortened school week, or maybe because it is
a shortened week, we have many events taking place. First, grade-level team planning retreats begin on Tuesday with the 5th
grade and continue through next week. While each team is off-campus,
teaching and learning is still taking place in the classroom. Teachers
worked hard to prepare meaningful, relevant lesson plans for their
substitutes. While off-campus, teaching teams will be using very
thoughtfully prepared planning documents and guidelines for reflecting
on this past school year and developing and revising curriculum plans
for next school year. Additionally this week, Ms. Osterman's 5th grade class will be visiting
the Thai embassy on Wednesday, the 5th grade classes will travel to
Valley Mill on Thursday, and all of the 4th grade will be traveling to
the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on the same day. For
those not on a field trip on the 3rd, our lunchroom will host the
Strawberries and Greens event, encouraging students to eat healthy
foods. We will wrap up the week with the Reading Rodeo for the Early
Childhood classes on Friday. A few things beyond the school day are happening this week as well. The
PTA Executive Board Meeting is Tuesday evening, and the Community
Clean-Up Afternoon at Janney is taking place on Saturday afternoon, when
plants on the west side of the building are yours for the taking (if
you do the digging!). Please also see the blurb below regarding the
LSRT. Lastly, congratulations to our Spelling Bee winners: Miles Mellot, Sammy
Levinson, Issac Boris, and Alex Nardello. Please come out and support
them at the DC3 Collaborative Spelling Bee being hosted at Scott
Montgomery Elementary School on June 9 at 6:00pm. It is a wonderful
time to share in the community composed of the nine member schools, and
is a chance to connect with families from across the city.
All the best for a great week,

A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents
Good morning. Just
a couple items this week. First, if you are interested in being a
candidate for the LSRT please write a brief bio about yourself, and
email the bio to Scott Cheney (scottlcheney@gmail.com)
and Jonathan McHugh (jmchugh40@mac.com)
by June 4th. See the article below for details.
Also, next
Tuesday the 8th of June is the final PTA meeting of the year. We'll
be voting on PTA Executive Committee membership for the next school year,
reviewing our final budget report, getting an update on the construction,
and discussing committee chairs for next year. Please join us.
And
finally, there is going to be an impromptu clean-up day on June 5th for the
front of Janney's property. Please join us in the morning if you can.
Thanks
very much, and have a great week.

Help to Mold Janney's Future-Run for the LSRT
Elections will be held on June 10th and 11th to
elect three new parent representatives to the Local School Restructuring Team (LSRT). The LSRT is an elected body
that supports and advises the Principal on matters related to advancing student
achievement and continuing to grow a school community that is focused on high
expectations and high achievement for all students. The LSRT consists of six parent representatives (three
rotate off each year), 1 building representative (WTU) or designee, 5 teachers,
and 1 non-instructional staff member. The LSRT meets monthly, and holds additional meetings as needed. A mandatory summer or fall training
session will be held for all members. The LSRT is seeking candidates who are willing to serve a two-year term;
who represent the diversity of the Janney school community; and who share the
following characteristics: --They
are already knowledgeable about much of what is occurring at school, or they
are prepared to learn fast --They
consistently show good judgment --They
are professional in their actions toward and treatment of others --They
are focused on student achievement for all students --They
are advocates for their school's success --They
are good listeners --They
are excellent collaborative workers --They
understand the importance of hearing all voices Additionally, it is important that parent representatives are willing to
work to represent the ideas, perspectives, concerns, and opinions of all parents in the school community. If you are interested in being a candidate for the LSRT
please write a brief bio about yourself, and email the bio to Scott Cheney ( scottlcheney@gmail.com) and Jonathan
McHugh ( jmchugh40@mac.com) by
June 4th. The bio
statement could include the following information: · Grade
levels of current students at Janney · Goals as
a member of the LSRT · Past
experiences that align with the described characteristics (see above) of LSRT
members · Experiences
working with a diverse group toward a common goal Candidate bios will be included
in the June 8th Take Home Tuesday and posted on the Janney website. |

Construction Update
Things are
rather quiet as far as construction is concerned. Our classrooms that
will undergo construction this summer have received explicit packing
plans, and hazardous materials abatement is scheduled to take place from
June 24th through mid-July. We expect to move our offices to a
demountable during that period, but will provide more information as
soon as we get definitive plans from OPEFM.

News from the Health Suite
Requirement & Importance of Reporting Communicable Diseases
The school setting can be a playground for
germs due to the close contact of students and their vulnerability to
childhood illnesses. In order to prevent the spread of communicable
diseases, it is important that parents notify the school nurse if their child is out sick
and/or has been diagnosed with a communicable disease. There are certain
diseases/conditions which may require exclusion from school until the
child has been cleared by a doctor to return. Submitting a doctor's
note may be required before a child can return to classes.
Parents
play a vital role in the maintenance of a healthy school
environment...we're depending on you!

Related to activities or programs that take place on Janney school
grounds, or for specific Janney-sponsored events or programs; 3) From and for not-for-profit organizations (unless #1 and #2 above are satisfied, and approved by both PTA presidents); and 4) Submitted by an official representative of the organization or program referenced.
Inclusion
